How to Keep a YouTube Podcast Updated With New Episodes (and What “Always On” Means)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep a YouTube podcast current as you publish episodes, connect the show’s RSS feed in YouTube Studio if RSS delivery is available in your region. YouTube can upload selected feed episodes and automatically upload new episodes added later. That creates and maintains an episode catalog; it does not keep a literal live broadcast on air 24/7. For that, use YouTube Live with an encoder or a cloud streaming service.

Choose between an updated podcast and a live stream

These are two different workflows with different results:

What you want Workflow What happens when you add an episode
A browsable podcast catalog Connect the show’s RSS feed to a YouTube podcast New eligible episodes added to the feed can upload automatically.
A broadcast that stays live Start a YouTube Live broadcast through an encoder The encoder sends a live stream; this is separate from RSS episode publishing.

YouTube podcasts are playlists of full-length video episodes. For an audio-first show, RSS delivery lets YouTube create videos using the show’s artwork as a static image. An MP3 file alone cannot be added as a podcast episode in Studio; episodes need to be videos.

If the goal is simply to publish each new podcast episode on YouTube, use RSS. If viewers should tune in to an ongoing live broadcast, use the live workflow instead. You can have both, but one does not substitute for the other.

Connect an RSS feed to your YouTube podcast

RSS delivery is available only in selected countries and regions. Check YouTube’s current eligibility and setup guidance before planning around it: Deliver podcasts using an RSS feed.

  1. Create or choose the podcast in Studio. You can create a podcast or assign podcast features to an existing playlist. Keep the podcast playlist for full-length episodes in listening order; use a separate playlist for Shorts and clips. See Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.
  2. Open the podcast’s RSS settings. For an existing podcast, go to Content > Podcasts > [podcast] > Details > RSS settings. Follow the current Studio prompts if the labels differ in your account.
  3. Verify ownership of the feed. YouTube sends a verification code to the email address associated with the RSS feed. Enter the code to confirm that you control it.
  4. Select the episodes to publish. Choose the feed episodes you want YouTube to upload. Set the podcast’s default visibility—private, unlisted, or public—for new feed episodes.
  5. Wait for uploads and review them. YouTube recommends waiting for selected episodes to finish uploading and reviewing them for copyright or monetization issues before publishing a newly connected feed.
  6. Publish and maintain the feed. Once connected and published, new episodes added to the RSS feed can upload automatically. Eligible subscribers can be notified of new episodes.

For YouTube’s detailed steps for selecting, publishing, and disconnecting feed episodes, see Publish or disconnect episodes from an RSS feed on YouTube.

What happens when you add or change episodes

New episodes

After the feed is connected, a new episode added to it can be uploaded to YouTube automatically, subject to regional availability and the feed and podcast setup. New episodes use the podcast’s default visibility. Check that setting before relying on automatic publishing if you intend episodes to go public.

Back-catalog episodes

If you connect a feed to a podcast that already has episodes on YouTube, select feed episodes after the latest episode already on YouTube to avoid duplicates.

Corrections to audio or episode details

Changing an audio file in the RSS feed does not replace the audio in a video already published on YouTube. To replace it, use Re-upload from RSS feed. YouTube makes a replacement video and sets the previous one to private; its views and comments remain available to you.

If you edit episode details directly in Studio, later edits to those details in the feed are blocked from updating that episode. Decide whether the feed or Studio should be the source of truth before making corrections.

Ordering and distribution

YouTube orders RSS-uploaded episodes in the podcast playlist by the feed’s release date when one is present; otherwise it uses the YouTube publish date. YouTube does not verify the release date. The Videos tab uses YouTube upload date, so a migrated archive may appear differently there than in the podcast playlist.

RSS delivery distributes the podcast on YouTube and YouTube Music only. It does not replace distribution to other podcast platforms. Disconnecting the feed stops new episodes from being uploaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copyright, monetization, and sponsorship checks

Review uploaded episodes before publishing, especially when connecting a feed with existing material. YouTube recommends checking for copyright or monetization issues. If an episode contains branded content, sponsorship, or an endorsement, disclose the branded content and follow YouTube’s policies. RSS automation does not remove the creator’s responsibility to check the content and its disclosures.

If you mean a literal 24/7 live broadcast

A podcast RSS feed publishes episodes; it is not a live input. YouTube’s live workflow uses the Live Control Room and an encoder configured with the stream URL and stream key. You can reuse stream settings and configure auto-start and auto-stop. YouTube’s guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation, nor does it say every creator needs dedicated encoder hardware.

For a production that needs more capable live encoding hardware, YouTube recommends considering a professional-grade hardware encoder. It also recommends testing, previewing, verifying access, and monitoring audio and video quality. Those are live-production considerations, not prerequisites for RSS podcast publishing. See Manage live stream settings and YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.

Option 1: Run the encoder yourself

Configure your encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in Live Control Room, then test the output and monitor it while live. Reusing stream settings can reduce setup work for future broadcasts. Because this is an encoder-based live broadcast, the machine and connection running that encoder need to remain available for the stream to continue. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a 24/7 uptime guarantee.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Option 2: Stream uploaded episodes from the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off while it loops the uploaded video, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

For an audio podcast, this is a way to run uploaded video content as a live stream; it does not publish new RSS episodes into your podcast playlist. To keep the podcast catalog updated, use the RSS workflow above. To try the cloud live-stream option, start your free first day with StreamNeo.

Common problems and fixes

  • RSS settings are missing: RSS delivery is limited to selected countries and regions. Confirm availability for your creator account and region in YouTube’s RSS delivery guidance.
  • The feed will not verify: Check the email address associated with the RSS feed and use the code YouTube sends to verify feed ownership.
  • A new episode did not appear publicly: Check the podcast’s default visibility and the episode’s upload status. New feed episodes use the default visibility, which may be private or unlisted rather than public.
  • An older episode did not notify subscribers: Back-catalog episodes added through RSS do not trigger subscriber notifications.
  • An existing video still has the old audio: Feed edits do not change audio in an already published video. Use Re-upload from RSS feed to create a replacement.
  • The same episode appears twice: When connecting a feed to an existing podcast, select episodes after the latest episode already on YouTube.
  • A live broadcast stops or fails: Check the encoder’s stream URL and stream key, test and preview the output, verify access, and monitor audio and video. YouTube’s cited guidance does not provide a guarantee that a live stream will stay up indefinitely.
