If FFmpeg skips podcast episodes, first check whether it ever opened the missing files. If it did, inspect the concat list, input compatibility and duration metadata before changing YouTube’s live settings. The title alone does not establish a single cause; this sequence separates playlist, timing, stream-selection and ingest problems.
Find where the episode disappears
Run the same FFmpeg command with its normal log output visible; do not suppress it with options such as -loglevel quiet. Look for each expected input being opened, its stream information, and the first warning or timestamp discontinuity.
- No input log entry for an episode: check the playlist actually passed to FFmpeg, the entry’s spelling and path, quoting, file permissions and readability.
- Every input opens, but playback jumps, has gaps or drifts out of sync: investigate stream compatibility and per-file durations and timestamps.
- The local output plays every episode, but the YouTube stream does not: move on to output stream mapping, connection stability and YouTube stream health.
This order follows FFmpeg’s documented list parsing and timestamp behavior. It is a diagnostic sequence, not a claim about the cause on a system whose command, playlist and logs are unknown.
Check the concat playlist entries
With FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, the playlist is an input script, not a media converter. It needs a file directive for each path. Compare the literal entries with the intended episode order and confirm that every referenced file exists and is readable by the process running FFmpeg.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'episode-01.mp3'
file 'episode-02.mp3'
file 'episode-03.mp3'
For automatic format detection, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the exact first line, with no leading space or byte-order mark. Spaces and special characters in paths need the documented escaping or quoting. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for the syntax and path rules.
Do not use -safe 0 as a blanket repair for skipped episodes. It relaxes path acceptance rules; it cannot fix a misspelled path, inaccessible or corrupt media, or bad duration metadata. Inspect the command before changing the safety setting, and use the safest setting that accepts your actual paths.

Compare streams and duration metadata
The concat demuxer expects all files to have the same streams, codecs and time bases. Podcast episodes that differ in codec, stream layout or time base may not be suitable for stream-copy concatenation. Use ffprobe on every episode and compare:
- Number and type of streams
- Audio codec and time base
- Sample rate and channel layout
- Reported duration
Duration is especially important: the concat demuxer places each next file according to the preceding file’s duration. Incorrect metadata can therefore create gaps or other timestamp artifacts. FFmpeg specifically notes that inaccurate duration, including duration affected by a truncated file, can cause problems. If a duration looks suspect, test that episode on its own and compare the reported value with a full decode or another trustworthy measurement.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The concat format supports a per-file duration directive when the correct duration is known. Do not guess: an incorrect override simply moves the timing problem. Consult the concat demuxer documentation for duration and file directives.
Choose stream copy or re-encoding
Use concat demuxer with stream copy when the episode streams are compatible and retaining their encoded audio is appropriate. When codecs or stream layouts differ, normalize the files or use the concat filter with re-encoding. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the concat filter for workflows that require re-encoding and the concat demuxer for file-level concatenation; see the FFmpeg concatenation FAQ.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
To isolate playlist handling from live ingest, create a local diagnostic output and play it through the episode boundaries:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i episodes.ffconcat -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 diagnostic.m4a
This is an illustrative compatibility test, not a tested command for your files or a required YouTube setting. The shown AAC encoding re-encodes audio; -safe 0 is appropriate only if your paths require it. Change those options to fit your actual paths and workflow. Do not update the live command until the diagnostic file contains and plays the complete sequence.

Make output audio selection explicit when needed
If the command has multiple inputs or a filtergraph, confirm which audio stream reaches the output. FFmpeg’s -map option manually selects output streams; without it, FFmpeg applies its automatic stream-selection rules. Check the input and filtergraph stream indexes before adding a mapping, because the correct index depends on the actual command. The FFmpeg stream selection documentation explains mapping.
Check YouTube after the local sequence is correct
Once the local output plays all episodes in order, investigate the outgoing live feed. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its live encoder settings recommend constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe frequency and no more than 4 seconds. For advanced stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
These encoder recommendations help validate the live feed; they do not explain a file omitted by a local concat playlist. YouTube also advises testing with similar audio and motion and monitoring stream health messages. Its streaming tips recommend keeping upload bandwidth headroom of 20% and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. If local playback is complete but the live playback is not, review the mapped audio, network stability and YouTube’s stream-health information.
Use the symptom to choose your next check
| What you observe | Check first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| An episode is absent from FFmpeg’s input log | Actual playlist contents, path, quoting and permissions | Correct the entry or access issue, then rerun with visible logs. |
| FFmpeg opens every file, but playback jumps or timing drifts | Stream compatibility and each file’s duration | Compare probe results; override duration only when its accurate value is known. |
| Files differ in codec, stream layout or time base | Whether stream copy is appropriate | Normalize or re-encode, or use the concat filter. |
| Local output contains every episode, but YouTube playback does not | Output audio mapping, live health, network and encoder settings | Review -map, YouTube stream health, upload headroom and the published encoder recommendations. |
| Only the final episode appears shortened | Its duration and output termination behavior | Inspect the log and output duration. The cited documentation does not establish a universal final-file workaround. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is a broken playlist or incompatible files, repair that first; a cloud service cannot correct bad concat input. If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
