End the current broadcast before it reaches 12 hours, then check YouTube Studio for the replay before starting a new session. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Stopping an overlong stream cannot guarantee that its replay will be saved.
Stop the current stream
- End the encoder session. For an encoder-based broadcast, stop sending content from the encoder. If it is a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions also call for selecting End Stream in Live Control Room. Follow the encoder guidance at YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.
- Check for the replay. In YouTube Studio, open Content > Live and look under Live Replay. YouTube describes this area in its webcam streaming instructions.
- Verify its visibility. Open the replay’s details and check the Visibility setting. You can change archive privacy from the content page; confirm it is set for the audience you intend.
- If it is missing, don’t rely on DVR settings to create it. YouTube’s archive guidance does not document a recovery method for a replay that was not captured after an over-12-hour stream.
Why a 24/7 stream can lose its replay
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours. It warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. The 12-hour mark is not a guaranteed safe duration: YouTube’s wording is conditional even for shorter streams. The page does not state a publication year. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
For a continuous broadcast, the practical approach is to use separate sessions that end before the threshold rather than leave one event running around the clock. After each session ends, verify the archive exists before counting on it as the replay copy.
Plan sessions and keep a backup
End sessions before 12 hours
Schedule a stop and restart before the current session reaches 12 hours. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not guaranteed preservation of a single 24/7 event. Leave time to end the session and confirm the replay before starting the next one.

Record a local copy
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. For a long broadcast, check that local recording is active and that its destination has enough free space. A local recording protects against loss of the YouTube replay; it does not make YouTube create an archive.
Understand what DVR does
DVR lets viewers pause or rewind while a stream is live; it is separate from the post-stream archive. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams over 12 hours. If DVR is off, viewers can still see a recording of the full stream once one is available. Changing DVR is not a documented way to recover a missing archive. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube channel, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It can stream the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos to YouTube, not live camera broadcasts, and it does not remove YouTube’s archive-duration caveat: split sessions and keep a separate recording when preserving a replay matters.
