First confirm your channel can go live, then choose settings the computer and upload connection can sustain, test the actual setup, and monitor it. If the complete 24-hour broadcast must be preserved, record it locally: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its automatic archive.
Before you start: confirm your channel can stream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day you plan to start. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live-streaming tips.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and start the live-stream setup process.
- If YouTube asks you to enable live streaming, complete the verification and activation steps, then allow for the possible wait.
- Check that the channel has no current live-streaming restriction that would prevent the broadcast.
How to set up the spare PC for a 24/7 YouTube stream
1. Choose an encoder
An encoder application sends the PC-produced video and audio feed to YouTube. YouTube identifies OBS among its verified encoder options; it also notes that expensive equipment is not required to begin. The right resolution, frame rate, and codec depend on what your particular PC can encode reliably, so there is no universal minimum spare-PC specification.
2. Create a stream and keep its key private
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to run.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s streaming settings. Use the RTMPS option where the encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream. YouTube supports reusable custom keys and provides controls to reset a compromised key. See Manage live stream settings.
3. Pick output settings the PC and connection can handle
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Select a codec supported by both your encoder and source. These platform options do not establish how well an unspecified spare PC will encode them.

The bitrate recommendations are YouTube’s platform guidance, not a guarantee that your PC or internet connection will remain stable. Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for other resolution and frame-rate combinations. The 20% margin is YouTube’s recommendation; leave additional capacity if other devices or services use the same connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
4. Test before making the stream public
- Set up the encoder with the chosen stream URL, key, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval.
- Run a private or unlisted test, if appropriate, using content with motion and audio similar to what you plan to broadcast.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, picture, and sound. YouTube advises setting up well in advance and checking access from channel or watch pages and mobile devices.
- Adjust settings and repeat the test if the image stutters, the stream health degrades, or audio is missing or distorted.
Keep the actual computer, encoder, power supply, and network under observation during operation. Continuous streaming depends on all of them; YouTube’s published settings do not guarantee that an arbitrary spare PC or one encoder session will stay live indefinitely.

Can you leave OBS running all day?
An encoder such as OBS can send the feed while it is running, but leaving it open does not make the whole setup immune to a PC restart, power loss, encoder problem, or internet interruption. Test the exact configuration and keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains supported output settings, but does not specify a universal spare-PC requirement or promise indefinite uptime.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour live stream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve a continuous 24-hour program. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If keeping the complete broadcast matters, enable a local recording in the encoder and confirm that the PC has enough storage for the chosen recording settings and retention period. YouTube recommends a local archive as backup; it does not establish one storage-capacity figure for every setup. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start the stream: Check channel verification, live-stream eligibility, and whether first-time activation has finished. It can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no video: Recheck that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key for the selected stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder.
- The stream is unstable or drops frames: Lower the bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again. Ensure reliable upload bandwidth with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; the published bitrate table is not a stability guarantee for your connection.
- The picture or audio is missing or poor: Confirm that the encoder and source support the selected codec and audio format, and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health during a test.
- The complete stream is missing from the archive: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording when full retention is important.
