To have OBS retry a YouTube connection after a disconnect, open Settings → Output and enable Automatically Reconnect. Review Retry Delay and Maximum Retries in the OBS version you have installed. In YouTube Studio, check the stream’s Auto-stop setting: YouTube says that when Auto-stop is enabled, you can stop streaming from your encoder. Turning it off may leave the broadcast available for a reconnection attempt, but neither OBS nor YouTube guarantees that every interruption will restore the same broadcast.
What automatic reconnect can—and cannot—do
Automatic reconnect is an encoder-side retry: OBS attempts to reconnect to YouTube after its sending connection drops. It does not fix an internet connection that remains unstable, restart an OBS process or computer that has crashed, or guarantee that YouTube will keep the same broadcast open long enough for the retry.
YouTube’s cited help pages do not specify a universal reconnect grace period. There is no dependable number of seconds to promise for how long a broadcast remains recoverable after the encoder stops sending. Test your particular setup and confirm the result at both ends: in OBS and in YouTube Studio or the viewer player.
Set OBS to retry its connection
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, create or select the encoder stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential the encoder uses to send the feed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live stream settings.
- Open OBS settings. Select Settings → Output and enable Automatically Reconnect. OBS’s current interface strings also show Retry Delay and Maximum Retries; review those controls in the version installed on your computer. Labels, placement and defaults can vary by version. OBS documents the settings and reconnect-attempt status messages in its project documentation and source.
- Choose retry behavior for your situation. A longer delay means OBS waits longer between attempts; a retry limit means it may stop trying after that many attempts. There is no universally best delay or retry count in the cited guidance. Choose settings with your expected interruptions in mind, then test instead of assuming OBS will retry indefinitely.
- Check YouTube’s Auto-stop setting. In the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio, avoid configuring Auto-stop to end the broadcast if you want the opportunity to reconnect after the encoder stops sending. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” Disabling Auto-stop is not itself an automatic-recovery guarantee.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Start the encoder, confirm YouTube shows a preview and healthy incoming feed, then interrupt the connection deliberately and restore it. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and checking the preview before going live; its live streaming tips also describe testing a backup by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable.
- Verify the recovery in YouTube. Check the Live Control Room and viewer player after the interruption. An OBS reconnect indicator only shows the encoder’s side of the attempt; confirm YouTube is receiving video and that the broadcast is still live.
- Keep a local recording for important events. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive backup, and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Treat the archive as a convenience, not as your only recording.
Choose between OBS retry and encoder failover
| Approach | What it provides | What it depends on | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS automatic reconnect | OBS retries its connection to YouTube using the configured delay and retry limit. | The same computer, OBS process and network path must become usable again. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance associates intermittent disconnections and dropped frames with network or bitrate stability problems. | Interrupt the connection in a controlled test; confirm OBS retries and YouTube receives the feed again. |
| Backup encoder failover | A separate encoder path can provide a second sender route if the primary fails. | A secondary encoder and a tested setup, with compatible source and stream settings. | YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking that the player rolls over to the backup. Confirm the source, stream settings and local recording behavior in your own test. |
Failover is not the same as automatic reconnect: it needs a second sender path, while OBS reconnect asks the original encoder to resume. Neither option can be assumed to work just because it is configured.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Troubleshoot a reconnect that does not restore the stream
- OBS does not retry: Reopen Settings → Output and confirm Automatically Reconnect is enabled. Check the installed OBS version’s retry controls and status messages.
- OBS retries, but YouTube stays offline: Check the Live Control Room for the actual stream state and feed health. Confirm the selected stream URL and stream key are correct; YouTube advises checking the key in Live Control Room if an encoder cannot start or reports an error.
- The connection keeps dropping or frames are lost: Retry settings cannot repair a persistently unstable network path or bitrate. Investigate the connection between the computer and YouTube’s ingest server, and test whether the stream is stable before increasing reliance on unattended operation. See OBS connection troubleshooting.
- The broadcast ends during the interruption: Review Auto-stop and test again. YouTube does not publish a universal grace period in the cited guidance, so a temporary sender outage may not always resume the same broadcast.
- The encoder cannot start at all: Verify the stream key in the Live Control Room and check whether the encoder needs an update, as YouTube advises in its live streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- You need a recovery route if the computer or encoder fails: OBS reconnect depends on that same setup returning to operation. Consider a separately configured backup encoder and test primary-to-backup rollover before relying on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to keep playing around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an OBS reconnect setting: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without leaving a computer or home connection on, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Videos stream as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot.
The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streaming, not live camera input. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
