Why Is There a Delay Between Podcast Episodes on My YouTube Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A pause between podcast episodes can come from a gap in the stream feed or the handoff between episodes. It can also be a playback issue: buffering, live-stream latency, or a viewer who is behind the live point after pausing or rewinding. The title alone cannot identify which cause applies, so first check whether the gap appears for one viewer or in the stream itself.

First, identify what kind of delay you are seeing

Ask whether the pause occurs at the same episode boundary for multiple viewers, or only in one viewer’s playback. Also note whether the picture or audio stops, how long the gap lasts, and whether the stream is one continuous live broadcast or a playlist of uploaded episodes. Those details help distinguish a feed or episode-handoff problem from player buffering or a viewer who has fallen behind.

  • Several viewers see the same blank or silent break: Check the episode transition, source timeline, and encoder stream health.
  • One viewer buffers or falls behind while the stream continues: Check playback state, network conditions, and the stream’s latency setting.
  • The delay began after pausing or rewinding: The viewer may be watching from the paused point rather than the live edge.
  • The pause is about two seconds at a transition: A YouTube Live Redirect to a Premiere or another live stream may account for the reload.

Why a gap can happen between episodes

The stream feed or episode handoff has a gap

If multiple viewers hear or see the same break at the same boundary, investigate the program feed rather than assuming it is ordinary live latency. Check whether the source timeline contains a gap and whether the encoder reports errors. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the local archive, CPU load, and outbound internet connection. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide covers these creator-side checks.

One documented technical possibility applies only to streams using DASH ingestion: YouTube says a failed media-segment PUT corresponds to a gap in the video stream, and its guidance recommends retrying failed requests and signaling repeated failures to the encoder operator. That does not establish that your stream uses DASH or that a failed upload caused your pause. See YouTube’s DASH ingestion guidance.

The player is buffering

YouTube defines live-stream latency as the time between an encoder or camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. A player buffers when it cannot maintain smooth playback from the incoming stream; network congestion and other factors can contribute. YouTube puts the trade-off plainly: “The lower the latency, the less read-ahead buffer the video player will have.” Less buffer can make playback less stable, so lowering latency is not a universal fix for pauses.

The viewer paused or rewound the live stream

When DVR is available, pausing a live stream and resuming it keeps playback at the paused point. The viewer can therefore be behind the live point even if the broadcast is healthy. Use the player’s return-to-live or live-edge control, if available, to catch up. YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and some devices or older app versions may have lower limits. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream DVR guidance.

A Live Redirect is reloading

If the creator set up Live Redirect from one stream to a Premiere or another live stream, YouTube advises viewers to wait about two seconds for the screen to reload. This is a specific handoff behavior, not an explanation for a longer or recurring episode gap. See YouTube’s Live Redirect guidance.

What latency settings can—and cannot—change

YouTube describes normal latency as suitable for non-interactive streams and as the option with the lowest viewer buffering. Low latency is intended for limited audience interaction, while ultra-low latency is intended for highly interactive streams and carries increased buffering risk. YouTube says most viewers experience less than 10 seconds of latency with low latency and less than five seconds with ultra-low latency; these are typical figures from YouTube Help, not guarantees for a particular stream.

These settings affect how quickly the live feed reaches viewers and how much read-ahead buffer the player has. They do not, by themselves, repair a gap already present in the episode source or an encoder handoff. Choose based on the stream’s need for interaction versus stable playback, then check whether the symptom changes. See YouTube’s explanation of live-stream latency.

If you create the stream, check the source and encoder

  1. Compare the local program with the live output. Review the local archive around the episode boundary. If the archive also has the gap, inspect the source timeline or playlist transition; if only the live output does, check encoder and connection health.
  2. Check encoder warnings and stream health. Look for errors or dropped/failed output around the time of the pause. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, and outbound internet connection.
  3. Check the handoff method. Confirm whether this is one continuous broadcast, a playlist transition, or a Live Redirect. The approximately two-second reload guidance applies only to the redirect case.
  4. Check ingestion protocol before changing it. YouTube says HLS is intended for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, and HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than continuously. YouTube specifies HLS segment durations of one to four seconds. Do not switch protocols without confirming encoder support and stream requirements. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.
  5. Re-test with another viewer and record the result. Note whether the pause repeats at the same boundary, whether audio and video both stop, how long it lasts, and whether the other viewer sees it too.

If you are watching, try these checks

  • Use the player’s live-edge control if you paused or rewound and want to catch up.
  • If only your playback buffers, check your connection and try again; a creator’s low-latency setting may provide less buffering headroom.
  • If the stream transitions through a Live Redirect, allow about two seconds for the screen to reload.
  • If the same pause recurs for several viewers at the same episode boundary, report the boundary and approximate duration to the creator.
