Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To make a YouTube live stream recover automatically, enable automatic reconnect in your encoder. In OBS Studio, turn on Automatically Reconnect and configure its retry delay and maximum retries. This makes OBS retry its connection; it does not guarantee that YouTube’s viewer-facing broadcast will recover from every interruption.
YouTube’s Auto-start & auto-stop controls are different: they let an encoder start or stop a stream. YouTube does not describe them as automatic reconnection or a guarantee of recovery after a network drop. YouTube’s stream settings and OBS’s connection guidance explain the separate roles.
How do I set OBS to reconnect after a dropped stream?
- Open OBS settings. In OBS Studio, open Settings, then Advanced, and find the Network section. Labels and locations can vary between OBS versions.
- Enable automatic reconnect. Turn on Automatically Reconnect, then set a retry delay and maximum number of retries. OBS’s reference says the wait between attempts doubles after each attempt; the retry count limits the attempts, and zero disables reconnecting. It does not prescribe one best delay or count for every broadcast. See the OBS output reference.
- Save the settings and test before relying on them. A retry only helps if OBS can reach YouTube again and the stream event remains usable. Confirm the encoder is still sending and check the YouTube preview and stream health.
Keep your YouTube stream key private. It identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it; anyone with access to the key may be able to send a stream to your channel. Check the selected key and server URL in the encoder if it cannot reconnect. YouTube explains stream keys in its encoder settings guide.
Does YouTube automatically reconnect a live stream?
Do not treat YouTube’s Auto-start & auto-stop switch as a reconnect setting. It allows encoder-controlled start and stop; the cited YouTube help page does not say that it retries a lost encoder connection or guarantees the broadcast resumes for viewers. Recovery behavior depends on the encoder retrying successfully and YouTube accepting the stream again.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a more resilient high-stakes event, a separately configured backup encoder can take over if the primary fails. That is different from asking the same encoder to retry its connection. YouTube advises testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verifying that the player rolls over to the backup. A backup is a preparation option, not a requirement for every casual stream. Follow YouTube’s live streaming tips when setting up a test.
Why does my YouTube stream keep disconnecting?
Automatic reconnect cannot fix a cause that is still present. OBS identifies unstable connectivity, bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain, Wi-Fi instability, faulty network equipment or cables, outdated network drivers, security software, and VPN software as possible causes. Its connection troubleshooting guide recommends a wired connection when streaming.

Reduce bitrate to fit stable upload capacity
OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate that the connection cannot sustain. Lower the encoder bitrate until it fits the upload capacity you can maintain, not just a brief peak in a speed test. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point; treat that as OBS guidance, not a guarantee, because network conditions vary. YouTube likewise advises choosing stream quality for the available connection, testing before going live, and watching stream health.
If you need exact encoder settings, use YouTube’s current encoder settings table. Its bitrate recommendations are specific to codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not apply a value for one combination to another.

Check the local network and software
- Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. Inspect the cable and, where practical, bypass or check the router, modem, switch, extender, and network adapter.
- Check for network driver updates and temporarily investigate whether security software, a VPN, or bundled network-optimization software is interfering with the connection.
- If the problem persists after local checks, contact your internet provider. Congestion on the route or provider-side changes may be outside your control.
What should I check while recovering a live event?
- Check that OBS is running and attempting to reconnect, and that it is configured with the correct YouTube stream key and server URL.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the preview and stream health. Confirm that viewers can access the event after the encoder reconnects.
- For a planned broadcast, test the full setup in advance. YouTube recommends starting encoders ahead of the scheduled event, checking the preview and event accessibility, monitoring audio and video quality, and confirming that a local archive file is growing.
- If the event matters enough to warrant backup encoding, test failover before the broadcast: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and verify that the player changes to the backup.
There is no universal recovery window or outcome established for every YouTube stream. A configured retry is an attempt, so verify the viewer-facing event rather than assuming the encoder’s reconnect message means the broadcast is healthy.
