How to Fix Audio and Video Out of Sync on a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify whether the mismatch is a steady offset, drift that grows over time, dropped frames, or buffering affecting only some viewers. Then correct the specific source or delivery problem and verify the result in YouTube playback—not just in OBS preview. A fixed offset can be adjusted; changing offsets will not fix clock drift or a viewer’s unstable connection.

Diagnose what kind of sync problem you have

Use a visible action paired with a sharp sound, such as a hand clap. Compare several moments, including near the start and after the usual time the problem appears. If possible, compare an OBS recording with the delivered YouTube playback.

What you observe Likely area to investigate
The same sound-picture gap is present from the start and stays about the same A stable source-level offset: one audio or video source is early.
The gap gets larger as the stream runs Device timing, separate capture devices, or buffering; a fixed offset will not remove changing drift.
Audio or video stutters, or OBS reports dropped frames Capture smoothness or stream connection and bitrate capacity, rather than a simple sync offset.
Only some viewers report a problem Compare playback on other devices and networks before changing the source timing.

This comparison is a practical diagnostic, not a universal test protocol prescribed by YouTube or OBS. The distinction matters because an OBS preview can look correct while a delivery or playback issue appears downstream.

Correct a stable source offset in OBS

Change only the source that is early, and measure the correction with the same clap or other visible-and-audible event. Avoid applying a blanket adjustment to every source: a microphone, camera audio, media file, and capture device can each have different timing.

Sound arrives before the matching picture

Delay the early audio source by the measured amount. The official OBS pages cited here do not specify a universal menu path for audio sync offsets, and the right control can depend on how that source is added. Adjust the affected source’s sync offset in its source or audio settings, then repeat the test.

Picture arrives before the matching sound

Use the Render Delay filter on the relevant video source. OBS documents this filter as delaying source-image rendering and notes its use for syncing a webcam image to microphone audio. Add it to the source that is early, set a measured delay, and retest. See the OBS Render Delay Filter guide.

Investigate drift that grows over time

If the gap changes as a 24/7 stream runs, do not keep increasing a fixed offset: it can align one moment while making another worse. Check whether audio and video come from separate devices, whether the problem also appears in a local recording, and whether a capture device is buffering or stuttering.

Test device timestamps for audio capture

OBS documents a Windows-only Use Device Timestamps option for audio input and output capture. It attempts to use device timing to prevent desynchronization and is Off by default in the cited guide. Test it with the affected device rather than enabling or disabling it blindly; run a sustained check to see whether drift changes. The option is not documented there as a universal fix. Details: OBS Audio Sources.

Test capture-device buffering one change at a time

OBS capture sources expose buffering controls. The documentation says disabling buffering may help when a device is delayed, while enabling it may help when playback stutters; behavior varies by source type and operating system. Change one setting, then check both sync and smoothness. Less buffering can reduce delay but may expose stutter on a device that needs it. See OBS Video Capture Sources.

Separate dropped frames and YouTube playback buffering from lip-sync

Check OBS’s dropped-frame counters and YouTube’s stream-health warnings before changing source offsets. OBS associates dropped frames with connection stability or bitrate capacity and recommends diagnosing the connection. YouTube also explains that congestion and playback buffering can affect delivery. Follow OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting when dropped frames point to a connection problem; check YouTube’s Live stream configuration health messages for configuration warnings.

YouTube latency is the delay between capture and viewer playback; it is not the same as a source-level sound-picture offset. Lower latency means less read-ahead buffer and can make buffering more likely. YouTube positions normal latency for non-interactive streams and says it provides the highest quality setting in terms of lower viewer buffering. Webcam and mobile streams do not offer latency choices in the same way. Changing latency can affect end-to-end delay and robustness, but it is not a direct cure when the same audio track consistently leads its matching video. See YouTube’s guidance on live streaming latency.

If one viewer has trouble while playback looks aligned for others, check that viewer’s network and player before altering the source. This is a useful diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that the source is faultless.

Verify the correction on a sustained YouTube test

  1. Use a private or unlisted test if your channel setup permits. Avoid testing a changed configuration on a public 24/7 broadcast when a private check is practical.
  2. Match the real stream. Include the same camera, microphone, capture card, media, frame rate, and scene composition used in production.
  3. Compare multiple points in time. Check OBS preview or a local recording and the delivered YouTube playback, especially after the usual drift-onset period.
  4. Monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health. OBS also recommends testing settings before going live. Extend the test long enough to observe the original failure mode; that duration is practical advice, not a published platform requirement. Guidance: YouTube encoder settings and testing and the OBS Quick Start Guide.
  5. Keep a short change log. Record the observed gap, the source or setting changed, how long you tested, and whether YouTube playback stayed aligned. Do not change offset, latency, buffering, and bitrate simultaneously; that obscures which change helped.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the 24/7 stream is made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded videos—not a camera feed—and plays them as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day.
