For a typical stereo podcast stream on YouTube Live, set FFmpeg to encode AAC at 128 Kbps: -c:a aac -b:a 128k. YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 44.1 kHz; this setting is a recommendation, not a guarantee of sound quality or an uninterrupted broadcast.
Set stereo podcast audio to AAC at 128 Kbps
Add the options to the output options for the YouTube stream:
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
Here, -c:a aac selects FFmpeg’s native AAC audio encoder, while -b:a 128k sets the audio bitrate. FFmpeg documents that the native AAC encoder’s bitrate option takes bits per second and automatically activates constant bitrate (CBR) mode. YouTube recommends CBR for live encoding. See FFmpeg’s AAC encoder documentation and YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Place these among the options for the output they should affect. If one FFmpeg command writes multiple outputs, put the options with the intended YouTube output rather than assuming they apply to every output.

Match the settings to the channel layout
| Audio layout | YouTube recommendation | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo | AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps; 44.1 kHz | Use this row for an ordinary stereo podcast. |
| 5.1 surround | 384 Kbps; 48 kHz | YouTube says 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. |
These are YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026; they are not independent listening tests or promises of a particular sound quality. Do not use the 5.1 bitrate for a stereo stream simply because it is higher. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as live protocols and recommends RTMPS for encryption to its servers.
Make sure FFmpeg is encoding the intended audio stream
The :a stream specifier in -b:a selects audio streams. With multiple audio tracks, that can apply the bitrate setting to all of them. Map the track you want deliberately, or use a more specific stream specifier when only one track should be encoded. FFmpeg’s stream specifier documentation explains how audio stream selection works.

A bitrate option cannot create audio if the input has no audio stream. In that case, provide an audio source or a filter graph that generates one. At startup, check FFmpeg’s output log to verify the selected encoder, sample rate, channel layout, and applied options; the output should show the track you intended to send.
Test the stream before relying on a long run
- Use representative material. Run a test with speech and, if the podcast uses it, music similar to what you plan to stream. YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement representative of the intended event.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. While the test is live, monitor stream-health messages and review any warnings. YouTube recommends monitoring health during the event; its LiveStream health-status guidance describes diagnostics including bitrate, codec, sample rate, and mismatches between primary and backup streams.
- Check the whole delivery path. Audio bitrate alone does not fix missing audio, incorrect channel mapping, inadequate upload capacity, an unstable source, or problems with the combined audio-and-video stream.
For a continuous broadcast, a correct bitrate is only one part of the setup. It does not guarantee that the source, connection, or YouTube stream will remain available without interruption.
