Use YouTube Studio’s Audience heatmap to choose candidate time windows, then compare ad revenue and viewer outcomes across equivalent periods. The heatmap shows when your viewers are active across YouTube; it does not show which hours earned the most on your continuous stream. YouTube’s documented Analytics views do not establish an hourly ad-revenue ranking for one 24/7 video, so treat any time-of-day conclusion as a measured hypothesis, not a guaranteed answer.
What “best-performing hours” should mean
Decide what you want to improve before looking for a winning hour. If the aim is earnings, use estimated ad revenue when that metric is available. If you are comparing yield, define the rate and denominator clearly. Keep total revenue, revenue rates, ad delivery, and audience size separate.
- Estimated ad revenue: the ad earnings measure to use when the question is how much ads earned.
- Estimated monetized playbacks: playbacks that included at least one ad. This is not the same as total views.
- Ad impressions: individual ads shown; one playback may involve more than one ad.
- CPM and playback-based CPM: advertiser-cost measures, not the amount the creator receives after YouTube’s share.
- RPM: creator revenue per thousand views that can include revenue sources beyond ads, so it is not an ad-only measure.
A high CPM can coincide with few monetized playbacks and less total ad revenue than a lower CPM with more ads served. If you are choosing when to insert breaks, consider ad revenue per hour alongside watch time or average view duration rather than maximizing ad opportunities alone. These are useful comparison choices, not guarantees about what YouTube will serve.
Find candidate time windows in YouTube Studio
Use the Audience heatmap as a starting point
- Open YouTube Studio and select Analytics > Audience.
- Find When your viewers are on YouTube. The report covers the previous 28 days and shows when your channel’s viewers were online across YouTube.
- Use higher-activity periods to identify candidate windows. Convert the heatmap to a clock and timezone that make sense for your audience, taking geography into account.
The heatmap is useful for planning, not proof of stream-specific ad performance. It is not limited to people watching your continuous live video, and channel audience reports can reflect viewers of different formats. Check live performance for context
Use the live performance reports to understand concurrent viewers, peak viewers, watch time, and other stream measures. Those help explain what the audience was doing, but viewer counts and watch time are not substitutes for ad revenue. YouTube associates stream analytics with video IDs, and processed Analytics data may differ from Live Control Room data. Live reports can be exported as CSV. Compare live content with other live content rather than mixing it with unrelated formats. See See your live stream’s metrics and Content tab analytics tips — Live.
Build a fair comparison across hours
Log the same kinds of periods
Create a record by date and hour in a chosen timezone. Compare the same weekday and local clock window across multiple weeks where possible. There is no YouTube-prescribed sample size or statistical test for this exercise; more repeated, comparable observations make a pattern easier to distinguish from a one-off fluctuation.

For each window, record the measures Studio actually provides, plus the conditions that could change results:
- Estimated ad revenue, if available; keep it distinct from revenue rates.
- Monetized playbacks or ad impressions, if available.
- Concurrent viewers, watch time, and average view duration or another consistent viewer-experience measure.
- Whether monetization was enabled, the automatic mid-roll frequency setting, and any manual ad insertions.
- Audience geography where materially different, and unusual events such as an outage, a content change, or a major change in audience mix.
Keep stream format, content type, ad settings, and time window as consistent as practical. Season, day of week, geography, ad formats, targeting, recent ad exposure, Premium status, and ad availability can all affect ad metrics. If those conditions differ, note the difference rather than attributing the whole change to the clock hour.

Use Advanced Mode without overstating its precision
YouTube Advanced Mode supports custom reports, comparisons, metrics, filters, and exports. Its documented chart date views are daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly; the public help material does not establish an hourly estimated-ad-revenue breakdown within a single continuous 24/7 video. A stream that remains one video ID may therefore not yield the hour-by-hour earnings leaderboard creators are looking for. Use daily comparisons or the Audience activity pattern unless you have independently validated a separate hourly data source. Do not present that source as exact unless you can verify what it measures and how it maps to the stream. See Learn how to use Advanced mode for analytics reports.
Report availability also depends on the view: YouTube’s live monetization guidance describes a Live-filtered revenue breakdown, while its live-metrics guidance notes that interaction and revenue reports are unavailable with the Live filter in that report context. Follow the options currently visible in the specific Studio report instead of assuming every metric appears in every Live-filtered view.

Check ad settings and delivery before drawing conclusions
Confirm that monetization is enabled for the live stream. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when live monetization is on; mid-rolls can be automatic or manual. A scheduled or inserted opportunity does not mean every viewer receives an ad. YouTube’s systems decide whether a slot gets an ad based on multiple factors, balancing viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. See Monetize your live stream.
Automatic mid-roll settings offer low, medium, and high frequency, and creators can insert breaks manually. YouTube says automatic mode can snooze mid-rolls during high engagement and pause them for some member interactions. Evaluate any change against both ad outcomes and viewing outcomes; more breaks do not automatically mean more revenue.

YouTube Help reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour. That is an aggregate comparison between channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled and those without, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. It is not a causal guarantee or a forecast for an individual 24/7 stream.
Allow for reporting delays and later adjustments
Revenue data can take two days to appear in Analytics, and estimated revenue may be adjusted later, including after a week and in the middle of the following month. Compare periods at a consistent stage of reporting, and label estimates as estimates rather than treating early figures as final. See Check your YouTube revenue.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling the busiest heatmap block the highest-earning hour: use it only to select a candidate; verify revenue separately.
- Using CPM as creator earnings: CPM is an advertiser-cost metric. Use estimated ad revenue for earnings and report CPM only as context.
- Treating views or concurrent viewers as monetized playbacks: track ad-specific measures separately when available.
- Comparing unlike periods: align weekdays, local times, content format, ad settings, audience geography, and season as closely as possible.
- Assuming a manual break guarantees an ad: YouTube decides whether an ad is served to viewers in an opportunity.
- Calling an early estimate settled revenue: allow for reporting delay and later adjustment, and compare periods consistently.
- Promising that moving breaks into busy hours will raise earnings: test cautiously; neither viewer activity nor an ad opportunity guarantees higher ad delivery or revenue.
