First compare the encoder’s preview or a local recording with the incoming preview in YouTube Studio. If the encoder output is already black, investigate the loop media, active scene, or capture source. If the encoder picture is clear but YouTube’s preview is black, check the connection to YouTube and the live dashboard for a warning—YouTube can replace a live stream with a placeholder image when it detects third-party content.
Find where the picture disappears
A stream can be connected and still send no usable picture. YouTube defines a live stream encoder as “the app, program or tool that you can use to capture and compress your live stream.” The image may be missing at the source, in the encoder’s output, or after the stream reaches YouTube.
- Check the encoder preview. Look at the exact output being sent live, not just a media player or source window.
- Check a local recording, if available. A black recording points toward the media, scene, or capture path. If both the preview and recording show the image, but YouTube Studio’s incoming preview does not, focus on the outbound stream and YouTube dashboard.
- Check YouTube Studio’s live dashboard. Look for an incoming-video status, encoder warning, or copyright notice before restarting the stream.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends inspecting the encoder preview and the video sources routed into it. This comparison is more useful than assuming that a black screen means the stream key is wrong.
If the encoder preview or recording is black
Confirm the loop file and active scene
- Make sure the intended scene is the one currently being sent to YouTube.
- Confirm the loop media or capture source is enabled, visible, and pointed at the intended file, window, display, game, or camera.
- If the loop is a media file, verify that it plays in the encoder itself. A file playing in another application does not prove that the encoder’s source is configured correctly.
Use the troubleshooting path for your source type
OBS has separate guidance for game capture, display capture, macOS screen capture, and streaming or encoding problems. The correct checks depend on the source and operating system. Use the relevant article in the OBS Project knowledge base search for “BLACK SCREEN”; there is no single capture setting that is a reliable fix across all source types and systems.

Check encoder health
Use the current version of your encoder, review its error messages and CPU load, and verify that the correct video source is routed to the stream. If the image is missing in the encoder preview, changing a YouTube stream key is unlikely to repair that local source problem.
If the encoder is clear but YouTube is black
Inspect YouTube Studio and the connection
Check the live dashboard for a warning or status message, then review the encoder’s connection and output errors. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and, if the cause remains unclear, testing the outbound connection. Trying another encoder can help isolate whether the problem is specific to the current encoder.

Check for a copyright interruption
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. It says that “a placeholder image may replace your live stream” when third-party content is identified; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A loop containing music or video can therefore go black even when the encoder is still running.
Review the live dashboard and rights status before repeatedly restarting the encoder. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Refresh the stream key only when the error points there
YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions include creating or updating a stream key when an encoder reports an error starting. A black picture by itself does not establish a stream-key problem. Avoid changing keys as a general first response when the encoder preview or YouTube dashboard points to a missing source or rights warning.
