To loop a local video on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, enable live streaming for your channel, copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input file. The command below encodes a looping MP4 as H.264 video and AAC audio. YouTube’s encoder workflow is the same for India as elsewhere in the sources cited here; use the URL and key shown in your own Live Control Room and test from the computer and network you plan to use.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. For a first-time activation, YouTube says enabling live streaming may take up to 24 hours. [YouTube Help]
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can stay on and connected. The command sends the video from your computer; if the computer or connection stops, FFmpeg cannot continue sending it.
- A local video file with a video track and, for the example command, an audio track.
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the chosen video and audio bitrate.
YouTube’s published encoder guidance does not specify an India-only FFmpeg command, ingest URL, or upload-speed threshold. Account eligibility and connection performance should be checked on your own channel and network.
Enable streaming and get your YouTube stream details
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room and open its stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS URL if YouTube shows both RTMP and RTMPS options; the RTMPS endpoint encrypts the connection to YouTube.
- Keep the key private. Anyone who has it can broadcast to your channel. Do not paste it into public code, screenshots, or messages.
The URL and key are specific to the stream setup. Get them from your own Live Control Room rather than copying an example from another channel. YouTube’s encoder setup and RTMPS instructions cover the general process and connection troubleshooting. [YouTube Help: encoder setup] [YouTube Help: RTMPS]
Run a basic FFmpeg loop
For a local MP4 that already contains audio, this template creates a 720p30-style H.264/AAC stream and loops the input indefinitely. Replace input.mp4 with your file and the quoted RTMPS placeholder with the complete server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_HOST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
In FFmpeg, -stream_loop -1 is an input option that means loop indefinitely, so it belongs before the corresponding -i. -re reads the file at its native rate, which is appropriate for sending prerecorded media as a live-style stream. The command’s 6 Mbps video bitrate is within YouTube’s published H.264 recommendation range for 720p30, and -g 60 gives a nominal two-second GOP at 30 fps. Your connection still needs enough sustained upload capacity for the output. [FFmpeg documentation] [YouTube Help: encoder settings]
What to replace and what to keep
- Replace
input.mp4with the actual path to your file. Keep quotation marks if the path contains spaces. - Replace the final placeholder with the full RTMPS URL and key. Do not include angle brackets or leave the placeholder unchanged.
- Keep
-stream_loop -1before-i; putting it after the input will not apply it to that file as intended. - The example assumes a 30 fps output and an audio track. Adjust output settings to your target and source instead of treating the example as universal.
Choose resolution, bitrate, keyframes, and audio
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and not exceeding four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, and AAC or MP3 audio. H.264/AAC is used in the command for broad compatibility. YouTube recommends automatic resolution detection by default; a custom stream key can be configured for manual resolution. [YouTube Help]

YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube Help’s published recommendations, not a guarantee of stable delivery. Use the row matching your actual output codec, resolution, and frame rate.
| H.264 output | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder table also has distinct recommendations for AV1 and H.265. These H.264 figures should not be copied across to those codecs. If the available upload bandwidth fluctuates near the selected bitrate, use a lower output setting or improve the connection and test again.

Relate GOP length to frame rate
A two-second keyframe interval means the GOP length should correspond to twice the output frame rate. At 30 fps, -g 60 is the example used above; at 60 fps, a two-second interval corresponds to 120 frames. Keep the output frame rate and GOP consistent, and do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum interval.
Audio settings and silent sources
The example sets AAC stereo-style audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, values included in YouTube’s guidance for stereo audio. It assumes the input has an audio stream. If it does not, do not assume the same command will work as intended: add an audio source or configure a silent audio stream, then test that YouTube receives both video and audio. YouTube’s settings guidance allows AAC or MP3; it does not provide an FFmpeg-specific silent-audio command.

Re-encode or copy the source?
The example uses libx264 to encode video to the chosen output settings. This provides control over codec, pixel format, bitrate, and keyframes, but encoding uses computer resources. If the source already matches YouTube’s desired ingest settings, FFmpeg stream copy may reduce CPU use. Copy mode does not change the source codec, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframes, so inspect and verify the file before relying on it. FFmpeg describes copy as stream copy. [FFmpeg documentation]
Test and monitor the broadcast
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and run the command before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
- Use test material with audio and motion similar to the intended stream. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” [YouTube Help]
- Check the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room. An incoming stream can be active while still reporting configuration issues; YouTube’s API exposes states including
active, inactive, ready, anderror, with health information to help diagnose problems. [Google for Developers] - Watch for warnings during the broadcast and correct bitrate, resolution, audio, or connection problems before leaving the stream unattended.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube receives no stream | Wrong server URL, key, or stream selection | Copy the URL and key again from the selected Live Control Room stream; ensure the key belongs to that stream. |
| SSL or connection error with RTMPS | Incorrect RTMPS URL/protocol or an FFmpeg build that does not support RTMPS | Verify the endpoint shown by YouTube, confirm the command uses the RTMPS address, and check that your FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube identifies an incorrect RTMPS URL or protocol as a possible cause of SSL and connection errors. [YouTube Help] |
| Stream health reports warnings or poor quality | Bitrate, keyframe interval, codec, resolution, or network capacity does not match the desired stream | Compare output settings with YouTube’s recommendation for the actual codec and frame rate; test whether the connection can sustain the bitrate. |
| Video plays but audio is missing | The input file has no audio track or audio is not being sent in a supported format | Confirm the source has audio, or add/configure an audio stream and retest. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. |
| Live streaming is unavailable on a newly enabled channel | Activation is still pending | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-stream activation, then check the channel’s Live Control Room again. [YouTube Help] |
Keep the stream running: local FFmpeg or cloud
Running FFmpeg yourself gives you control over encoding and uses hardware and a connection you manage. It also means that machine and network must remain available for the broadcast. For a continuous loop, consider what happens if the computer restarts, the connection drops, or the process exits; the local command alone is not a hosted recovery service.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before looping a video, make sure you have the rights to stream its picture and audio on YouTube. A file being available online or suitable for looping does not establish permission. Check YouTube’s current copyright rules and channel policies for your situation; encoder settings cannot make unauthorized content permissible. Also consider whether a repetitive or reused stream meets the requirements that apply to your channel and any monetization you seek. Review the applicable YouTube policies directly before scheduling a long-running broadcast.
