Add the video and rain recording as two separate Media Sources in the same OBS scene, and turn on Loop for each source. This lets the picture and ambience repeat independently, with the rain level adjustable in the Audio Mixer.
Set up the looping video and rain audio
- Add the video: In your scene, click the + button at the bottom of the Sources dock and choose Media Source. Select the video file, then enable Loop in the source properties. Loop is off by default. OBS Media Sources documentation lists supported video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
- Fit the picture to the canvas: Select the video in the preview and choose Fit to Screen (Ctrl+F on Windows or Cmd+F on macOS). You can also resize or reposition it with the transform handles. If your scene has overlays, arrange the Sources list so the video sits below them. The OBS Sources Guide explains source ordering and transforms.
- Add the rain recording: Click + in the Sources dock again, add another Media Source, choose the local rain audio file, and enable Loop for this source too. The setting is independent of the video source. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among the supported audio formats.
- Set the rain level: Use the rain source’s control in the Audio Mixer to adjust its level. There is no universal correct loudness setting; listen to the output with your video and any other audio present.
- Test the result: Make a short recording or stream test, then listen to the resulting output. A moving meter alone does not confirm that the final captured audio sounds as intended.
Choose separate sources or one combined file
| Setup | Control and trade-off |
|---|---|
| Separate video and rain sources | Loop picture and sound independently, and adjust the rain level separately. This is the better fit when the video and ambience should not be tied to the same playback timing. |
| One pre-combined video file | Simpler to manage as a single source, but picture and sound playback are coupled. This comparison describes the workflow trade-off, not a performance test. |
When to use VLC Video instead
For one video plus one rain file, built-in Media Sources are the straightforward option. If you need a media playlist or broader media support, OBS also offers VLC Video. VLC must be installed, and its bitness must match the OBS build; for 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. VLC Video’s Loop Playlist setting defaults to On. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Prevent and fix common problems
- The video stops: Open the video Media Source properties and confirm Loop is checked; its documented default is Off.
- The rain stops but the video continues: Open the rain Media Source properties and check its own Loop setting.
- The video is cropped or does not fill the canvas: Select it in the preview and use Fit to Screen, or adjust its transform.
- You hear an echo from a device: Check whether the same hardware device is captured both as a source in the scene and globally under Settings > Audio. OBS warns that duplicate capture can cause echo. This warning concerns capturing the same device twice, not adding a rain file as a Media Source. More details are in the OBS Audio Sources documentation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running after you finish the OBS setup, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos on YouTube, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo keeps the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and offers the first day free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month.
