“Why does my 24/7 YouTube stream stop after a few hours?” A few hours alone does not indicate a YouTube time limit. The cause could be the encoder stopping, an unstable or overloaded upload connection, an ingest or format error, or another specific issue. Check the timestamped stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room and compare it with the encoder’s logs and the time its output stopped.
Find out what stopped—and when
At the next cutoff, note the time and inspect the stream-health area in YouTube Live Control Room. Record the exact error and its timestamp before changing settings. YouTube reports stream status and specific error messages; their timing helps distinguish a problem at YouTube’s ingest from an encoder or network interruption.
- The encoder stopped: Check whether its process ended, reported an error, or stopped sending output.
- The encoder kept running: Compare its output and logs with YouTube’s stream status. A live event ending on the watch page and an encoder process stopping are different observations.
- YouTube reported an error: Use the wording of that message to guide the next check. For example, a format error points to different settings than a timeout or connection error.
Keep both timelines—the encoder’s and YouTube’s—before restarting or changing configuration. Otherwise, you may lose the evidence that identifies the failure.
Check the encoder and the computer running it
Update the encoder software, then inspect its error output and CPU load around the time the stream stopped. If you record a local archive, check whether it is intact and whether it continued growing up to the cutoff. These checks can show whether the failure occurred before the video reached YouTube, but do not by themselves prove that a particular encoder or computer is defective.

If the local output appears healthy and the cause remains unclear, YouTube recommends trying another encoder as a diagnostic. Treat that as a way to isolate the source, not as proof that replacing the encoder will fix an unidentified outage.
Measure upload capacity under real conditions
Run an upload speed test while the connection is under conditions similar to the live run. Compare the available upload capacity with the configured stream bitrate, including any primary and backup streams. YouTube recommends keeping the total bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% spare. Other people or devices sharing the network can reduce the capacity available to the stream, and a connection disruption can break it. If the connection tests poorly, YouTube advises contacting your internet provider.

For a failure that happens only after hours, consider whether network use changes over time—for example, another device starting a large upload. Compare the time of any such change with the stream-health and encoder logs rather than assuming the speed test alone rules the network in or out.
Match format and ingest fixes to the actual error
If Live Control Room reports an incorrect stream format, compare the encoder’s video and audio codecs and container with YouTube’s documented requirements. Avoid changing formats speculatively when the dashboard reports a different kind of failure.

For an RTMPS timeout or SSL error, verify the stream URL obtained from Live Control Room, the protocol and port where applicable, and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. Use the specific error to decide what to check; changing the endpoint or codecs without evidence can create a second problem.
Test a continuous setup before relying on it
YouTube recommends testing encoder settings, checking the preview and stream health, and confirming that local archive files are growing. Test with audio and movement resembling the intended broadcast. For a 24/7 setup, run a planned test long enough to see whether the same failure recurs; YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a universal test duration.

Keep a simple record of start time, cutoff time, stream-health messages, encoder errors, CPU load, network conditions, and whether the local recording continued. That makes a repeated failure easier to distinguish from an isolated interruption.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving condition, not a published rule that ends a live stream after a few hours. YouTube separately warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Whether a live event remains active, whether it is archived, and how far viewers can rewind are three distinct issues.

Should you buy a hardware encoder?
Not as the first troubleshooting step. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but also says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. First check the encoder version and logs, computer load, local archive, network capacity, and the exact YouTube error. Consider hardware when your production needs justify it or evidence points to the current encoder as a bottleneck—not as a remedy for an outage whose cause is still unknown.
