YouTube 24/7 Streaming Service vs. OBS on a VPS: Which Should You Choose?

Choose a hosted 24/7 streaming service if you want someone else to handle continuous video playout; choose OBS on a VPS if you want direct control over the encoder and are prepared to configure, monitor, and recover it yourself. Neither option bypasses YouTube’s encoding requirements, rights rules, or replay limits. For a YouTube-only hosted option, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos playing from the cloud; it is #1 to consider for straightforward 24/7 playout because it stays on without a home computer, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a first free day.

What differs between a hosted service and OBS on a VPS?

A hosted service and a VPS can both send a continuous stream to YouTube, but they leave different work in your hands. A hosted service may operate continuous playout for you; check its current terms to see exactly what setup, monitoring, and recovery it includes. With OBS on a VPS, you operate the server and encoder yourself, including setup, monitoring, and recovery.

Decision factor Hosted 24/7 streaming service OBS on a VPS
Setup and operation The provider may manage playout. Confirm what setup and monitoring are included. You configure OBS and the VPS, and plan for restarts, encoder crashes, and source failures.
Control Available sources, overlays, schedules, and stream controls depend on the service. You have direct control over OBS scenes, sources, encoder settings, and automation, limited by the VPS’s compute and graphics capabilities.
Cost Compare the current subscription, content or bandwidth limits, and add-on features. Account for compute suitable for continuous encoding, storage, bandwidth charges or quotas, and your maintenance time. There is no established like-for-like price that shows one approach is generally cheaper.
Reliability and recovery Check uptime commitments, incident history, alerting, and recovery behavior in the provider’s current terms. Review the VPS provider’s terms and set up process supervision, restart and reconnect handling, monitoring, and backups.
YouTube delivery Confirm YouTube support, stream-key handling, output settings, and what happens after a disconnect. Configure YouTube-compatible output and verify the VPS can sustain the selected encoding settings.
Replays YouTube’s archive limits apply regardless of the service. The same YouTube limits apply; a local recording gives you another copy only if you provision and monitor it.

Do not assume a VPS costs less without calculating continuous compute and outbound bandwidth. Likewise, do not assume a hosted service is more reliable without checking its current operating terms and evidence. For either route, test the complete video and audio path, watch stream health, and check what happens after a disconnect and restart.

When does each option make sense?

Choose hosted playout for less server administration

A hosted service is a fit when your main goal is continuous playback and you do not want a personal computer or self-managed VPS to be the point of failure. Verify that its source and playlist features, stream-key workflow, output quality, and recovery behavior match your use. For a YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs in the cloud, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and offers a free first day. It plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-live service.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose OBS on a VPS for encoder control

Use a VPS if you want to build and operate OBS scenes, choose sources and encoder settings, or automate a workflow that a hosted service does not support. The trade-off is ongoing responsibility: you must ensure the server has enough capacity, preserve source files, detect failures, and restore the stream when something stops.

How to run OBS on a VPS for YouTube

The exact menus and available hardware encoding depend on your OBS build and VPS operating system. The YouTube workflow is to configure the encoder for YouTube, provide its stream URL and key, start encoding, then confirm the stream in Live Control Room when prompted. YouTube’s guide recommends testing before the stream and monitoring stream health. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

  1. Prepare the VPS and media. Choose a VPS whose compute and, if needed, graphics capabilities can sustain your intended resolution, frame rate, and codec continuously. Make sure the video and audio files are accessible after reboots; plan storage for them and any local recording.
  2. Install and configure OBS. Create the scene and sources needed for your video and audio. Select YouTube as the streaming service if available; otherwise enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the key private because anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  3. Set output to YouTube’s recommendations. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its supported video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; it recommends CBR, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps and 12 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular VPS can encode or upload reliably. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you plan to use.
  4. Start the encoder and confirm in YouTube. Start streaming from OBS, open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, and follow the prompt to confirm and go live if shown. Check the preview, video, audio, and stream-health indicators before relying on the stream.
  5. Keep it running and recover deliberately. Configure the VPS to start OBS after a reboot and use process supervision or equivalent monitoring to detect a stopped encoder. Test both a server restart and a dropped connection; confirm the source resumes, the encoder reconnects, and YouTube receives the stream. Keep a separate recording if the replay matters.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans or start your free day.

YouTube settings both approaches must respect

Use an appropriate ingest protocol and encoder output

Both a hosted provider and OBS must deliver an output YouTube can ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. The right setting depends on the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec; these recommendations do not establish VPS capacity or guarantee a stable connection. YouTube’s encoder settings page has the current detail.

Protect the stream key

YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. Select YouTube in the encoder when available; otherwise copy the URL and key from the YouTube live workflow into the encoder’s matching fields. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or expose it in scripts or logs. If it is exposed, replace it through YouTube’s live settings and update the encoder or service. See YouTube’s encoder setup steps.

Copyright, originality, and monetization

Confirm rights for every part of the stream

Continuous playback does not change responsibility for the video, music, artwork, or other material in the stream. YouTube’s livestream terms state that the uploader represents and warrants having the necessary rights for worldwide use, including applicable music licensing rights. Review the YouTube livestream terms and obtain the permissions your content requires; this is practical guidance, not legal advice.

Do not treat 24/7 uptime as a monetization strategy

YouTube applies its monetization policies to livestreams. Its July 15, 2025 policy update clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under “inauthentic content” and is ineligible for monetization under the existing policy. A stream format or continuous uptime does not guarantee monetization; review your channel and content against the YouTube channel monetization policies.

Plan around YouTube’s replay and DVR limits

Archives may not capture streams longer than 12 hours

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, keep a separate recording or plan segments that fit the archive window. This applies whether OBS or a hosted service sends the stream. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.

DVR rewind can be limited on very long streams

Rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond the 12-hour window on very long streams, and device or app limits can be lower. Do not promise viewers that they can rewind the entire broadcast. Check YouTube’s DVR guidance for the applicable behavior.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder has the correct YouTube stream URL and current key, that the key has not been replaced, and that the VPS can reach the ingest service. Confirm the encoder is actually running.
  • The video stutters or YouTube reports poor health: Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Check sustained VPS encoding load and outbound connection capacity; lower output settings if the system or connection cannot hold the target reliably.
  • The stream stops after a server restart: Configure OBS to start on boot and add process supervision or monitoring. Test recovery rather than assuming a successful manual launch will restart automatically.
  • The stream reconnects but playback does not resume: Verify the source file or playlist remains available and that the scene still outputs audio and video. Test disconnect and restart behavior end to end.
  • The replay is missing: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube. Keep a separately monitored recording or divide the schedule into segments.
  • A stream is live but not eligible for monetization: Review content originality and the applicable monetization policy; the fact that a broadcast is continuous does not establish eligibility.

Cost and operational checks before you commit

There is no established universal price comparison between hosted services and OBS on a VPS. Compare actual current terms for the specific options you are considering rather than just the VPS headline compute price.

  • For a hosted service: Check the subscription period, included storage, quality limits, bandwidth or content restrictions, monitoring, recovery behavior, and support.
  • For a VPS: Add the cost of compute capable of continuous encoding, storage, outbound bandwidth or quota overages, backups, and the time needed to maintain and troubleshoot it.
  • For either approach: Test the full video and audio path, monitor stream health, and verify behavior after a dropped connection and restart before depending on it.
