You can change a YouTube live stream’s title in YouTube Studio while the stream is running; you do not need to stop the encoder. Open the active stream’s editing controls, change the title, and save. The route varies by how the stream was created, and YouTube does not promise how quickly the new title will appear everywhere.
How to change the title without ending the stream
- Open YouTube Studio. Go to Create → Go live to open the Live Control Room, or find the active broadcast under Content → Live.
- Open the active stream’s details. Select the stream, then choose Edit or its stream details/settings page. The exact controls depend on whether you started it as a webcam stream, with an encoder, or as a scheduled event.
- Change and save the title. For webcam streams, YouTube says settings available through Edit can be changed whether the stream is live or not. For encoder and mobile workflows, YouTube directs creators to edit metadata from the stream settings page.
- Check the watch page. YouTube’s guidance does not specify an exact time for the change to appear on every surface, so check the page rather than assuming the update is instantaneous.
YouTube’s video-title guidance sets a 100-character limit. Keep the new title within that limit.
What changes—and what does not
The title is stream metadata, not an encoder setting
Changing the title in Studio updates the stream’s metadata. You do not need to send a new title through OBS or another encoder, and changing the title alone does not require stopping the broadcast.
A title edit does not protect the replay
Changing a title and saving an archive are separate tasks. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup if the replay matters. Its guidance does not prescribe whether a 24/7 channel should divide programming into shorter sessions, so choose a session structure that suits your channel and recording workflow.

DVR is different from an archive
DVR lets viewers rewind during a live broadcast; it is not the same as a saved replay. YouTube notes that DVR features can be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Do not rely on DVR as a substitute for a local recording.
