Neither a spare PC nor a VPS is automatically the better host for a 24/7 YouTube stream. A spare PC can make sense if its encoder and your home upload connection sustain the real OBS workload; a VPS can make sense if you need the encoder off-site and can verify that a specific instance provides suitable compute, graphics or encoding access, and sustained outbound bandwidth. Test the complete setup before relying on it, and plan how you will monitor and recover it.
What the two setups actually depend on
With a spare PC, OBS uses the computer’s local CPU or GPU, power, network equipment, and home internet connection. With a VPS, OBS runs on a remote virtual machine; performance depends on the instance you select, including its CPU, graphics or encoder capabilities, operating system, and network limits. A VPS is not a guarantee of a hardware encoder or sustained bandwidth.
OBS cautions that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” It also says CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Those are reasons to test your particular stream—not evidence that one hosting option wins. See OBS’s system requirements (page content dated 2021-08-25; requirements may change).
Compare the options against your workload
| Factor | Spare PC | VPS | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Encoding and scenes | Uses the spare computer’s available CPU/GPU and OBS encoder. | Uses the selected instance’s CPU and any graphics or encoder capability actually available to your setup. | Test your scenes, codec, resolution, and frame rate under sustained load. OBS requirements vary with these factors; a compatible system is not necessarily capable of the intended workload. |
| Upload path | Depends on the home internet connection and local network. | Depends on the instance type and provider’s network configuration and limits. | Test sustained upload at your planned stream bitrate. For a VPS, check the exact instance’s bandwidth behavior, including whether any capacity is burst-based. |
| Power and access | Depends on local power and the computer staying on; troubleshooting may require local access. | Runs remotely, but remote availability, access, restart behavior, and recovery depend on the provider and your configuration. | Establish how you will monitor, remotely access, restart, and recover the stream. Verify provider terms rather than assuming remote means uninterrupted. |
| Cost | May reuse hardware, but electricity and any upgrades depend on your situation. | Requires a paid cloud configuration; cost depends on the instance and region. | Compare actual costs for equivalent workload and operating schedule. The sources cited here do not establish a current price comparison. |
| Practical fit | More compelling if the equipment and connection you already have pass a realistic endurance test. | More compelling if off-site operation or remote administration matters and you can select a suitable configuration. | Test the whole workflow, including media or capture sources, audio, credentials, reconnect behavior, and monitoring. |
There is no published head-to-head uptime result here for OBS on a spare PC versus a VPS, and neither OBS nor YouTube promises unattended 24/7 operation. Do not treat a short successful test as proof of long-term reliability.

Set YouTube’s ingest settings before testing
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists supported protocols, codecs, and settings. Its bitrate figures are recommendations, not measurements of what your PC, VPS, or internet connection can sustain. The table below gives YouTube Help’s H.264 recommended bitrates; the accessed page shows no publication year. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings page before configuring a stream.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Configure the output to match the stream you actually intend to run; resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity all affect the workload. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

How to decide and validate either setup
- Write down the workload. Record the input sources, scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, codec, and target bitrate. Include audio and representative movement, not just a static screen.
- Test the spare PC, if considering it. Run OBS with the intended scenes and output settings, then check OBS performance and YouTube stream health. Use a wired connection if practical; an Ethernet cable can reduce reliance on Wi-Fi, but it cannot prevent ISP or power outages.
- Check the upload path. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. AWS IVS separately advises a stable constant connection, a wired network, and 50% more bandwidth than the minimum required. That is AWS IVS guidance—not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee against interruptions. See AWS IVS streaming configuration.
- Inspect a specific VPS configuration. Confirm the operating system, OBS compatibility, CPU, graphics or encoder access, and sustained outbound network capacity. AWS documents that bandwidth allowances vary by EC2 instance type and that some types use burst credits; this illustrates why a generic VPS label or headline “up to” rate is not enough. See EC2 instance network bandwidth and GPU instances for graphics workloads. These AWS pages describe AWS configurations; they do not establish the capabilities of other VPS providers.
- Test the full operating routine. Verify media or capture inputs, audio, stream-key handling, remote access, reconnect and restart steps, and how you will notice a failure. A successful short run checks configuration; it does not establish continuous uptime.
- Compare real operating costs and failure paths. For a PC, account for electricity, any upgrades, local power, and home connectivity. For a VPS, calculate the actual instance cost for your schedule and examine provider support and recovery terms. Neither option’s total cost or reliability can be generalized without those specifics.
Common problems to check
- Encoder overload or dropped frames: The selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene load may exceed the machine’s sustained capability. Test the actual scene and output, then reduce workload or use a configuration that can handle it.
- Unstable connection or poor stream health: Compare the measured, sustained upload path with the planned bitrate; investigate Wi-Fi, local networking, ISP conditions, or VPS bandwidth limits. A nominal bandwidth figure does not prove sustained capacity.
- VPS cannot use the expected encoder: Confirm the exact OS, graphics access, and encoder support before selecting an instance. AWS lists GPU instances for graphics workloads, but availability and suitability are configuration-specific.
- Stream stops and stays stopped: Identify how YouTube disconnects, OBS reconnects, and the host restarts; add monitoring and a recovery procedure. The cited guidance does not guarantee automatic recovery for either setup.

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or custom OBS scene, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is YouTube-only.
