Choose a VPS when remote control is worth the recurring rent and its monthly transfer quota covers your stream with headroom. A managed cloud service is another option if you want to avoid running a computer or administering a server. There is no universally cheapest choice: bitrate, transfer limits, electricity tariff, taxes, and maintenance all change the calculation.
What you are choosing between
A loop stream sends a pre-recorded video or playlist to YouTube continuously. With a spare computer, your machine and home internet send the stream. With a VPS, a rented server in a data centre sends it. A managed cloud looping service handles the hosting workflow for you.
The video bitrate matters in all three cases: it determines the upload capacity needed and, for a VPS, contributes to monthly data transfer. The comparison below is a decision aid, not a benchmark; no computer, provider, route, or stream has been tested for this article.

Calculate the stream’s bandwidth and transfer needs
Choose an encoder bitrate
YouTube’s current guidance recommends these H.264 ingestion settings: 4 Mbps for 720p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees of the final bitrate viewers receive: YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer formats. As a planning estimate, a continuous 6 Mbps stream for a 30-day month sends about 1.94 decimal TB before overhead; 10 Mbps sends about 3.24 decimal TB. These figures are bitrate-times-time calculations, not provider-reported usage. Leave headroom for protocol overhead and check how a provider defines and measures transfer.
Check a VPS quota against the estimate
VPSWala’s catalogue, whose pricing it says was reviewed on 21 August 2026, lists ₹596/month for 200 GB transfer and ₹4,799/month for 1,600 GB. The listed prices exclude GST. The 200 GB example is far below either continuous-stream estimate; even 1,600 GB is below the 6 Mbps estimate before overhead. Inservers advertises a streaming VPS starting at ₹880/month with 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe storage, and a 1 Gbps unmetered uplink. Those are vendor-advertised terms, not independently verified performance. Before relying on “unmetered,” confirm the sustained outbound-stream policy, data-centre location, taxes, and acceptable-use terms with the provider. See Inservers’ India streaming VPS offer.
Estimate the spare computer’s real cost
If the computer is already yours, calculate its marginal electricity cost rather than treating it as free. Measure or estimate its power draw while streaming, multiply by the hours it will run, then apply your local electricity tariff. A suitable machine that is already available may have low incremental cash cost, but buying a computer changes the comparison. Your actual tariff and machine draw are specific to you; there is no reliable nationwide bill to apply here.

Also account for the machine being occupied and for home power, router, and internet interruptions. OBS sends the stream directly from your computer to the streaming destination; unstable or insufficient connectivity can cause dropped frames. OBS recommends judging the connection using its dropped-frames counter and connection indicator. Read OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.
Set up and test the stream path
- Prepare the video and choose a target. Use a compatible pre-encoded file if you want to reduce the work required of the host. Pick the resolution and frame rate you need, then use YouTube’s corresponding recommended H.264 bitrate as a starting point.
- Check the outbound connection. On a spare computer, test the home connection at the intended bitrate. On a VPS, verify the plan’s actual transfer allowance and provider terms, then test the route and sustained upload rather than relying only on an advertised uplink speed.
- Configure the encoder. YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Use the settings YouTube supports for your encoder and intended output. Check the current YouTube encoder settings.
- Prefer secure RTMPS ingestion where supported. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; its guidance requires a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and port 443. Use the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio, and do not expose or share the key. Read Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.
- Run a private or unlisted test before relying on a loop. Check YouTube’s stream health and the encoder’s dropped frames, audio, image quality, and reconnection behavior. If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate or resolve the network problem before leaving it unattended.
Choose based on your priorities
- Try a spare computer first if you already have an adequate machine, can keep it and the home connection running, and find the electricity cost acceptable.
- Choose a VPS if remote access and control matter enough to justify recurring rent, and the plan’s measured transfer allowance covers your bitrate with headroom. A low headline price is not useful if its quota cannot carry a continuous stream.
- Choose managed cloud streaming if avoiding server administration and keeping your own computer off matter more than low-level control. Confirm the service’s current price, storage, quality terms, and recovery behavior before subscribing.
StreamSetu, for example, advertises 24/7 cloud streaming and automatic reconnect. A technically stable loop is not a substitute for rights to the material or compliance with YouTube’s policies. Before streaming music, game footage, or other third-party material, make sure you have the necessary rights and permissions. YouTube may apply copyright enforcement to live content.
