Yes, you can try running an always-on YouTube stream from an older PC, but there is no universal low-end specification that guarantees it will work. Start with a simple OBS scene and H.264 at 720p30, then test the actual computer and internet connection over a long run. If encoding overloads the PC, try 480p30. If you need the stream to continue while your PC is off, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is an alternative.
What matters most on a low-end PC
OBS being compatible with a computer does not prove that the computer can encode and stream your particular scene reliably. The workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, capture sources and scene complexity. OBS itself cautions that meeting the basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording capacity: OBS Studio system requirements.
For an always-on stream, the goal is not the highest setting the PC can briefly manage. It is a configuration that holds up with your intended content, audio and network conditions over time. YouTube likewise advises choosing a quality that produces a reliable stream based on the internet connection: YouTube live encoder settings.
Choose a starting resolution and bitrate
YouTube’s current H.264 guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these bitrate ranges. They are platform ingest recommendations, not independent tests of an older PC’s ability to encode continuously.

In OBS, begin with H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. If the PC cannot hold 720p30, reduce the workload and test 480p30 rather than assuming that a listed bitrate will solve an encoding problem.
Set up OBS and test the real workload
- Confirm live access. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before a planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder live-stream help.
- Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. Then configure a simple scene using the same game or video source, audio and capture method you expect to use during the stream. The wizard is a starting point, not proof of long-term stability.
- Reduce unnecessary work. Keep the scene lean and disable capture sources, filters or animated elements you do not need. Test representative movement and audio; a static menu may be easier to encode than fast gameplay.
- Set the initial video target. Try H.264 at 720p30 with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations as ingest guidance, then adjust based on sustained performance and stream health.
- Test upload where the PC will run. Measure upload capacity at the actual location and time of use. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth spare and notes that other people and devices may share the connection. Download speed alone does not show whether the outbound stream will hold.
- Rehearse privately or unlisted. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health while OBS runs the intended scene. YouTube recommends testing and ongoing monitoring; do not rely on a brief setup check for an unattended broadcast.
- Run a long-duration trial before calling it always-on. Check what happens after an OBS restart, PC restart, internet interruption and power interruption. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal method for automatic recovery from these failures.
Improve connection reliability and plan for interruptions
If Wi-Fi is unstable, test a wired PC-to-router Ethernet connection and repeat the rehearsal. A cable may improve the local link, but it cannot prevent an ISP outage, router failure or power cut. Keep other household upload use in mind and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth margin.

Do not describe the stream as guaranteed 24/7 unless you have tested the exact PC, network and recovery process. Record which configuration held, for how long, and what happened during interruptions. That gives you a practical basis for deciding whether this PC is suitable for an unattended stream.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour live stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not promise an archive for streams longer than 12 hours. If preserving the complete program matters, set up a separate local recording, check available disk space, and verify that the recording file is actively being written before leaving the stream unattended. Keep the broadcast safe to leave running
Before an unattended stream, check that you have the rights to every video, audio track and other material in the broadcast. YouTube’s live access requirements and archiving rules do not establish permission to rebroadcast copyrighted or reused material. Review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies and use content you own or are licensed to stream.
