Keep podcast masters separate from final, stream-ready episodes, give each export a consistent filename, and build an ordered looping playlist in OBS. Before relying on it unattended, play through the full lineup and check every file, transition, and audio level. This is a practical organization system—not an OBS-mandated folder standard.
Set up a folder structure that separates masters from playback files
Use one top-level folder for the show, with subfolders that distinguish source recordings, approved playback exports, schedules, artwork, and administration. For example:

05_Archive/Keep untouched master recordings in 01_Masters; put only finished, approved files intended for the broadcast in 02_StreamReady. This reduces the chance of selecting a rough cut or duplicate by mistake. The folders are an organizational recommendation, not an OBS requirement.
Use filenames that identify each episode
A consistent pattern makes files recognizable in a long playlist. One option is showname_012_episode-title_video.mp4; for an audio-only item, use an audio suffix instead. Include a season or series identifier when it helps distinguish episodes, and use leading zeroes in episode numbers so lists sort as expected.

Keep different schedules in different playlists
Set the playback order in the playlist itself. For chronological programming, number episodes and arrange them in sequence. If you also want a thematic or shuffled schedule, create a separate playlist rather than renaming media files to encode several different orders.
Store rights notes with the episode record
Keep permission and license details in 00_Admin/rights-and-releases or another predictable location, and check the rights for music, sound effects, guest clips, video inserts, and artwork individually. A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for licensed third-party material to avoid being interrupted. Build a looping playlist in OBS
For a local, continuous show, OBS can play local media. Its VLC Video source supports playlists as well as looping and shuffle behavior. The VLC source requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation says a matching 64-bit VLC installation is needed. See the OBS media sources documentation.
- Prepare the playback folder. Put approved final exports in your stream-ready folder, not alongside drafts or untouched masters.
- Create a scene. In OBS, make a scene for the continuous podcast feed.
- Add a playlist source. Add a VLC Video source to that scene and select the episode files you want in the broadcast.
- Set and check the order. Arrange the files in the order listeners should encounter them. Enable looping for a repeating playlist; use shuffle only if randomized programming is intentional.
- Keep file paths stable. Store the library in a consistent location. If you move or rename files, confirm the playlist still points to them.
- Play the whole lineup before launch. Confirm every file loads, the intended audio is audible, transitions work as expected, and the playlist contains no stale or draft export.
OBS also recommends testing that settings work, the stream runs smoothly, and scenes are configured before the first live stream. Follow its pre-stream testing guidance in a controlled session rather than discovering a broken source after viewers arrive.

Choose between running OBS locally and a cloud service
With OBS on a local computer, you keep direct control of the files, but the computer, encoder process, power, and home internet connection remain part of the broadcast path. A hosted encoder is an alternative if you cannot keep that setup running. Compare the operational differences before choosing:

Check the stream after launch and when the setup changes
A local OBS workflow depends on the machine running OBS and its internet connection. Check the stream after launch, and repeat your checks after changes to the computer, source files, playlist, or network. YouTube’s live-streaming API guide describes a 24/7 live feed as a use case and distinguishes a liveBroadcast—what viewers watch—from a liveStream, which transmits audio and video. Most creators can set up a straightforward stream in YouTube Studio and OBS without using the API. See YouTube Data API: Live Streaming.
