First identify which kind of stutter you have: OBS dropped frames usually point to an unstable or insufficient network connection; rendering or encoding overload points to PC resources; and buffering reported by viewers can happen even when OBS is sending frames normally. Check OBS’s stats and connection status before changing settings, then address the matching cause.
Diagnose where the stutter starts
“Lag” can describe different problems, and the fix depends on which one is happening. Ask whether the video looks choppy in OBS or on your own playback, whether OBS’s dropped-frame count is rising, and whether viewers are reporting buffering. A viewer’s buffering is not proof that OBS is dropping frames.
- Dropped frames are increasing: investigate the connection from your computer to the streaming server and whether your bitrate is sustainable.
- OBS reports rendering or encoding trouble: reduce the work your computer must do to compose and encode the stream.
- OBS shows no dropped frames, but viewers buffer: consider viewer-side internet and device differences, as well as whether the stream’s bitrate is too demanding for some viewers.
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, published June 12, 2021, explains that OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render a scene. The Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide, published June 9, 2021, notes that viewers can report buffering even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames.
Fix dropped frames and connection instability
Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter
- While the stream is running, inspect OBS’s stats and connection status. If the dropped-frame count is increasing, treat the issue as a network or bitrate problem first—not an encoding problem by default.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection for a test if you are currently on Wi-Fi. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A cable can help test the connection path; it will not fix rendering or encoding overload.
- Check whether other network software, devices, or traffic may be competing with the stream. OBS’s connection guide also recommends trying a different server and reviewing network software and hardware.
Choose a sustainable bitrate
OBS’s connection guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. This is a troubleshooting starting point, not a guarantee of stability or a universal YouTube encoder setting. Available upload capacity can vary, so if dropped frames persist, lower the bitrate and check whether the counter stops rising.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If changing the connection, bitrate, server, and relevant network software or hardware does not resolve persistent dropped frames, OBS advises contacting your internet service provider. The route to the streaming server includes equipment and routing outside OBS’s control.
Fix rendering or encoding overload
If connection drops are not the signal and OBS reports rendering or encoding problems, reduce the workload. OBS has to compose and render the scene before it can encode the output, so complex scenes and resource-intensive applications can contribute to overload.

- Test with a simpler scene to see whether the problem disappears.
- Close applications you know are GPU-heavy, such as other demanding games or graphics workloads.
- Reduce costly sources and filters in the OBS scene.
- If needed, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and check whether performance improves.
On Windows, OBS says running the program as administrator can resolve GPU overload in many cases. These steps address computer workload; they are not substitutes for fixing a connection that is dropping frames.
If OBS is steady but viewers still buffer
When OBS is not dropping frames, viewer reports may reflect differences in location, internet quality, or device capability. A bitrate and stream quality that play smoothly for one viewer may not work as well for another. Consider lowering the bitrate to make playback more accessible, then ask affected viewers whether the change helps. Do not diagnose this as an OBS dropped-frame problem unless OBS’s own counter supports that conclusion.
