To make a radio-style YouTube livestream from prerecorded videos, send a playlist through an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room: verify your channel, create or schedule the stream, configure the encoder to play your files, check the incoming preview, then start and monitor the broadcast. YouTube handles the live connection; playlist loading, looping, and advancing are controlled by the encoder you choose.
Before you start: check eligibility and prepare your videos
YouTube’s current getting-started guidance requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and a streamer at least 16 years old. Check the channel’s live-streaming eligibility before building the setup; restrictions can prevent a broadcast from starting. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Choose the video files and decide what should happen when the playlist reaches its end: stop, repeat, or move to another set. Those behaviors are encoder-specific, not YouTube Studio playlist settings. Confirm that your encoder can load the intended files, advance through them as expected, and maintain audio/video sync. If unattended operation matters, check how the encoder behaves after a file or connection interruption.
Use only video and music you have the rights or permissions to stream. Having a file available does not establish permission to broadcast it, and the encoder setup cannot determine whether your content is authorized.

Create the YouTube livestream

In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. Choose Stream to create a stream now, or open Manage → Schedule stream to schedule a future broadcast and create a watch page viewers can find and receive reminders for. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

In Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and stream key. In your encoder, select YouTube as the destination if it offers that option; otherwise paste the URL and key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

In the encoder, load your prepared files into its playlist or media source and set the desired order and end behavior. Software differs, so use that application’s current instructions for its controls rather than looking for a playlist-loop setting in YouTube Studio.

Choose an encoder protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for general encoder streaming. HLS is intended for supported use cases such as HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, and YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency. For a basic prerecorded-video playlist, use the standard encoder setup unless you have a specific reason to use HLS. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Start the encoder so it sends the feed to YouTube. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and inspect both image and sound. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready.
Set quality and test before broadcasting
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your encoder and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s guidance is to match quality to the available connection and test the setup; there is no single bitrate that is right for every resolution and frame rate. Check the current recommended encoder settings for your target quality in YouTube’s bitrate guidance, then test with audio and movement similar to what the actual broadcast will contain.
For HLS ingestion specifically, YouTube’s requirements include 1–4-second segments, TS segment format, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those are protocol requirements for HLS segments, not settings for your editorial playlist of video files. If you do not need HLS, the standard RTMPS encoder workflow is simpler.
Test the complete path before the event: file playback, playlist advancement, audio/video sync, incoming preview, and what happens if the encoder or connection drops. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Monitor and end the stream
Keep an eye on the encoder and YouTube’s stream health while the playlist runs. Confirm that the expected file is playing, that audio remains audible and synchronized, and that the encoder has not stopped or stalled. When finished, end the broadcast using the encoder and Live Control Room workflow, then verify the stream’s status in Studio.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an archive will be available for a continuous broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

You cannot go live: confirm the channel is verified, meets the age requirement, and has no live-streaming restriction from the past 90 days.

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: check that the stream URL and key were copied correctly and that the encoder is sending to the intended stream. If you suspect the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.

The preview is missing or wrong: verify the encoder is running and sending the intended source, then wait for the incoming preview before clicking Go live.

The playlist stops or repeats unexpectedly: inspect the encoder’s playlist and end-of-list settings. These controls differ by application; they are not managed by YouTube Studio.

Picture or sound breaks up, or audio drifts out of sync: run a representative test, check the source files and encoder playback, and reduce the selected quality if the upload connection cannot sustain it. Monitor the incoming preview and stream health.

HLS is delayed or rejected: HLS has higher latency than RTMP and requires the segment and playlist behavior specified by YouTube. Use RTMPS for a typical playlist broadcast unless a supported HLS use case requires otherwise.
