Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFirst identify whether the mismatch is constant or grows over time, then determine where it appears: in the OBS recording itself, or only after delivery to YouTube. A fixed offset usually calls for adjusting the relevant OBS audio source for future recordings or shifting the audio track in an editor. Growing drift points instead to timing issues to investigate, such as sample-rate mismatch, independent audio-device clocks, or missed frames. These are different problems, and a one-time offset is not a reliable fix for progressive drift.
“Pre-recorded YouTube stream” can mean either an OBS recording uploaded as a regular YouTube video or a prerecorded file played through OBS into a YouTube Live encoder. Keep those paths separate: YouTube’s encoder guidance addresses live tests and settings, not a special repair for ordinary uploaded videos.
Identify which YouTube workflow you are using
If you recorded gameplay or other content in OBS and later uploaded the file, diagnose the saved recording and compare it with its YouTube playback. If you play a prerecorded file through OBS into a YouTube Live encoder, test that live delivery path separately. The distinction matters because the available YouTube guidance covers live encoder configuration and testing; it does not establish that YouTube automatically causes or repairs sync problems in ordinary uploads.
Use a local copy of the recording whenever possible. It lets you tell whether the mismatch began during capture or appeared somewhere in the upload or live delivery workflow.

Check whether the sync error is fixed or progressive
Compare a clear event near the beginning and end
Choose an event that is easy to match in picture and sound, such as a clap, a sharp in-game action, or a spoken consonant. Compare its timing near the start of the recording with another clear event near the end. Note whether the sound leads or trails the picture, and whether the gap stays about the same or grows. This is a practical diagnostic, not a source-defined timing threshold.
- About the same gap at both points: the offset is likely constant. Correct the relevant source timing for future output, or shift the audio track in an existing file.
- A gap that gets larger over time: investigate clocks, sample rates, recording timing, and OBS performance before trying a fixed offset.
Fix a constant audio offset
For future OBS output
Once you have confirmed which way the audio is displaced, adjust the audio sync offset for the relevant OBS source. The direction matters: audio that leads the picture needs a different timing adjustment from audio that trails it. Make a short test recording and compare the same kind of clear event before relying on the change. OBS controls can vary by version, so check the installed version’s audio controls rather than assuming a particular control location.

For a recording that already exists
Open the file in an audio or video editor and shift the audio track relative to the picture. Confirm alignment at both the start and end afterward. If the gap changes over the length of the file, a single shift will not correct the whole recording; investigate progressive drift instead.
Investigate audio that drifts farther out of sync
Align the audio sample rates
Check that the audio device’s sample rate matches the rate selected in OBS. A mismatch is one timing issue to rule out when the gap grows during a long recording. Change one relevant setting at a time, then make another test and compare the start and end.

Consider separate device clocks
Multiple independent USB audio devices can have clocks that drift relative to one another. This is a possible cause, not a guaranteed diagnosis. In a setup where separate devices appear to drift, routing sources through a common audio interface may be worth considering; it is conditional advice from a third-party troubleshooting article, not an official OBS requirement or a guaranteed fix.
Review OBS frame statistics and system load
Check OBS statistics for skipped or missed frames. Rendering and encoding use system resources, so performance trouble is one possible contributor to investigate. OBS’s performance guidance discusses simplifying scenes and limiting a game’s frame rate to reduce load. Retest after changes rather than assuming that every audio-sync fault is caused by performance. Network dropped frames during a live broadcast are not interchangeable with every local recording sync problem.

Compare the local recording with YouTube playback
Play the saved file locally and compare the same identifiable events with the YouTube version. If the local file is already out of sync, focus first on capture and recording. If the local file is aligned but YouTube playback differs, retain the local file and identify whether you uploaded a video or sent a live encoder feed before testing further.
For a YouTube Live encoder workflow, YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement. That is useful for checking a live delivery setup, but the guidance does not establish a specific defect or universal fix for prerecorded streams, or for ordinary uploaded videos. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

Choose a recording format for safer recovery
For future OBS recordings, the OBS recording guide recommends MKV because an interrupted recording is less likely to corrupt the entire file. If an MP4 is needed, OBS includes File → Remux Recordings and supports automatic remuxing. Remuxing changes the container workflow; it is not established as a repair for a fixed offset or progressive drift.
OBS’s formats guide also describes fragmented MP4/MOV as a possible fit for compatible upload and editing workflows. Check that your target editor or service supports the format before choosing it. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide and OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Check first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The same gap near the start and end | Which leads or trails: audio or picture | Adjust the relevant OBS source offset for future output, or shift the audio track in an editor for an existing file. Verify the current controls in your installed OBS version. |
| The gap grows during a long recording | Audio sample rates, separate USB audio devices, and OBS statistics | Align rates, inspect frame statistics, and consider common-interface routing only if separate device clocks are relevant to your setup. |
| The local file is aligned, but YouTube playback differs | Whether the workflow was a normal upload or a live encoder feed | Keep the local file for comparison; for live encoding, run a representative test with audio and movement. |
| A recording was interrupted or is awkward to upload or edit | Recording container and target software compatibility | Consider recording MKV and remuxing if MP4 is needed; consider fragmented MP4/MOV only when the target workflow supports it. |
| OBS reports performance trouble or missed frames | Rendering and encoding load | Reduce scene or game load and retest; do not assume performance explains every sync issue. |
For frame or encoding performance steps, consult OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide. The clock-drift discussion is from a third-party diagnostic; treat it as a possibility to test, not a conclusive cause: Audio drifts out of sync during long recordings.
Or let it run in the cloud
