You do not need to buy a dedicated streaming PC or paid encoder. You do need a verified, eligible YouTube channel, a stable upload connection, and music rights that cover live use. “Free software” does not remove electricity, internet, computer wear, or licensing costs.
Before you set up the stream: clear the music rights
Choose music based on its actual permission for your intended livestream, not on a label or description that says “free.” YouTube says music that is safe to use is public-domain music or music used with permission; a Content ID claim can still affect music advertised as free. Safer starting options
- Your own music: Use it only if you control the relevant rights, including any samples, recordings, compositions, or other contributors’ work.
- YouTube Audio Library: YouTube recommends its Audio Library for royalty-free music and sound effects, and says its catalog is copyright-safe. Check each track’s attribution and usage instructions in YouTube Studio before using it.
- Third-party music with explicit permission: Confirm that the permission covers livestreaming, the territories where viewers may watch, and commercial use if you intend to monetize. Ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted so YouTube’s systems recognize the permission.
Do not assume a subscription or online “free” label is enough
Do not rebroadcast tracks from YouTube Music, Spotify, radio, or another creator as a shortcut. The guidance cited here does not establish that as permitted, and YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube identifies content, it may show a warning and placeholder; unresolved use can interrupt or terminate the stream. A license does not necessarily prevent a match if the rights holder needs to allowlist your channel. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Creator Music is not a workaround for a live music stream: its licensed or revenue-sharing tracks are for long-form videos, not livestreams. The cited YouTube help page says the feature is currently available to U.S. YPP creators, with expansion to creators outside the U.S. pending; it is not an established option for creators in India. See Creator Music eligibility and usage information. Being in India does not relax YouTube’s copyright enforcement or replace the need for permission.

Check that your channel can livestream
- Verify the channel and check YouTube Studio for any live-stream restrictions. YouTube’s stated requirements include no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days and a channel owner who is at least 16 years old.
- Enable live streaming early. First-time access may take time to activate. YouTube for Artists advises enabling live streams at least 24 hours before going live.
- Prepare a YouTube live event in YouTube Studio. You will connect OBS using the stream URL and stream key. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your event.

Set up OBS and send the stream to YouTube
OBS is open-source software available at no charge. YouTube’s encoder setup explains how to connect an encoder with the stream URL and key; its guidance also notes that expensive equipment is not required to get started. Download OBS from obsproject.com, then use this basic workflow:

- Create the event in YouTube Studio. In the live control room, create or schedule a stream and locate the provided stream URL and stream key. Exact labels can vary as YouTube updates Studio.
- Add a visual in OBS. Create a scene and add an image or a permitted looping visual. A static image is sufficient for a music stream; do not use artwork, footage, or branding without the necessary rights.
- Add the music source. Add the audio source that plays your cleared tracks. For a playlist, verify that playback continues through the list and does not introduce unlicensed audio, silence, or unintended desktop sounds.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key (or use the connection method shown by YouTube and OBS). Treat the key like a password.
- Set output to match your source and connection. Avoid choosing a resolution or bitrate your upload cannot sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends leaving upload-bandwidth headroom and testing the setup; use its current recommendations for the resolution you select rather than assuming one bitrate fits every connection.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Start streaming from OBS, confirm that YouTube receives the signal, and check the event preview, audio level, picture, and connection stability before making the event public.
- Go public and monitor it. Once the test is clean and your music rights are in order, set the event’s visibility as intended and start the stream. Keep OBS and the computer running, and periodically check YouTube’s live control room and OBS for connection or copyright warnings.

Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube warns: “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If you need a saved YouTube archive, plan to end and restart the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours, and keep a local recording if the recording matters. A restart creates a break for viewers and does not guarantee OBS or YouTube will reconnect successfully. Monitor the new event after restarting. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

What “free” costs in practice
OBS has no purchase price, but a 24/7 broadcast still depends on the computer, electricity, and internet connection staying available. A home internet interruption, power cut, computer sleep or crash, OBS failure, or YouTube interruption can take the stream offline. Leave enough upload capacity for a stable broadcast, disable sleep or automatic shutdown while streaming, and test how your computer behaves during an extended run. These are operating costs and reliability trade-offs, not reasons you must buy dedicated hardware to begin.
Can you monetize the stream?
Livestream monetization is conditional. YouTube Partner Program eligibility includes 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours over the previous 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views over 90 days; other account and policy requirements and YouTube review also apply. Eligibility alone does not clear music rights or guarantee that a repetitive stream qualifies to earn. YouTube’s guidance permits monetization of Audio Library music under its terms. Third-party music permission must expressly cover commercial use if you plan to monetize, and copyright claims or reused or non-original content can limit earning. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies alongside the track terms.

- YouTube will not let the channel go live: Check channel verification, age eligibility, any restriction from the previous 90 days, and whether first-time live access has finished activating.
- The stream shows a copyright warning or placeholder: Stop and investigate the identified content. Remove it or obtain permission covering livestream use; if already licensed, ask the owner whether channel allowlisting is required. Do not assume a “free” label or a paid music subscription resolves the match.
- The picture or audio stutters: Check OBS’s connection status and YouTube’s incoming-stream health, then reduce output demands or improve the upload connection. YouTube advises maintaining upload headroom and testing before a public broadcast.
- The stream ends or disappears overnight: Check power, sleep settings, internet interruptions, OBS errors, and YouTube notifications. A home setup cannot continue through a loss of power or connectivity; restart it and verify that the event is live again.
- The archive is missing: If the broadcast passed 12 hours, YouTube may not have captured it. Use planned restarts before that point and make a local recording when you need a dependable copy.
