Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a finite video file that should repeat, put -stream_loop -1 before its -i input option. For a file being sent as a live stream, also put -re before that input so FFmpeg reads it at its native frame rate. These options address a file reaching its end; they do not fix a dropped connection, encoder crash, or stopped live source.
Loop a local video file indefinitely
Use this command shape, keeping your existing stream mapping and encoding options in the bracketed section:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 [your existing mapping/encoding options] -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
Replace input.mp4 with your file, the bracketed text with the relevant options from your command, and the destination with your YouTube server URL and stream key. This is a template, not a tested command for every input, FFmpeg build, or channel configuration. Keep the key private: it is a credential that lets an encoder connect to your stream.
-stream_loop -1is an input option; FFmpeg documents-1as an infinite loop and0as no loop. Put it before the-ifor the file it applies to. FFmpeg documentation-rereads the file at its native frame rate (equivalent to-readrate 1), pacing file input for real-time output. It too belongs before the relevant-i. FFmpeg documentation- With multiple inputs, put each input option before the corresponding
-i. Do not add-reindiscriminately to a camera or incoming live feed: FFmpeg warns that low read rates on real-time capture or live inputs can cause packet loss.
Preserve your current audio/video mapping, codecs, and output destination unless those have separate errors. If you do not want the video to repeat, an infinite loop is the wrong solution: use a planned playlist or sequence, provide another source, or end the event when the file finishes.

Check that the problem is actually end-of-file
A loop flag only addresses a finite file reaching its end. First distinguish that from FFmpeg exiting early or YouTube ceasing to receive valid media.
- Check whether FFmpeg exits near the file’s duration. If it exits earlier, inspect its output for write, protocol, or encoder errors rather than assuming the file simply ended.
- Add
-stream_loop -1and-rebefore the file’s-i, without changing unrelated options. - Run a private or unlisted test and check both audio and video across the loop boundary. A particular file, container, or command can behave differently at the transition, including in timestamps or continuity.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that its preview receives the stream and that the event is in the expected state. FFmpeg still running does not prove YouTube is receiving valid media.
- If FFmpeg remains running but YouTube stops receiving the stream, examine the FFmpeg logs, network or RTMP connection, media compatibility, and YouTube’s stream health separately.
Match the YouTube connection and encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder workflow requires its server URL and stream key. In Live Control Room, check the stream settings and use the connection details for the stream you intend to send. YouTube recommends RTMPS and publishes encoder settings; match the video and audio codecs, keyframe interval, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate to the current guidance and to what your encoder actually outputs. YouTube stream settings · YouTube encoder settings
Those settings help compatibility and quality but do not make a file loop. YouTube’s bitrate guidance varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use its current table for your target output rather than copying a single bitrate out of context. FFmpeg option behavior and platform settings can change; check the documentation and the manual for your installed FFmpeg version before relying on a deployment.

Keep the input, connection, and YouTube event separate
“Keep streaming” can mean several different things. Identify which part stopped before changing the command:
| Situation | What to do | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| A finite local file should repeat | Loop that input with -stream_loop -1; use -re to pace file output. |
Network interruption, encoder failure, or a YouTube ingest problem. |
| A finite file should play once | Prepare a playlist or another planned sequence, or end the event normally. | A completed file cannot supply new content by itself. |
| A camera or incoming network feed stopped | Investigate source availability and transport; do not treat it like a local file reaching end-of-file. | -stream_loop does not restore a live source. |
| A scheduled YouTube event behaves unexpectedly | Check its preview, Go live state, and auto-start or auto-stop settings separately from FFmpeg’s input options. | YouTube event controls do not make a file loop. |
YouTube explains that ending a stream involves stopping content sent from the encoder. Auto-stop is a separate stream setting; it does not repeat an input file. YouTube encoder workflow · YouTube stream settings
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg still exits when the file ends
Confirm that -stream_loop -1 appears before the correct file’s -i. If there are several inputs, it must precede the input it is meant to loop. Check the local FFmpeg manual and logs if the option is placed correctly but the command still exits.

The loop runs, but YouTube loses the stream
Do not treat looping as transport recovery. Inspect FFmpeg’s logs and the network or RTMP connection, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Verify the server URL, key, and encoder compatibility independently.
Video or audio breaks at the loop boundary
Test the exact file and command privately, checking both tracks through the transition. Container and timestamp behavior can vary by media and command; the loop option alone does not guarantee a seamless join.

The stream starts, but the event does not appear live as expected
Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and event state, including auto-start and auto-stop settings. The encoder connection, event controls, and file-loop behavior are separate parts of the workflow.
The stream key may have been exposed
Treat it as compromised and rotate it in Live Control Room. Do not post a real key in command examples, logs, screenshots, or public chats.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving an FFmpeg computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera and it streams to YouTube only.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. The same product is on every plan; only the billing length changes. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. For details, visit StreamNeo. Start the free first day.
For an individual FFmpeg file that simply reaches end-of-file, the direct fix is the input loop option. Use it only when repeating the file is intended; investigate the source, connection, encoder, or YouTube event when those are what stopped.
