For a typical 24/7 YouTube stream, start with OBS at 1920×1080, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and AAC stereo. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, but that bitrate is suitable only if your actual, sustained upload speed can support it with headroom. If it cannot, step down to 720p30, for which YouTube recommends 8 Mbps. These are platform recommendations—not guarantees about any Indian internet connection.
Recommended OBS settings to start with
Use this as a baseline for ordinary SDR gameplay or ambient video, then test it under the conditions in which the stream will run. OBS labels can vary by version, operating system and encoder, so match the target properties below to the available options rather than relying on a particular menu name.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920×1080 | Full HD output; YouTube detects stream resolution by default, which YouTube recommends. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | A practical starting point for a sustained stream. Use 60 fps only if the content benefits from it and your encoder and upload connection can sustain the higher load. |
| Video codec | H.264 | The bitrate table below applies specifically to H.264. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest. |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps at 1080p30 | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate at this mode; lower the resolution if your connection cannot reliably support it. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | These are YouTube’s listed stereo AAC guidance values. |
| Color for SDR | Rec. 709, 8-bit | YouTube lists this color space and bit depth for SDR. |
YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its bitrate recommendations differ by codec; do not apply the H.264 numbers below to an AV1 or HEVC encoder. See YouTube’s encoder settings for codec-specific guidance.
Choose a bitrate that matches resolution and frame rate
These are YouTube’s H.264 values, stated as recommended bitrate and minimum bitrate. Treat the minimum as a platform figure, not a promise of acceptable picture quality or stable delivery in your circumstances.

| Output mode | Recommended H.264 bitrate | Minimum H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
If 1080p30 at 14 Mbps is not stable, try 720p30 at 8 Mbps before trying to push the connection harder. Select 60 fps only when smoother motion is worth the extra encoding and network demand. A higher number is not automatically better if the encoder drops frames or the connection cannot sustain it.
Check India-side upload capacity before going live
YouTube’s guidance does not specify an India-only OBS preset, regional upload benchmark or special ingest bitrate. Use the same platform settings, but measure the sustained upstream bandwidth available to the streaming computer at the actual location and time of the broadcast. An advertised plan speed or download result does not establish available upload capacity.

- Run a speed test that measures upload, preferably under the same network conditions and time of day expected during the stream.
- Leave 20% headroom against available upload bandwidth, as YouTube recommends. The total outgoing bitrate must fit the upstream capacity; other users and devices sharing the network can reduce what is available to OBS.
- Where practical, use a wired Ethernet connection for the streaming computer. It can help avoid one source of local wireless variability, but does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Choose a lower output mode if sustained upload, encoder capacity or observed stream health is unreliable at the target bitrate.
YouTube’s streaming tips explain bandwidth headroom and connection disruption. No India-wide ISP or power-outage statistic establishes what a particular creator’s connection can sustain.
Set up the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s streaming settings. The key directs the encoder feed and allows YouTube to accept it; treat it like a password.
- Keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in OBS before streaming again.
- Use YouTube’s default stream resolution detection unless you have a specific reason to set resolution manually and the stream key and settings support the choice.
- Choose RTMP or RTMPS for ingest; YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit.
YouTube transcodes a live stream into multiple formats for viewers on different devices and network conditions. Your OBS output is the feed you send to YouTube; viewers may receive a transcoded version.

Choose latency for the kind of stream you are running
For an unattended gameplay loop or ambient stream with little real-time audience interaction, normal latency is a reasonable starting point. YouTube explains that lower latency can increase playback buffering, while low and ultra-low latency are intended for interactive broadcasts. Neither low nor ultra-low latency supports 4K. This is a practical use-case choice based on YouTube’s latency guidance, not a separate rule for 24/7 channels. See YouTube’s latency settings.
Test the whole setup before leaving it unattended
- Run a private or otherwise controlled test using representative gameplay or video movement, plus the audio you plan to broadcast.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Check for dropped frames, interruptions, missing audio, incorrect color or a picture that does not match the intended output.
- Confirm that the public or unlisted watch page opens and plays as expected for a viewer.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking that the player rolls over to the backup.
- For longer use, monitor the stream rather than assuming a successful launch proves it will stay healthy. Network, ISP, electricity, computer and platform failures can still interrupt a broadcast.
A backup encoder, cable or power backup can reduce some risks, but none guarantees uninterrupted service. A 24/7 stream also requires an operating computer and a stable connection if OBS is the method keeping it live.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation
YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams beyond 12 hours. A single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast therefore should not be treated as a reliable way to create a complete YouTube archive. If a complete recording matters, record locally and verify the file, or schedule shorter sessions and check that each archive was created. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.

OBS settings cannot make a video safe to rebroadcast. Use gameplay, music and other material only when you have the rights or permission needed for the intended live use. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live stream, and a rights holder’s restrictions can affect the broadcast. Also consider whether a channel built around repeated or minimally changed footage offers enough original value for its intended audience; technical uptime does not itself establish compliance with YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshooting common 24/7 stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS drops frames or YouTube reports an unstable stream | Outgoing bitrate exceeds sustained upload capacity, or the connection is disrupted or shared. | Measure upload at the streaming location, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, reduce bitrate or output mode, and check whether other network use is competing for capacity. |
| Stream fails when the encoder reconnects | Connection disruption, incorrect stream URL or key, or a key that has been reset. | Check the URL and current key in Live Control Room, update OBS if the key changed, and test a controlled reconnect before unattended use. |
| Viewers report buffering | Connection instability, a bitrate that the sender cannot sustain, or latency settings that prioritize interaction. | Check stream health and upstream stability; consider lowering the output mode. For a non-interactive continuous stream, try normal latency rather than lower latency. |
| Audio is absent, clipped or out of sync | Incorrect OBS audio source, level or sample setup, or a problem introduced during encoding. | Check the active audio source and meters in OBS, verify AAC stereo settings, and include representative audio in the next test. |
| The live broadcast has no complete archive | The stream exceeded 12 hours; YouTube may not capture it, and DVR rewind may be limited. | Record locally and verify the recording, or use shorter broadcast sessions and check each archive. |
| The stream will not accept the selected resolution | Manual output settings may not match the stream configuration or key. | Return to YouTube’s recommended default resolution detection, then test again in Live Control Room. |
