Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →First find out whether the mismatch is steady, grows as the stream runs, or jumps at each loop boundary. Those patterns point to different causes: a small timestamp offset may suit a steady mismatch, while growing drift or a boundary jump calls for checking durations, timestamps, and how the loop is built. Measure the offset near the start and again after several minutes or loop repetitions before changing the command.
Measure what the sync error is doing
Use a clear cue visible and audible in the program, such as a clap or a flash with a sharp sound. Compare it near the beginning, after several minutes, and on both sides of a loop boundary. Note whether audio leads or lags video and approximately how much.
- Steady offset: the difference stays about the same. Investigate start timestamps or a fixed delay.
- Growing drift: the difference increases or decreases over time. Investigate timestamps, stream durations, rates, or frame-rate conversion before trying a fixed delay.
- Boundary jump: sync changes abruptly when content repeats. Investigate whether audio and video repeat the same material on the same timeline.
This distinction matters more than whether the mismatch is described as “audio ahead” or “audio behind.” FFmpeg-user mailing-list participants have discussed sync problems in live-input setups, but a 2020 report concerned separate video and sound outputs, not a reproducible diagnosis for a YouTube loop stream. Read the discussion.
Check the source streams and command structure
Inspect timestamps, durations, and rates
Before changing timing, inspect the media streams and compare their start times, durations, packet timestamps, and sample or frame rates. A practical first pass is to use FFmpeg’s companion probe utility:

ffprobe -show_streams input.mp4
ffprobe -show_packets input.mp4
Use the output to see whether audio and video begin together, whether their durations agree, and whether packet timestamps progress as expected. Packet listings can be long; inspect representative sections at the start, later in the file, and near the end. These commands are a diagnostic workflow, not proof that a particular source is defective.
Identify what is being looped
“Loop” can describe different operations. FFmpeg’s video loop filter repeats video frames; it is not the same as repeating a whole input that contains both audio and video. If the command loops only video while audio follows a different duration or repetition rule, the streams can diverge or jump out of alignment at a boundary. Check how each stream is repeated and whether each new pass starts on a coherent shared timeline. See FFmpeg’s loop filter documentation.

Also distinguish a single audio-and-video input from separate audio and video inputs. With separate inputs, their start timestamps and clock basis matter; with one input, a general input-start alignment option is not a substitute for repairing bad timing inside that file.
Choose a correction based on the pattern
For a stable offset, test -itsoffset
FFmpeg documents -itsoffset as an input timestamp shift: a positive value delays the streams of the corresponding input. Because FFmpeg input options apply to the following input, put the option immediately before the input you intend to shift. Test a small change on a short local output and verify the direction and result rather than assuming which sign is needed.

ffmpeg -itsoffset 0.10 -i input.mp4 ... output.mp4
This is only an illustration of option placement, not a universal command. The appropriate input, offset, and remaining command depend on the actual media and pipeline. A fixed timestamp shift can address a stable start offset; it does not correct drift that continues to grow. See the FFmpeg advanced options.
For growing drift, investigate timing rather than adding delay
Compare the actual audio and video durations and timestamp progress, including at the end of the source and across repeated passes. Check whether the source itself has a rate or timestamp problem and whether the command changes frame timing. If the source needs normalization or retiming, the right operation depends on what the measurements show; the symptom alone does not establish which filter or value to use.

For separate inputs, consider -isync only when its requirements fit
-isync adjusts for a difference in input start times. It is intended for separate inputs with usable start timestamps based on a shared clock source—not as a general repair for a single file’s audio. FFmpeg warns: “The source timestamps of the two inputs should derive from the same clock source for expected results.” Its documentation also says no adjustment is made if either input lacks a start time. Check those conditions before using it. See FFmpeg’s advanced options documentation.
Review output frame-rate handling when the command changes video timing
FFmpeg’s output -r can duplicate or drop frames to achieve a constant frame rate. The per-stream -fps_mode controls synchronization and frame-rate mode. These options affect video timing and may be relevant if the output frame cadence is being changed; they are not generic audio-delay controls. Consult the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version and avoid copying examples that may be deprecated: video options and advanced video options.

Validate the local output and YouTube ingest separately
- Make a short local output that contains several loop repetitions and representative movement and sound.
- Check the sync cue at the beginning, later in the output, and around every repeat boundary. Confirm the mismatch stays fixed or is resolved rather than merely appearing corrected at one point.
- When local output is correct, test the stream privately or unlisted on YouTube and monitor its stream health. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement.
- Check encoder settings against YouTube’s current ingest recommendations: a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), 44.1 kHz audio for stereo, or 48 kHz for 5.1. These are platform recommendations, not a diagnosis or cure for a timestamp bug. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream health troubleshooting.
Do not confuse viewer latency with internal audio/video sync. YouTube defines latency as the time between capture at the encoder or camera and presentation to viewers. A stream can have high end-to-end latency and remain internally synchronized, or be out of sync at any latency setting. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | First checks | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Audio and video are offset by about the same amount throughout | Compare their start timestamps; confirm which input is shifted. | Test a small -itsoffset on the appropriate input and verify the sign on a short output. |
| Sync is good at first but worsens over time | Compare durations, packet timestamp progression, and actual sample/frame rates. | Investigate source timing or output frame-rate changes; do not expect a fixed delay to stop continuing drift. |
| Sync jumps when the picture repeats | Check whether the video loop filter repeats frames while audio or the whole input follows another loop rule. | Make audio and video repeat coherently on the same timeline, then test across several boundaries. |
| Separate live inputs start out misaligned | Determine whether both inputs have start timestamps derived from the same clock. | Use -isync only if its documented requirements are met. |
| The local file is synchronized but the YouTube stream is not | Compare local output with the ingested stream; inspect encoder settings and YouTube stream health. | Test with representative sound and motion and adjust only after separating an ingest issue from a source-timing issue. |
