To run a 24/7 YouTube stream with FFmpeg, create a live broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, copy its current RTMPS server URL and stream key, configure FFmpeg with YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, then test and monitor the feed. Keeping it live around the clock also means planning for the machine, source media, network and power to keep working—and for FFmpeg to recover when they do not. YouTube’s guidance applies worldwide; upload capacity and reliability must be checked at your actual location in India.
Before you start
You need a YouTube channel with access to live streaming, FFmpeg installed on a machine that can reach YouTube, and a video or other input source. YouTube’s documentation does not establish a universal upload speed or uptime level for Indian locations. Test sustained upload from the place where FFmpeg will run, and make sure the connection can carry your chosen video and audio bitrate with room for variation.
- Decide where the source media will live and which machine will run FFmpeg.
- Check the network at that location and whether it permits the connection to YouTube’s required ingestion endpoint.
- Consider local power and connectivity risks based on your own experience. Backup power or connectivity may be appropriate, but there is no one-size-fits-all requirement.
- Keep your YouTube stream key private. If you share a script or log, redact the key first.
Create the YouTube broadcast and get its connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast and configure its audience, title, visibility and other video details there.
- In the stream settings, copy the current server URL and stream key. Use the values shown for your broadcast rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. YouTube’s stream resource contains the delivery settings used to configure an encoder (YouTube Live Streams API).
- Choose the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides one. RTMPS uses TLS; Google’s ingestion guidance specifies the
rtmpsprotocol, a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and port 443 (Google RTMPS ingestion guide).
A stream and a broadcast are related but distinct in YouTube’s Live API: the stream describes how audio and video are sent, while a broadcast represents the live event. The API documentation discusses a continuous 24/7 feed and an additional broadcast sharing its stream, an advanced arrangement rather than a requirement for a basic FFmpeg setup (YouTube broadcast lifecycle guide).
Choose FFmpeg settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward SDR setup, H.264 with AAC is a practical baseline. YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds (YouTube encoder settings).

H.264 bitrate recommendations
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, not a promise of viewer quality or a required India-wide internet speed. Match the setting to the resolution and frame rate you will actually send.
| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube also publishes minimum values; do not confuse those with its recommendations. For continuous operation, confirm that the actual connection can sustain the selected video bitrate plus audio and network overhead rather than relying on a single short speed-test result.
Audio and color
YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo audio. Its 5.1 guidance is 48 kHz and 384 kbps, with 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS supported only for AAC. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. HDR needs more deliberate codec choices: YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Example FFmpeg command for a looping file
Replace video.mp4, the resolution, frame rate and bitrate with your own choices. Replace the example URL and key with the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The command below uses H.264, AAC, CBR-style rate control and a 2-second keyframe interval; it is an example to test with your installed FFmpeg build, not a guarantee of permanent connection or recovery.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "video.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5M -minrate 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_SERVER/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
-rereads a file at its intended playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. Remove it if the input should not loop.-r 30sets 30 fps;-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, or 2 seconds at 30 fps. At 60 fps, a 2-second GOP would be 120 frames.-b:v,-minrateand-maxrateset the video rate target and bounds;-bufsizeis part of rate control. This example uses 5 Mbps because that is YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p30, not because every stream should use that bitrate.- The example does not scale or re-encode audio from unusual source formats. Confirm your input’s dimensions, frame rate, audio channels and codecs, and adjust or add filters if they do not match the intended output.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start the FFmpeg command and wait for Live Control Room to report that it is receiving the stream.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm that the picture, motion and audio behave as expected, and review any warnings or messages in Live Control Room.
- Use a test clip with motion and audio similar to the material you plan to stream. YouTube specifically recommends testing representative movement and sound.
- Confirm the broadcast is live and that playback works as intended before relying on the setup.
- Stop and restart the process deliberately once to verify that you know how to reconnect it and recover from a normal interruption.
YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and messages while testing. Neither a sample command nor YouTube’s documentation promises that one FFmpeg process will remain connected indefinitely.

How to keep an FFmpeg YouTube stream running 24/7
A looping command handles repeated playback of a file; it does not by itself handle a crashed process, a lost input file, a network outage, a machine reboot or a power failure. FFmpeg has recovery-related options, but behavior depends on the input, the installed build and the failure. Test any recovery flags against your real setup, and pair them with process supervision that can restart FFmpeg when it exits.
- Monitor: Check FFmpeg output and YouTube Live Control Room for stalled input, dropped connection or stream-health warnings.
- Supervise: Use an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor to restart the process after an unexpected exit. Set restart behavior deliberately so a broken input does not cause an uncontrolled restart loop.
- Protect the source: Keep the media accessible and verify storage space. For a playlist, ensure every referenced file remains available and test transitions and loop behavior.
- Plan recovery: Decide who can access the machine, stream settings and network when the feed fails. Test a network interruption and machine restart if those are realistic risks.
- Recheck YouTube: After a reconnect, confirm in Live Control Room that the intended broadcast is receiving and live. Do not assume an FFmpeg reconnect alone restores every part of the broadcast lifecycle.
You can run FFmpeg on a local machine or on rented compute; the right choice depends on where the media is, who maintains the machine, network and power resilience, monitoring access, and current total cost. The reviewed YouTube documentation does not endorse a hosting provider or establish provider availability or pricing in India.
Troubleshoot common connection and stream problems
RTMPS connection fails before video reaches YouTube
Check that the URL begins with rtmps, is the valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint currently shown for your stream, and uses port 443. Google identifies wrong protocol, wrong port and missing SNI handling as possible SSL failures. An invalid certificate can occur when an RTMP endpoint is used where RTMPS is expected; a timeout can occur when a client attempts cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint. Verify the full URL, TLS support, port and server-name handling before changing encoder settings (Google RTMPS ingestion guide).

YouTube receives the stream but reports poor health
- Compare the selected resolution and frame rate with the bitrate you configured. Use YouTube’s recommended value for that combination as a reference.
- Measure sustained upload at the encoder location while the stream is running. A brief speed test does not show whether the connection remains stable.
- Confirm that video is encoded at a stable bitrate and that the keyframe interval is 2 seconds or less than or equal to YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
There is video but no sound, or audio is distorted
Check that the input actually contains an audio stream and that FFmpeg is mapping and encoding it as expected. Confirm the sample rate and audio bitrate against the intended format; YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo AAC or MP3 guidance. Test with a representative clip and listen in the YouTube preview.
The stream stops after a failure
Determine whether FFmpeg exited, lost access to its input, or remained running without a usable connection. Inspect its logs, restore the underlying source or network, then restart through your supervisor and verify the broadcast in Live Control Room. Recovery flags can help with some input failures, but their effect must be tested with the input and FFmpeg build you use (FFmpeg documentation).

Only stream material you have the rights to use. A continuous loop does not make copyrighted music, game footage or other video safe to rebroadcast. YouTube’s copyright systems and channel monetization policies are separate considerations: permission to stream material does not automatically establish eligibility for monetization, and repetitive or reused programming may raise channel-policy issues. Check YouTube’s current rules for your specific content before making a 24/7 feed public.
