To keep an FFmpeg YouTube live stream running after you close a terminal, first verify the FFmpeg command interactively, then run it under a Linux service manager such as systemd. Include FFmpeg’s -nostdin option so it does not check for terminal input, protect the YouTube stream key, and configure deliberate restart behavior. A service can restart a failed process; it cannot by itself fix a bad key, failed input, network outage, or unhealthy YouTube ingest.
Before you create the service
Decide what FFmpeg will send and where it will run. A prerecorded file, a live camera, and a network feed have different pacing and failure behavior, so one command is not suitable for all three. An existing Linux machine can host the process; a VPS is an optional remote host, not a requirement imposed by FFmpeg or YouTube.
- Install an FFmpeg build that supports your chosen input, encoder, and output protocol. Find its absolute path with
command -v ffmpeg; the example below uses/usr/bin/ffmpeg, which may differ on your system. - Choose the input file or live source, output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Check that the host has enough CPU or supported hardware encoding capacity if you will encode rather than pass through a compatible stream.
- Have access to the stream URL and key shown for the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.
- Confirm your Linux distribution’s systemd version and documentation before relying on optional directives or hardening settings; service-manager syntax and available options can vary.
Test FFmpeg in a terminal first
Do not troubleshoot FFmpeg, the source, YouTube ingest, and systemd all at once. Run the complete command interactively with a test stream before turning it into a service. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal and that the preview has the expected audio, motion, resolution, and quality. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement and monitoring stream health and messages. (YouTube encoder settings)
For a prerecorded file, FFmpeg’s -re option can pace file input in real time. It is not a universal live-input option: for a camera or network feed, use the appropriate input format and source-specific reconnection behavior instead. Explicitly test what happens at the end of a prerecorded file if you need it to loop.

Choose YouTube ingest and encoding settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Its published encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not copy a bitrate from one mode to another. The figures below are Google / YouTube Help recommendations published in 2026 and accessed October 3, 2026. Check YouTube’s current table when you configure a different mode. (YouTube encoder settings)
| Mode | Published bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended |
| Stereo AAC audio | 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps are listed in YouTube’s advanced recommendations |
These are mode-specific recommendations, not guarantees of a healthy stream. Measure available upload bandwidth and leave capacity for variation. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); it says AV1 is not supported for HDR and suggests considering HLS if the encoder cannot provide the required HDR capability over RTMP.
For a keyframe interval close to two seconds, set the GOP to roughly twice the frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps. A 60-frame GOP at another frame rate represents a different duration. Select an encoder and options supported by your installed FFmpeg build.

Create a protected systemd service
Store the ingest credential separately
Create a dedicated, unprivileged service account and an explicit working directory. Put the ingest URL and key in a protected environment file or another secret mechanism readable only by that account and administrators. Keep the key out of publicly readable unit files, documentation, screenshots, and logs. If the key is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the service configuration.

Systemd does not perform arbitrary shell-style variable expansion in every part of ExecStart. Do not assume that writing ${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL} there will work as it would in a shell. Use the environment-expansion rules supported by your systemd version or a carefully permissioned wrapper script, and verify that the final command receives the intended endpoint without printing the secret.
Use a unit as a structural example
This illustrates the shape of a service, not a universal copy-and-paste unit. Replace the account, paths, input, encoding settings, and secret handling for your host. The example’s video bitrate is illustrative, not a recommendation for every output mode; choose settings from YouTube’s current guidance and your available upload capacity.

The example’s -re is for pacing a prerecorded file. Remove it for a variable or live input unless that workflow calls for pacing. The example uses a 60-frame GOP; at 30 fps this is two seconds, so adjust the GOP to the actual frame rate. Its illustrative video rate may be inappropriate for the selected resolution, frame rate, or codec. The sample audio settings match YouTube’s listed advanced recommendation for stereo AAC.
Make FFmpeg noninteractive
Put -nostdin among FFmpeg’s global options. FFmpeg otherwise checks console input for commands such as q and ?; the FFmpeg project notes that this interaction can cause a background process to suspend. Redirecting standard input from /dev/null is the documented alternative. (FFmpeg FAQ)
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Enable, start, and verify the service
- Save the unit in the location used by your distribution and check its directives against the local systemd documentation.
- After the interactive test succeeds, reload systemd’s unit definitions, then enable and start the service using your distribution’s normal systemctl workflow. Enabling it sets it to start according to the unit’s install configuration; starting it launches it now.
- Check the unit’s status and journal output. Look for the actual executable and input errors, unsupported encoders, permission failures, rejected arguments, and connection errors. Avoid exposing a credential in command output or logs.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and verify that it reports a healthy ingest and that the public or unlisted preview behaves as expected. A systemd state of “active” confirms a process is running, not that viewers can see a healthy stream.
- Keep monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. A service manager can detect and restart a process failure, but the operator still needs to diagnose a persistent source, network, configuration, or ingest problem.
Choose recovery behavior deliberately
Restart=on-failure is one possible policy: it can bring the process back after an unsuccessful exit. A restart delay, such as the illustrative RestartSec=5, can prevent immediate repeated launches, but choose a delay and rate limits appropriate to your installed systemd version and workload. Avoid rapid, unbounded restart loops.

Restarting is useful for transient process exits, but it does not repair a wrong key, missing file, unsupported setting, unavailable source, rejected stream, or persistent network fault. If the service repeatedly fails, stop the loop, inspect the journal, correct the underlying cause, and then start it again.

| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| Service exits immediately | Read the journal. Check the absolute FFmpeg path, service-account permissions, input path, secret-file readability, argument syntax, and whether the installed build supports the chosen encoder and protocol. |
| Process suspends or seems interactive | Include -nostdin or redirect stdin from /dev/null; check that the unit is not attached to an unintended terminal. |
| YouTube receives no signal | Confirm the current ingest URL and key in Live Control Room, the endpoint configuration, network reachability, the output muxer, and RTMPS support in the FFmpeg build. |
| Connection succeeds but stream health or quality is poor | Compare actual codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe cadence, and bitrate with YouTube’s current mode-specific table. Check upload capacity and YouTube’s health messages. |
| Service continually restarts | Use the journal to distinguish a transient crash from a deterministic configuration failure. Fix the root cause and configure a sensible delay and rate limit for the installed service manager. |
| Stream key appears in a log or file others can read | Rotate the key in YouTube Live Control Room, replace it in the protected service configuration, and check for other exposed copies. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a Linux host and service, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start the free first day.
Cost and operational trade-offs
Running FFmpeg yourself avoids a required subscription to a streaming service, but the host, reliable upload connection, storage, monitoring, and maintenance remain your responsibility. A VPS is an option if you need a remote machine to stay available, not a requirement; compare its recurring cost, bandwidth, access control, and operational work with using an existing Linux computer. Do not choose a host solely because the service can restart: it cannot make an unstable source or connection reliable.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules
Using FFmpeg or a service does not grant rights to the video or music you stream. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s copyright requirements and channel policies before running a long loop. A technically healthy ingest does not establish that a stream complies with YouTube’s rules or that the channel will be eligible for monetization.
