Run FFmpeg as a systemd service by first testing a command that streams to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio, then placing that working command in a protected service unit. systemd can restart a failed local FFmpeg process, but that alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast: verify the platform’s preview and stream health separately.
1. Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the stream you intend to run.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from its encoder settings. Use the actual URL displayed there rather than assuming a fixed ingest hostname. YouTube describes this handoff in its encoder setup instructions.
- Keep the key private. Do not paste it into a public script, repository, forum post, or unprotected log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the credential used by the service.
2. Prefer RTMPS and choose compatible encoding settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. Copy the RTMPS address provided in Live Control Room, and check its scheme and hostname if a connection fails. YouTube’s guidance notes port 443 as a troubleshooting option where appropriate to the supplied address. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Choose settings for the actual source and intended output, not from a universal recipe. YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations include RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264, its examples recommend 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not independent performance-test results. Check the current encoder settings table for your resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Stream copy: Avoids re-encoding and reduces CPU work, but only works when the input’s codecs and format are acceptable for the intended stream.
- Re-encoding: Lets FFmpeg produce a chosen codec, frame rate, bitrate, and audio format, at the cost of CPU capacity. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the selected encoders.
FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS protocol support and related options in its protocol documentation. The exact command depends on your input file or live source, installed FFmpeg build, and desired settings.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Test FFmpeg interactively before adding systemd
Build and run the FFmpeg command in a terminal first. Use the input, video and audio codecs, bitrate, keyframe interval, RTMPS URL, and stream key appropriate to your setup and YouTube’s current guidance. Do not move a command into a service until it connects and produces the expected output.
Keep the stream key out of the command you share or save in a broadly readable file. For a service, arrange for a protected credential source accessible only to the service account; avoid putting the secret in a world-readable unit file or publishing it through shell history. The precise credential mechanism depends on your distribution and systemd version.

4. Create a systemd service for the tested command
Use a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account for the stream, a defined working directory, and an explicit path to FFmpeg. Put the tested command and protected credential reference in the service configuration appropriate to your host. Verify directive names, credential handling, file permissions, and restart policy against the installed systemd documentation for your distribution and version; those details vary, and no particular unit is guaranteed here.
Set a restart policy only after deciding what local failures it should recover from. A restart can bring back an FFmpeg process that exits, but it cannot by itself determine whether YouTube considers the stream part of the same event, whether ingest is healthy, or whether the stream has been archived.

5. Enable the service and inspect its status
After saving the unit and configuring its protected credential source, reload systemd’s unit definitions, enable the service if it should start at boot, and start it. Then inspect the service state and its journal using the commands for your distribution. Restrict journal access where necessary because command-line arguments or application diagnostics can expose sensitive data if configured carelessly.
Confirm the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room: check that the preview appears, the intended event is receiving the feed, and stream-health messages do not report a problem. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, checking upload capacity with a speed test, and monitoring health during the stream. See its encoder guidance and stream-health information.

6. Troubleshoot common failures
Connection timeout or SSL error
- Compare the service’s URL with the current URL in Live Control Room; verify the RTMPS scheme and hostname.
- Check whether port 443 is appropriate for the address YouTube supplied, as described in its RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
- Confirm that the host can reach the ingest endpoint and that the service is using the expected credential.
YouTube rejects the feed or reports poor health
- Read the specific Live Control Room health message rather than assuming a systemd failure.
- Check resolution, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio/video codecs against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
- Test upload capacity and run a representative preflight with the same source and settings. A successful FFmpeg connection does not establish that the encoded feed meets YouTube’s recommendations.
The key was exposed
Reset the key in Live Control Room, replace the value in the protected credential source, and restart the service with the new key. Do not rely on deleting a visible copy as a substitute for rotation.
FFmpeg restarts, but the broadcast does not continue as expected
Check both the systemd service and Live Control Room. systemd supervises the local process; YouTube’s event and archive behavior is separate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. A process restart does not guarantee that YouTube will treat subsequent ingest as an uninterrupted broadcast. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
