Connect OBS to YouTube with the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, check the preview and audio, then start the live stream. Use rain audio you created or have licensed for YouTube live use and any replay; YouTube scans live streams for third-party material and may interrupt a stream over a match.
Before you start
- A computer with OBS Studio and an internet connection. You do not need to buy a new computer or special streaming hardware just to combine a dark visual with prerecorded rain audio.
- A rain recording you created or have permission to use in a YouTube live stream and, if you keep the archive, in a replay.
- A black image, a dark still image, or an OBS Color Source for a plain black screen.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; the current overview sets the minimum age at 16. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours.
You do not need a special YouTube format for sleep ambience. OBS controls such as exact menus may differ by version and operating system.
Build the dark-screen rain scene in OBS
Choose the visual
In your OBS scene, add either a black Color Source or an image source containing a black or dark still. A simple black screen is sufficient; a creator-made still gives you control over the look without changing the audio setup.
Add and loop the rain recording
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select the add button and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, choose the rain audio file, and enable Loop so playback starts again when the finite file ends.
- OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio formats. Play the source and check the OBS audio meter and your listening output before streaming.
If you want a playlist instead of one file, OBS’s VLC Video source can play playlists and has a Loop Playlist option; VLC must be installed. For a single rain file, Media Source is the simpler choice.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room and create a stream. To start later, schedule it under Manage.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the corresponding server and key fields in OBS.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials; if yours is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait until the preview appears in Live Control Room, then select Go live.
- Confirm the picture is dark as intended, the rain is audible, and the loop continues. Monitor audio and video while live; a short private or unlisted test can expose setup problems before a longer session.
Audio rights, interruptions, and monetization
Choose audio you are entitled to stream
Use your own recording or a license that covers YouTube live streaming and any archived replay you intend to keep. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A persistent match may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even when you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for live use. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the creator.
Do not assume a loop qualifies for monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies also apply to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 update describes repetitive or mass-produced material with little variation as inauthentic content; examples include similar videos with little variation and image slideshows with minimal narrative, commentary, or educational value. A rain loop is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility. If monetization matters, make the sound and presentation genuinely original and distinctive, and check the current policy rather than relying on a loop alone.

End the stream and handle the replay
When finished, stop the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not guarantee every archive will succeed in every circumstance. Check the resulting recording and its rights before publishing or relying on it as a replay.
Common problems and fixes
- No sound in the preview: Confirm the Media Source is active, the file plays in OBS, and its audio meter responds. Check the source’s audio routing and OBS output settings.
- The rain stops after one play: Reopen the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For a VLC playlist, use Loop Playlist and verify VLC is installed.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck that OBS has the current stream URL and key from the intended Live Control Room stream. If the key was exposed, reset it and update OBS.
- The stream is interrupted for a rights match: Stop and review the match in YouTube. Use original audio or confirm the license covers live use, and ask the rights holder about channel allowlisting where applicable.
- The scene is not actually dark: Check the source order and visibility in OBS; a full-screen image or other source layered above the black source can cover it.
- First livestream setup is unavailable: Check channel verification and restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-stream enablement.
