YouTube receives that feed; the repeat setting belongs to the encoder, not YouTube’s player. In OBS, use Media Source → Loop for one file or VLC Video → Loop Playlist for several videos.
What looping prerecorded video on YouTube Live means
YouTube Live receives a live feed from an encoder. The encoder reads a prerecorded file or playlist and sends its video and audio to YouTube; when playback reaches the end, its loop setting starts the source again. Viewers watch the result on a live watch page, but the footage remains prerecorded—it does not become live camera footage.
YouTube’s player does not provide a native file-loop toggle for this workflow. The encoder is responsible for replaying the source and maintaining the outgoing feed.
Before you start
- Confirm live-stream eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Clear the rights to everything in the feed. That includes video, music, images, and other material. YouTube’s terms require the provider to have the necessary rights, including relevant music licensing rights. See YouTube Terms of Service.
- Choose a source type. A single video is simplest as an OBS Media Source. For several videos in sequence, use an OBS VLC Video source and make a playlist.
- Keep the file available to OBS. A local source must remain accessible to the computer running the encoder. If you move or rename the file after setting up the source, check that OBS still points to the right location.
Loop one prerecorded file in OBS
- Open OBS and add a source in the scene you will stream. Choose Media Source.
- In the source properties, select the local video file you want to broadcast.
- Enable Loop. This makes the Media Source start again after it reaches the end.
- Check the OBS preview and audio meters. Confirm the intended video and sound are playing before connecting the broadcast.
OBS documentation lists supported video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Loop a playlist in OBS
- Add a VLC Video source to your OBS scene.
- Use the source properties to build a playlist from the files you want to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the final playlist item.
- Preview the playlist and check that both its video and audio behave as intended before going live.
The one-file and playlist methods use different source types and repeat controls: Media Source → Loop for one file, and VLC Video → Loop Playlist for a playlist. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions describe the setup.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into the corresponding stream settings in OBS. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its live-stream settings guidance. Keep the key private; someone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start streaming from OBS. If you scheduled the broadcast, check the incoming preview in Live Control Room and click Go live when YouTube prompts you.
- Check the live watch page from a viewer’s perspective, and monitor OBS and Live Control Room for picture, sound, and connection problems.
- When you are finished, stop the encoder output. End the stream in Live Control Room when applicable.
Rights, Content ID, archives, and monetization
Content ID can interrupt a live broadcast
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if the identified material remains. Even if you have a licence, a live stream may be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright issues.

An uninterrupted stream does not prove the archive is cleared
YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends if the creator chooses to archive it. A broadcast that played without interruption is not proof that every element was rights-cleared. Review any archived version for claims as well as monitoring the live feed. See YouTube’s copyright guidance.
Archiving and monetization are separate questions
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is not a guarantee that an archive will remain available in every circumstance. Separately, YouTube’s channel monetization policy applies to live streams: reused content without significant original commentary, substantive changes, or educational or entertainment value may be ineligible, and review can consider the channel as a whole. Repeating a file does not itself establish monetization eligibility. See YouTube’s encoder instructions and YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Choose a local encoder or cloud looping
| Approach | How the loop runs | What you need to account for |
|---|---|---|
| OBS on your computer | OBS repeats a Media Source file or VLC Video playlist and sends the feed to YouTube. | The computer, OBS, source files, and internet connection must remain available while streaming; you monitor the encoder and broadcast. |
| StreamNeo | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and let StreamNeo loop it from the cloud. | It plays uploaded video to YouTube, not a camera feed. It is an option when you do not want a computer or home connection to stay on. |
For a local OBS setup, YouTube supports encoder software and hardware and recommends evaluating options for your needs; dedicated broadcast hardware is not established as necessary just to loop a file. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Common problems and fixes
- The video stops instead of restarting: Confirm that Loop is enabled on the Media Source, or Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source. The repeat setting belongs to the source that plays the file.
- The wrong item plays or the source is blank: Reopen the OBS source properties and check the selected file or playlist paths. Preview the scene before sending it to YouTube.
- YouTube is not receiving the feed: Check that OBS has the correct server URL and stream key for the stream you created in Live Control Room, then confirm that streaming is active in OBS.
- The stream is interrupted after it starts: Check Live Control Room for YouTube notices, including copyright detection. A licence does not necessarily prevent a Content ID interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
- The live feed works but the archive has a claim: Check the archived stream after it ends. YouTube may make Content ID claims on an archived live stream after the broadcast, when it is archived.
