Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo restart a YouTube stream after FFmpeg exits on a Raspberry Pi, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd and configure a restart policy. FFmpeg’s reconnect options solve a different problem: some apply to temporary interruptions of supported HTTP inputs, not to restarting a dead FFmpeg process or reconnecting a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output.
First identify what failed
Before changing settings, determine whether FFmpeg stopped, is still running but no longer sending a healthy stream, or is running into trouble reading its input.
- FFmpeg exited: use an external supervisor to launch it again.
- FFmpeg is alive, but an HTTP input has a temporary interruption: HTTP-specific reconnect options may help, if the input and failure match the option’s documented behavior.
- FFmpeg is alive but YouTube reports a stream problem: inspect FFmpeg output, stream health, encoder errors, CPU load, the stream key, and the outbound connection. A process restart may not address the cause.
A restarted FFmpeg process does not establish that YouTube resumed the same broadcast or watch URL. Confirm the event’s status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Use systemd to restart FFmpeg after it exits
On a Raspberry Pi OS installation using systemd, a service unit can place FFmpeg under an external supervisor. The general approach is to define how FFmpeg starts, then configure and verify the service’s restart behavior on the installed operating system. A Raspberry Pi-targeted project documents running FFmpeg under systemd on Debian/Raspberry Pi OS (project documentation). Treat it as an implementation example, not a universal unit file: confirm directive names and behavior against the systemd documentation for your release before installing a configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Make the FFmpeg command work on its own. Confirm that the input is available, the encoder settings are valid, and YouTube accepts the stream before putting the command under supervision. Use the same source and representative audio and movement as the planned broadcast.
- Define a service for that command. Keep the FFmpeg command and its arguments in the service configuration rather than relying on an interactive terminal session. Use the unit syntax supported by the systemd version installed on the Pi.
- Choose a restart policy deliberately. Configure the service to restart when FFmpeg exits, and set any restart delay or rate limits supported by the installed systemd version. A policy that retries forever can repeatedly relaunch a command that will never succeed; a delay or start limit can prevent a rapid restart loop.
- Protect the stream key. Do not put it in a public script, shared configuration, log, or shell history. Restrict access to any file or service configuration that contains it. The specific credentials method depends on your system; check the documentation for your OS and systemd version rather than copying an unverified recipe.
- Verify the service and the broadcast. Check the service manager’s status and logs to see whether FFmpeg exited and restarted, then check the Live Control Room for YouTube’s stream health and broadcast state. A service restart confirms only that the process was relaunched.
Understand FFmpeg’s reconnect options
FFmpeg documents reconnect controls in its HTTP protocol section. They are for HTTP input behavior, not universal switches for recovering an RTMP/RTMPS YouTube output or restarting an exited process. Use them only when the relevant input protocol and interruption match the documented option (FFmpeg Protocols Documentation).
reconnectretries a disconnection before EOF.reconnect_at_eoftreats EOF as an error, which can be useful for live or endless streams.reconnect_on_network_errorhandles TCP/TLS errors during connection.reconnect_on_http_errorcan retry specified HTTP status codes or classes, such as 4xx or 5xx.reconnect_streamedapplies to streamed, non-seekable inputs.
The protocol documentation also describes retry and delay bounds. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on your Pi for exact option syntax and available controls. An input reconnect does not resolve an invalid YouTube stream key or restart FFmpeg after it exits.

Diagnose the cause before allowing repeated retries
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing the messages reported by the encoder and Live Control Room. Its troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the encoder version, the stream’s picture and sound, encoder errors, and CPU load; if the encoder appears healthy, test the outbound connection. For a third-party encoder start error, YouTube advises getting a new stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
- Invalid or outdated stream key: check the key in Live Control Room; if YouTube reports a third-party encoder start error, follow its advice to obtain a new key and update the encoder.
- Missing or broken source: verify that the camera, media file, or other input is available to the FFmpeg command. A supervisor can restart the process, but cannot supply a missing source.
- Encoder or configuration error: inspect FFmpeg’s error output and correct the command or codec settings. Repeated launches will not repair a consistently invalid configuration.
- High CPU load: check the Pi’s load and encoder errors. A restart policy does not guarantee the device can encode the selected settings.
- Outbound network failure: test connectivity from the Pi to the streaming service. A persistent network fault can make every restart fail.
- YouTube broadcast state is unclear: inspect the Live Control Room. FFmpeg running again is not proof that the same broadcast or watch URL resumed.
Keep the stream compatible with YouTube
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codecs; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS for encryption and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. For H.264 at 720p30, its guidance lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a Raspberry Pi can encode a particular profile or resolution; choose settings the device can sustain and match outbound capacity to the selected bitrate. Check YouTube’s current settings guidance because recommendations can change (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
