For a stream encoded on your own equipment, estimate electricity from the setup’s measured average power draw and your applicable local tariff; then add broadband, backup power, equipment, and any other service costs separately. A useful starting point: a constant 100-watt load uses about 72 kWh in a 30-day month.
Estimate the electricity cost from your actual setup
For a constant load running around the clock for 30 days, calculate:
Monthly energy use in kWh = average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = average watts × 0.72

These are calculations from assumed loads, not measurements of particular computers or streaming devices. Multiply your monthly kWh by the applicable per-kWh energy charge to estimate the energy portion of the bill. Add fixed charges, duties, fuel or power-purchase adjustments, and other applicable bill items separately.

Measure the whole streaming setup
A plug-in electricity usage monitor can help you measure the actual draw. Include the computer or encoder, router or modem, and any peripherals that must stay on. A computer’s power-supply rating is not its normal consumption; use the setup’s average measured watts where possible. If the load varies, measure over a representative period rather than assuming it always runs at its maximum.
Why there is no single Indian rate to multiply by
Retail electricity tariffs depend on the state, utility, and consumer category. The Central Electricity Authority’s Electricity Tariff & Duty and Average Rates of Electricity Supply in India provides tariff schedules and category details, but your current state or utility schedule and electricity bill are the relevant references for an estimate. The Ministry of Power explains that state electricity regulatory commissions determine retail tariffs and that state governments may provide subsidies. A nationwide “typical” per-unit rate can therefore misstate what a household actually pays.

Time-of-day rates can also matter where they apply. In a June 23, 2023 release, the Ministry of Power described solar-hour tariffs as 10–20% below normal and peak-hour tariffs as 10–20% above normal for specified consumer categories and implementation dates. That dated announcement is not a guarantee that every household currently has those exact rates. Check the current state tariff order and your bill.
Costs beyond electricity
Internet connection
Your upload connection needs to sustain the stream’s bitrate with headroom and remain reliable. The appropriate bitrate depends on the stream’s resolution and frame rate; there is no one internet-speed figure that fits every stream. YouTube’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page gives current encoder and bitrate guidance by format. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health. The available evidence does not establish a single current broadband price for India, so use the price of your actual ISP plan.

Backup power and continuity
A UPS is an optional cost if you want short-duration backup for a local streaming setup. Size it using the measured load and the runtime you need; it cannot guarantee continuity through a longer power cut or an internet outage. The Ministry of Power says electricity supply and distribution are within state governments’ purview and describes a 24×7 supply rule subject to commission-specified lower hours for some categories. This does not mean every location has interruption-free service.
Equipment, content, and operation
Include the cost of equipment or replacement parts if they are relevant to your setup. Content rights, labor, and any hosting or streaming service are separate considerations. Without the actual equipment, ISP plan, tariff category, backup needs, and service choices, an all-in monthly total would be guesswork.

With a local setup, your equipment and connection remain part of the operating cost while the stream runs. A cloud service changes that cost structure: your computer does not need to stay on for the stream to continue, but the service has its own charge. Check the stream settings before calculating bandwidth
Electricity use is only one part of the cost. The stream format affects the upload capacity you need, so choose YouTube’s current encoder settings for your resolution and frame rate rather than relying on an old bitrate figure. YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats, but the incoming stream still needs to be configured and delivered correctly. Test before starting and monitor stream health while live.
