To loop local videos in a YouTube Live broadcast, configure the playback source in OBS: use a Media Source with Loop enabled for one video, or a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled for an ordered playlist. YouTube’s viewer-side playlist loop repeats playback for the person watching; it does not make an OBS source repeat during a live stream.
Choose the right kind of loop
There are two different controls people may mean by “loop a YouTube playlist.” If you are watching a playlist on YouTube, use YouTube’s playback controls. If you are broadcasting local video files as a YouTube Live stream, set the repeat behavior on the OBS source that plays those files.
- One local file: Add an OBS Media Source and enable Loop.
- Several local files: Add an OBS VLC Video source, arrange the files in order, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC Media Player must be installed.
- Watching a YouTube playlist: Use YouTube’s own Loop or Repeat control; this affects viewer playback, not the live encoder.
Loop one local video in OBS
- In OBS, select the scene that should show the video.
- In the Sources panel, click + and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- Choose the local video file.
- Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties, then confirm the settings.
- Start playback and check that the file begins again after it reaches the end.
OBS documents Media Source support for formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. The loop setting repeats the file when playback completes. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Loop several local videos in order
- Install VLC Media Player if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the scene and click + in the Sources panel.
- Choose VLC Video and create or select the source.
- Add the local video files to the source playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents this option as restarting the source after it has played through the files; it is on by default.
- Preview the source and verify both the file order and the transition from the last file back to the first.
See OBS’s VLC Video source instructions for its playlist and loop settings.

Check what happens when the source is hidden
A VLC Video source’s documented default visibility behavior is Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If a scene change hides the source, playback may stop and then restart when it becomes visible again. Review the source’s Visibility Behaviour setting if the playlist needs to continue across scene changes, and test the planned transitions rather than assuming playback will carry on uninterrupted.
If you only want a YouTube playlist to repeat while watching
- Desktop: Open a video in the playlist, expand the playlist panel, and click Loop.
- Android: Play the playlist and use the Loop control in the playlist control box. YouTube says tapping the control again sets the current video to repeat.
- TV or gaming console: Select the playlist, open playback controls, and set Repeat until it indicates Repeat • Playlist.
These instructions control playback in the YouTube app or site for the viewer. They do not configure an OBS broadcast source. See YouTube’s instructions for looping videos and playlists.

For an embedded YouTube player, the YouTube IFrame Player API also documents a loop parameter. To repeat a single embedded video, its documentation says to set the playlist parameter to that video’s ID as well as loop=1. This is for embeds, not OBS source playback.
Test the stream before leaving it running
A loop setting controls media playback; it does not guarantee that the computer, OBS, network connection, or broadcast will remain available indefinitely. OBS recommends a short test stream before the first broadcast. Test that the source loops, that scene transitions behave as intended, and that the stream appears as expected before relying on it unattended. Check that you have the rights to stream the media and comply with YouTube’s rules; looping itself does not grant permission to use the content.
