For most creators setting up a first 24/7 ambient stream, start with OBS. Its visual scenes, sources and settings make it easier to inspect and adjust a broadcast. Choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable building and supervising a command-line playback pipeline. Either way, the deciding factor is whether your computer, internet connection and stream configuration can keep working continuously—not the encoder alone.
YouTube supports ongoing live feeds, but that is not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime. Test your actual media and sustained upload before relying on a stream, and check YouTube Studio for account-specific live-stream eligibility.
OBS or FFmpeg: which should you use?
| What matters | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| How you work | Visual scenes and sources, with settings you can inspect in a graphical interface. YouTube describes encoder setups generally as supporting elements such as overlays and hardware (YouTube Help: live streaming encoder setup). | A command-line toolkit for composing media-processing workflows and scripts (FFmpeg documentation: ffmpeg documentation). |
| Repeatability | A saved setup can suit an operator who prefers a graphical workflow and occasional hands-on adjustments. | A script can make a known pipeline repeatable, but you must also arrange process supervision, restarts, logs and stream-state checks. This is a workflow distinction, not a reliability test. |
| Troubleshooting | OBS exposes dropped-frame feedback and documents connection troubleshooting (OBS Help: dropped frames). | FFmpeg offers command-line controls and output; the cited documentation does not establish that its monitoring is easier or more dependable. |
| Best fit | New operators, visual layouts, scene changes or a workflow where someone can intervene. | Technically confident operators automating a known playback pipeline, including headless setups. |
This is a recommendation based on documented workflows, not a head-to-head reliability benchmark. Neither application can make an unstable upload connection reliable.
Check the channel and connection before configuring the encoder

Measure your own sustained upload
Choose a quality your connection can reliably sustain. Do not assume that one bitrate suits every creator in India: the official guidance does not establish typical Indian upload performance, ISP data caps, electricity reliability or local hosting costs. Test from the actual location and connection you will use, and check your provider’s terms, including any data limits.
Set YouTube-compatible output
For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum, and audio codec requirements. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Exact bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current live table rather than copying a single figure out of context: YouTube live encoder settings.

Build and test the continuous stream
OBS workflow
- Prepare the channel: In YouTube Studio, confirm live access and create or open the intended live event. Copy the stream key from YouTube’s live-control workflow and keep it private.
- Create the scene: In OBS, add the media source or sources for the ambient programme. Arrange the visual output and confirm the audio source is present and audible.
- Configure output: In OBS settings, set the chosen resolution, frame rate, supported encoder, bitrate, CBR mode and two-second keyframe interval, using YouTube’s current table for the exact bitrate and the selected codec and video mode.
- Connect to YouTube: In OBS’s stream settings, select the YouTube service or configure the server and stream key supplied by YouTube. Do not publish or share the key.
- Run a representative test: Test with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast. Check that the video and sound loop as intended, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages before relying on the stream.
- Monitor during operation: Watch the OBS dropped-frame counter and YouTube’s stream health. If the stream is unstable, investigate the connection and bitrate before increasing quality.
FFmpeg workflow
FFmpeg is suited to an operator who already knows the intended input, looping behaviour, output format and process-management environment. There is no single safe command or bitrate for every file and connection; use the same YouTube codec, CBR, keyframe, audio and bitrate requirements above, with values chosen for your actual media and sustained upload.

- Prepare the media pipeline: Identify the input file or playlist and verify that the chosen playback approach repeats it cleanly. Confirm that the output video and audio streams use the intended codecs and parameters.
- Configure the destination: Use the RTMP/RTMPS server address and stream key shown in YouTube’s live-control workflow. Treat the key as a credential; do not put it in a publicly visible script or log.
- Set encoding deliberately: Configure CBR, the selected resolution and frame rate, the current YouTube bitrate for that mode, and a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds). Use a supported audio codec.
- Test before the event: Send a representative test with comparable movement and audio. Confirm playback, looping, stream health and the expected YouTube broadcast state.
- Supervise the process: Arrange monitoring for process exit, output errors, connection loss and logs. Decide how a restart should work and verify that reconnecting does not leave the YouTube event in an unintended state. FFmpeg itself does not remove the need to supervise a long-running process.
What YouTube means by a continuous feed
YouTube’s API documentation describes an ongoing 24/7 feed and a model in which a stream carrying media can be associated with broadcast videos, including a second simultaneous broadcast using the same stream: broadcasts and streams. This describes API mechanics, not a promise that an encoder, connection or channel will stay live without interruption.
Prevent dropped frames, interruptions and rights problems
Diagnose an unstable output
OBS says an increasing “Dropped frames” counter with a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the connection to the server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate (OBS Help: dropped frames). Reduce the output demand to a level the connection can sustain, investigate the network path, and test again. A higher bitrate is not a fix for an unreliable connection.

Clear rights before a long broadcast
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match may interrupt or terminate a stream. A licence alone may not prevent interruption: the rights holder may also need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Use media you created or have the necessary rights to stream, and arrange any required allowlisting before relying on a long broadcast (YouTube Help: live stream copyright).
Do not assume ambient means monetizable
YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams and expects eligible content to be original and authentic. Repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible; the ambient format alone does not determine the result. Add distinct creative value and do not assume that stream duration or watch time guarantees monetization (YouTube Help: channel monetization policies).

YouTube’s India-localized earnings guidance, accessed in 2026, lists ad-revenue eligibility as 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the prior 365 days or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the prior 90 days. Age, country availability, policy compliance and other requirements also apply; these thresholds are not an approval forecast, and individual monetization features have their own rules. Check the current requirements in YouTube Studio’s Earn page (YouTube Help: YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility).

- Dropped frames keep rising: Check connection stability and whether the upload can sustain the configured bitrate. Lower the demand to a tested, sustainable setting and watch stream health again.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare the outgoing codec, CBR mode, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings with the current YouTube guidance. Test with representative motion and sound.
- The stream stops after a process or connection failure: Check whether OBS or FFmpeg is still running and whether the connection has recovered. For FFmpeg, inspect process output and logs; verify restart supervision and the YouTube event state before resuming.
- A live stream is interrupted despite a licence: Check for a third-party match and ask the rights holder whether the channel must be allowlisted for Content ID.
- The channel cannot start the broadcast: Check YouTube Studio for account verification, live access and any current restriction before changing encoder settings.
