To make prerecorded videos appear as a continuous YouTube Live broadcast, send them to YouTube Live through an encoder or a cloud streaming service that supports unattended playback. Looping a video or playlist in the regular YouTube player only repeats playback for each viewer; it does not create a live broadcast. You can run the encoder on a computer, use a cloud service, or use dedicated hardware. The right choice depends on where you want playback, connectivity, scheduling, and recovery to be handled.
What you need for a continuous YouTube Live stream
An encoder takes your video files and sends a live stream to YouTube. YouTube describes it this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The encoder must support the playback workflow you want: the ability to select prerecorded files, play them in sequence or repeat them, and keep sending the feed while unattended. A tool that can encode a live camera or desktop does not necessarily include file scheduling or playlist looping.
You also need a channel that is eligible for live streaming, an internet connection with enough stable upload capacity, and a stream key. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s encoder setup guide before your intended start.
Choose where the stream will run
| Approach | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo cloud service | Streams uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, so your computer does not have to remain on. Its plans include 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and video quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. | Confirm that your files fit the storage included with your slots and that your YouTube stream key is handled securely. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. |
| Software encoder on a computer | Uses a computer to encode and send the video. YouTube supports encoder-based live streams and lists OBS as supporting HLS output; this alone does not establish that OBS schedules and repeats a library of prerecorded videos for unattended use. | Confirm the software supports file scheduling and repeat playback, and account for the computer, power, operating system, network, and a recovery procedure. |
| Cloud service | YouTube identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. | Check the service’s current upload workflow, schedule and playlist controls, plan limits, security, recovery behavior, and pricing before choosing it. |
| Dedicated hardware | YouTube describes AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream as supporting scheduled prerecorded media streamed to YouTube Live without a computer. | Verify current model capabilities, media storage and scheduling limits, network requirements, monitoring, recovery, and availability before purchase. |
These options are not interchangeable. Compare each product’s actual scheduling, repeat, and interruption-recovery features; YouTube’s compatibility listings do not establish every third-party product’s unattended capabilities.

Set up YouTube Live and connect your encoder
- Enable live streaming. Verify the channel and request live-streaming access if you have not used it before. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Check the channel’s eligibility and restrictions in YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Choose a playback method. Select software, cloud, or dedicated hardware that explicitly supports the prerecorded-file workflow you need. Check that it can play a sequence or playlist and repeat it without requiring manual intervention.
- Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Create → Go live, create a stream or schedule one, then set its title, description, audience, and privacy. YouTube documents stream settings, including auto-start and auto-stop, in its live stream settings guide.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Add both to the encoder or service. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it through YouTube’s stream settings.
- Choose an ingest protocol. RTMPS is RTMP encrypted with TLS/SSL; use the YouTube RTMPS preset or the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. YouTube also supports HLS ingest, which has its own requirements and higher latency than RTMP. See the RTMPS guide and HLS setup guide.
- Load the prerecorded programming. Add the files in the desired order, set repeat or playlist behavior, and configure the encoder’s unattended operation. The exact controls depend on the chosen software or service; confirm the stream will continue when one file ends and what it does if playback or the connection fails.
Set bitrate, resolution, and keyframes
Use settings that your encoder supports and that fit your upload connection. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s general guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page to select the bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than guessing.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the source where practical and select a supported output. YouTube’s general encoder guidance allows up to 60 fps.
- Video and audio codecs: For RTMP/RTMPS, use a supported video codec (H.264, H.265, or AV1) and AAC or MP3 audio.
- Bitrate mode: Set constant bitrate (CBR) when the encoder offers it, then use the bitrate YouTube recommends for the output resolution and frame rate.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. If primary and backup streams run simultaneously, budget for both streams plus 20% headroom.
For HLS ingest, follow YouTube’s specific requirements: segment duration of 1–4 seconds, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. HLS latency is higher than RTMP, so choose it only when your encoder and workflow support the required settings.

Test the broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Prepare early. YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. These timings are useful preparation guidance even for a scheduled prerecorded broadcast.
- Check the preview. Confirm that the intended YouTube stream shows the right picture and sound, and that the title, privacy, and destination channel are correct.
- Test representative content. Use a sample with similar motion and audio to the planned programming. Check speech or music levels, clipping, silence between files, aspect ratio, and whether the playlist transitions as intended.
- Confirm bandwidth and health. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s stream health. Leave at least the recommended 20% upload headroom above the total bitrate.
- Plan monitoring and recovery. Decide who or what will detect a frozen picture, missing audio, encoder stoppage, or dropped connection, and how the stream will be restarted. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality and checking local archive growth in its live streaming tips.
Plan for long streams, archives, and restarts
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. An indefinite broadcast should not be treated as one guaranteed, complete archive. Decide whether you will run finite scheduled streams, restart on a defined schedule, or preserve source files separately. YouTube’s DVR guidance explains the viewing limitation, while its stream settings guide describes auto-start and auto-stop controls. Those controls do not guarantee an indefinitely continuous broadcast or archive.
Copyright and channel policy checks
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to use on YouTube Live. A video that is already uploaded or available elsewhere is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast. Review licenses, permissions, music rights, and any applicable restrictions before building a playlist. Repeatedly streaming material you do not have rights to can lead to claims, interruptions, or channel restrictions. Also make sure the channel and its presentation comply with YouTube’s rules; continuous playback does not exempt a channel from platform policies.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Go Live is unavailable | Live streaming is not enabled, first-time activation is pending, or the channel has a restriction. | Check channel verification and live-streaming eligibility in YouTube Studio. Allow up to 24 hours for first activation and review YouTube’s encoder setup guidance. |
| No picture or the encoder cannot connect | Incorrect stream URL or key, wrong destination, incompatible protocol, or network interruption. | Recheck the URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm RTMP/RTMPS or HLS settings match the encoder, and inspect its connection status. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream health warns of connection issues | Insufficient or unstable upload bandwidth, or a bitrate that is too high for the connection. | Measure stable upload capacity, lower the bitrate using YouTube’s recommended settings for your resolution, and retain 20% headroom above total stream bitrate. |
| Video looks soft, stutters, or has audio dropouts | Output settings do not suit the source or available bandwidth, or the encoder is not using recommended settings. | Check codec, resolution, frame rate, constant bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio in YouTube’s encoder settings guide. Preview a representative clip before leaving the stream unattended. |
| Stream ends when a clip finishes | The chosen playback setup may not be configured to advance to the next file or repeat its playlist. | Verify the scheduler’s end-of-file, next-item, and repeat behavior using a test playlist. Confirm that the playback tool supports unattended file scheduling rather than only live-input encoding. |
| Stream stops after a dropped connection | The encoder or service may not automatically reconnect, or the local computer, power, or network may be unavailable. | Use the chosen platform’s documented reconnect behavior and define a manual or automated restart procedure. Do not assume that YouTube will restart the source encoder itself. |
