Run FFmpeg under systemd with Restart=on-failure so the VPS starts it again if the process exits unsuccessfully. For certain output failures, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer also offers in-process recovery options such as attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time. These are separate layers: neither guarantees that YouTube’s live event, playback, or media position will resume seamlessly.
Choose the recovery layer that matches the failure
Use an external service manager for a process that exits, and consider FFmpeg’s output recovery only when the selected output configuration supports it. A service restart starts a new FFmpeg process; it does not fix a bad command, invalid stream key, missing input, or persistent network fault.
| Layer | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg FIFO output recovery | May attempt to recover from certain output failures while FFmpeg remains running. The official documentation describes options including attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time. |
It is not a universal retry mechanism for every publishing protocol or output path. Behavior depends on the muxer, protocol, and installed build. |
| systemd process restart | Starts the FFmpeg service again after a failure covered by its restart policy, subject to its configured delay and start limits. | It does not guarantee the same YouTube live event reconnects, restore the input position, or make playback continuous. |
Check the FFmpeg documentation for FIFO muxer options and the protocol documentation for options supported by your installed version and protocol direction. Do not assume an input-side -reconnect flag retries an RTMP or RTMPS output.
Run FFmpeg as a systemd service
The following is a minimal pattern, not a universal unit for every Linux distribution. Adapt paths, account names, and service conventions to your VPS. Keep the stream key out of world-readable unit files, scripts, and logs; use a protected configuration or secret-management method appropriate to your deployment.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
1. Create a unit around your existing command
Create a service file such as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service with an ExecStart that invokes your tested FFmpeg command. This skeleton deliberately omits the publishing URL and stream key:
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
Group=stream
WorkingDirectory=/path/to/stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [your tested FFmpeg arguments]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Replace stream, the working directory, FFmpeg path, and placeholder arguments with values valid on your VPS. Use a dedicated, restricted service account where practical. The five-second restart delay is an example, not a required value: choose a delay that avoids rapid retries while still meeting your recovery needs. Check your local systemd.service manual and start-limit settings; distribution defaults can differ. systemd project guidance recommends Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal for long-running services; see the project’s NEWS page and the manual for the systemd release installed on your VPS.

2. Reload, enable, and start it
- Save the unit, then reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable it at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Check the service state:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Read recent logs:
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. Follow new log entries during a test withsudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f.
A service showing active (running) only tells you that a process is running. It does not prove that YouTube is receiving usable audio and video.
Use YouTube-compatible ingest settings
For Live ingest, YouTube recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate ranges depend on the video codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the matching values from the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance rather than copying a generic bitrate.

- YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options and AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm compatibility for your exact encoder and ingest path.
- For the listed RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Match your bitrate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate in its table.
- Test with representative movement and audio before the event, and monitor stream health and messages while live.
Encoder settings help YouTube receive a valid stream; they do not change what systemd can recover. The YouTube recommendations are version-sensitive, so verify the live guidance before an event.
Verify recovery at both ends
- After a failure, check
systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceand inspect the service journal for the exit reason and any repeated restart attempts. - Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health and messages. Confirm that the intended live event is receiving the feed.
- Check live playback for moving video and audible sound. A successful process restart is not evidence by itself that viewers are receiving frames and audio.
- If recovery fails repeatedly, fix the underlying cause—such as an invalid key, unavailable input, unsupported output option, or continuing network fault—before allowing more retries.
Process relaunch does not establish that YouTube has resumed the same event or that the stream continues from the same point in the media. Verify the viewer-facing result instead of assuming continuity.

Troubleshoot common restart problems
- The service starts and exits repeatedly: Inspect the journal for FFmpeg’s error and verify the executable path, arguments, input availability, and permissions. A restart policy repeats attempts; it does not repair an invalid command.
- systemd does not restart it: Confirm the service has
Restart=on-failure, reload unit definitions after edits, and check the service’s exit status and systemd start-limit behavior. Consult the local manual because exact defaults depend on the installed systemd version and distribution. - FFmpeg stays running but output has stopped: A process-level policy may not trigger if the process has not exited. If your output path uses the FIFO muxer, check whether its documented recovery options apply to that configuration and build; otherwise investigate the output error in FFmpeg’s logs.
- FFmpeg restarts but YouTube is not receiving the stream: Check the stream key and ingest URL without exposing the key in shared logs, then inspect YouTube Live Control Room for health messages. Confirm that the live event is still in a state that accepts the encoder connection.
- Playback resumes at an unexpected point or appears interrupted: A newly launched process is not guaranteed to continue at the former input timestamp or provide seamless viewer playback. Check the input and live event state, then verify playback directly.
- Retries happen too quickly: Increase
RestartSecand review start-limit settings so a persistent fault does not create a rapid failure loop. Choose values according to the deployment, not a copied one-size-fits-all setting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. See StreamNeo or pricing.
