If OBS shows rising network-dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator, the connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain your configured bitrate. Start by checking OBS and YouTube’s stream-health messages, then test a lower bitrate, OBS network settings, and your local network—one change at a time. The official guidance is general; it does not identify a special India-only setting or a current fault affecting a particular Indian ISP.
First confirm that the problem is network delivery
OBS sends the stream directly from your computer to the streaming service; OBS does not provide an intermediary server. Its Help Portal says an increasing “Dropped frames” counter and a yellow or red connection square indicate that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Too many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, describes this as a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server, typically outside OBS Studio’s control.
Check the network-dropped-frame counter rather than treating every stutter or poor-looking picture as a network fault. OBS also has separate rendering and encoding performance indicators; the cited network guidance does not diagnose those counters. In YouTube Live Control Room, check stream health and any messages about the incoming stream. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the event.
Before changing settings, note when the drops begin, whether they recur, and whether the YouTube health message changes. Test with audio and motion similar to the actual broadcast; a static test screen may not represent the load of a real stream.

Set bitrate for sustained upload, not a speed-test peak
Run an upload speed test before streaming, as YouTube recommends, but plan around a stable result rather than a brief peak. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate. This is a troubleshooting rule of thumb, not a guarantee: sustained capacity, network congestion, and the streaming service’s limits still matter.
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives the following H.264 recommendations. The listed minimum and recommended values are YouTube’s encoding guidance, not proof that a particular connection can sustain them.

For example, if upload reliably sustains 8 Mbps, 75% gives a 6 Mbps video-bitrate starting point. That is simply an application of OBS’s guidance, not a claim about any broadband plan or a promise of stable delivery. If the stream still drops, lower the video bitrate in OBS and retest; do not try to reach a recommended encoding value by consuming all available upload capacity.
Check OBS network settings
- Lower the video bitrate: Open Settings → Output and reduce the streaming video bitrate. Retest under representative conditions before restoring a higher value.
- Check the network interface: Open Settings → Advanced → Network and set Bind to IP to Default.
- Test IPv4 only: In the same Network section, temporarily set IP Family to IPv4 Only. If it does not help, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 option. This is a reversible diagnostic, not evidence that IPv6 generally causes YouTube disconnections.
- On Windows, test the optional network features: Try Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. OBS says users have reported improvement and that these options add useful log detail; they are not guaranteed fixes.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback: Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may reduce picture quality and does not fix the underlying connection.
Change one option at a time and keep a note of the result. That makes it easier to identify whether a change helped, rather than changing several variables and losing the comparison.

Test the local network and software path
- Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. If you need to test or set up Ethernet, use a suitable Ethernet cable. A wired connection can isolate Wi-Fi problems, but it cannot fix congestion elsewhere on the internet route.
- Restart the modem and router if other devices or services also have connectivity problems.
- Temporarily test without a VPN. If stability changes, investigate the VPN path before deciding whether to use it while streaming.
- Check security and prioritization software. Security software can interfere with OBS connections. If a temporary test identifies it, add an OBS exception and re-enable the protection. Check manufacturer or bundled network-prioritization tools that may deprioritize OBS.
- Update network drivers from the computer or motherboard manufacturer.
- Consider hardware only after diagnosis. A modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender can be involved. OBS recommends contacting the ISP if you are unsure whether hardware is faulty rather than replacing parts speculatively.
Check YouTube encoder compatibility and run a proper test
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Match settings to the codec and workflow you have selected; an encoder mismatch is not, by itself, proof of a network fault.
Test before the broadcast using audio and motion similar to the real stream, then watch OBS’s network indicators and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. YouTube’s guidance says 4K/2160 streams do not have the low-latency improvement option and use normal latency.

When to contact your ISP
If a sensible bitrate, the OBS checks, a wired test, and software isolation do not resolve intermittent disconnections, give your ISP useful evidence rather than only reporting that YouTube drops. OBS notes that ISP changes and unexpected route congestion can cause problems beyond the user’s control.
- Dates and exact times of disconnections, including time zone.
- OBS logs and whether the network-dropped-frame counter rose before the disconnect.
- Upload-test results and the bitrate you were using.
- Whether the computer was on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and whether an alternate connection changed the outcome.
- YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages.
The official troubleshooting guidance does not identify a responsible Indian ISP, region, or route, and it does not establish a special India-specific OBS network setting. Avoid concluding that a provider or a nationwide fault is responsible based on one stream; timestamps and repeatable comparisons help narrow down whether the issue follows the local network or connection route.
