How Much CPU and RAM Does FFmpeg Need for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no official, universal CPU or RAM minimum for running an FFmpeg stream to YouTube 24/7. The demand depends on the exact source, output settings, encoder, preset, filters, hardware acceleration and number of streams. The practical minimum is a system that can run your complete production command at real-time speed, with enough measured headroom to keep operating reliably.

Why there is no single CPU or RAM number

YouTube’s live-stream guidance specifies what your encoder should send to YouTube; it does not specify the computer resources needed to send it. FFmpeg’s documentation likewise does not provide a guaranteed core count, CPU model or RAM amount for this workload.

A stream that copies compatible audio and video without re-encoding can demand far less CPU than software encoding. Scaling, frame-rate conversion, denoising and other filters can add substantial work. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU load, but only when the hardware, driver and FFmpeg build support the chosen path and filters.

  • CPU: depends on the encoder and preset, resolution, frame rate, filters and concurrent work.
  • RAM: no minimum for one FFmpeg live stream is established in the official documentation reviewed. Measure the actual process and host.
  • 24/7 runtime: duration alone does not determine a fixed memory requirement. Input availability, network stability, process supervision and reconnect behavior also affect reliability.

Use real-time speed as the functional floor

Google’s live VP9 encoding guidance says live encoding is constrained to a minimum real-time speed of 1x. That is a useful criterion for whether a live encode can keep up with incoming video, but it is VP9-specific guidance—not a CPU benchmark for every codec or FFmpeg workflow. If FFmpeg’s reported speed falls below 1x under the intended workload, it cannot continuously process that workload in real time.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Passing 1x in a short, easy scene is not enough to establish 24/7 suitability. Test representative content, complex scenes, loop transitions, scheduled source changes and peak filter load. Leave qualitative headroom for other processes and load spikes; the sources do not establish a universal percentage.

Fix the workload before sizing the machine

Write down the exact production pipeline before comparing computers. A bare CPU-model comparison is misleading if the encoder, filters or output settings differ.

Check YouTube’s ingest settings separately from CPU sizing

Current YouTube Help guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, testing before going live and monitoring stream health while broadcasting. These are sending and network requirements, not a specification for CPU or RAM.

The following H.264 examples are YouTube’s current published ingest guidance; the page does not state a publication year. Recommended bitrate is a network/upload target, not a direct CPU requirement.

H.264 output YouTube minimum ingest bitrate YouTube recommended ingest bitrate
720p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p (4K), 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

Bitrate recommendations differ by codec: for 1080p30, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 versus 14 Mbps for H.264; for 1080p60, the recommendations are 12 Mbps versus 17 Mbps. Check YouTube’s current table for your exact codec, resolution and frame rate before configuring the stream.

Benchmark the actual FFmpeg pipeline

  1. Build the production command. Use the same input type, encoder, preset, filters, output codec and stream settings you plan to use. Include the real loop or source-change behavior rather than testing only a simple scene.
  2. Run a representative test. Observe FFmpeg’s speed throughout demanding content and confirm it stays at or above 1x. Review logs for errors, dropped frames and reconnects.
  3. Monitor the host independently. Use operating-system tools to watch CPU and memory during an extended run. FFmpeg’s -benchmark option reports real, user and system time at the end of an encode; maximum-memory reporting is not available on every system, so do not rely on it as the only live memory monitor.
  4. Validate the YouTube stream. Follow the current ingest profile for the selected codec and output, test before depending on the stream, and monitor YouTube stream health. Check that upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate.
  5. Repeat after changes. If you change resolution, frame rate, preset, filters, encoder path or concurrent outputs, benchmark again. A result from one configuration does not certify another.

When hardware encoding may help

If software encoding cannot sustain real time, possible remedies include reducing resolution, frame rate or encoding complexity, or using a compatible hardware encoder. Verify visual quality and filter support for the actual device and FFmpeg build. Acceleration is not automatic: FFmpeg’s documented QSV accelerated transcoding path requires both decoder and encoder support for QSV, and its documentation notes that this path avoids copying frames into system memory. That does not establish that any particular computer can meet your target.

Troubleshooting a stream that cannot keep up

  • FFmpeg speed falls below 1x: the pipeline is too demanding for sustained real-time work. Reduce computational load or test a compatible encoder path, then benchmark the full command again.
  • CPU remains heavily loaded: check whether software encoding, scaling or filters are the main cost. Compare only after holding the source and output settings constant.
  • Memory use rises during a long run: monitor the FFmpeg process and the host over time; the official sources give no fixed RAM allowance. Check logs and test loop transitions or scheduled input changes that occur in production.
  • YouTube reports stream-health problems despite adequate CPU: investigate upload stability, selected bitrate, codec settings and keyframe interval. Ingest bitrate is a network requirement distinct from compute capacity.
  • Hardware acceleration fails or does not reduce work: verify device, driver and FFmpeg-build support, plus compatibility of both decoding and encoding paths and the applied filters.
  • The stream stops after an input or connection interruption: inspect FFmpeg logs and verify your supervision and reconnect behavior. A 24/7 target requires recovery planning as well as enough compute.
