You can update a live stream’s thumbnail in YouTube Studio without changing the video feed from your encoder. Open the stream’s details or edit controls, upload the replacement image, save, and then check the public watch page. The exact controls available for a stream that is already live may vary, and YouTube says thumbnail changes can take time to appear.
Change the thumbnail in YouTube Studio
This is a metadata edit in Studio; you do not need to change the encoder’s video feed to change the thumbnail. YouTube’s documented tools support editing live-stream settings and uploading custom thumbnails, though they do not specify a single click-by-click route for every already-live stream.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio. The channel must be verified to use custom thumbnails.
- Open the stream. Select Go Live to open Live Control Room, then look for the stream under Manage. Alternatively, in Studio, open Content → Live and locate it there.
- Open its details or edit controls. The precise label and route can vary with the interface and stream state.
- Replace the thumbnail. In the thumbnail controls, upload the image file you want to use and save the edit.
- Check the public watch page. Allow time for the change to propagate; the updated image may not appear immediately.
Prepare an image that meets YouTube’s requirements
YouTube Help recommends a 16:9 video thumbnail at 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are supported. Its listed upload limit depends on the device: up to 50 MB for desktop uploads and up to 2 MB for mobile uploads. Check YouTube’s current custom-thumbnail guidance before uploading, since requirements and limits can change.
- Use an image file in JPG or PNG format.
- Keep the design readable at the smaller sizes where viewers may see the thumbnail.
- Make sure the image complies with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Account status, channel history, and region can affect upload privileges and daily limits.
If the new thumbnail does not appear
- The old image is still showing: YouTube says thumbnail changes may take time to appear. Wait, then refresh or recheck the public watch page.
- You cannot find the upload control: Reopen the stream’s details or edit controls from Live Control Room’s Manage view or Studio’s Content → Live list. The exact route can vary for an in-progress stream.
- The upload is rejected: Check that the account is verified, the file is JPG or PNG, and it meets the applicable size limit and YouTube’s policies. Channel or regional restrictions may also affect access.
Keep thumbnail editing separate from stream archiving
Changing a thumbnail does not establish that an always-on stream needs to be stopped or restarted. Archiving is a separate issue: YouTube says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a copy, plan a local recording backup rather than relying on an archive for an over-12-hour broadcast.
