How to Prevent a Raspberry Pi from Overheating During a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the Pi while it is doing the actual stream, then fix the cause: keep air moving around the board, avoid an airtight enclosure, and add a compatible cooler if sustained heat causes throttling. On Raspberry Pi OS, check the SoC temperature with vcgencmd measure_temp and thermal or undervoltage flags with vcgencmd get_throttled. A fan is not automatically necessary, and cooling alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.

How hot is too hot for a Raspberry Pi?

Raspberry Pi Ltd documents an 85°C thermal-management limit for the models covered by its hardware documentation. The Arm cores are progressively throttled between 80°C and 85°C; at 85°C, both Arm and GPU frequencies are reduced to manage heat. Throttling is protective, but lower clocks can reduce performance during encoding or other sustained work. See Raspberry Pi’s thermal-management documentation.

Those numbers describe thermal management, not a universal temperature target for every model or streaming setup. Raspberry Pi says built-in throttling protects the SoC from overheating damage and that a heatsink is not necessary for that purpose. Extra cooling may still help avoid throttling and preserve performance during a demanding, continuous workload. The Raspberry Pi cooling paper, updated 2026-02-16, identifies high ambient temperatures, persistent high workloads, airtight enclosures, and overclocking as conditions where additional cooling may be useful.

Check temperature and throttling during the real stream

An idle reading cannot tell you how the board behaves after hours of encoding and streaming. Run the checks below during a representative broadcast, with the same resolution, frame rate, audio, filters, enclosure, and ambient conditions you expect to use.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Open a terminal on Raspberry Pi OS. Run vcgencmd measure_temp to read the SoC temperature.
  2. Check thermal and power flags. Run vcgencmd get_throttled. It reports current and historical status flags, including throttling and undervoltage. Consult Raspberry Pi’s configuration and temperature-monitoring guide for interpreting the status and other monitoring options.
  3. Repeat under load. Observe readings and flags during the continuous stream, not only at startup. If performance degrades, note whether the evidence points to thermal throttling, undervoltage, or something else.

A throttle flag does not automatically mean heat is the only problem. Undervoltage is also relevant, so check the power supply and power connections rather than treating every slowdown as a reason to buy a fan.

Reduce heat before adding a cooler

Improve airflow and placement

  • Do not seal the Pi in an airtight enclosure. Keep air paths open and avoid placing the board where surrounding objects block ventilation.
  • If the Pi is mounted vertically, Raspberry Pi says that orientation can slightly improve heat dissipation.
  • Check the result with the same workload after changing placement; room temperature and enclosure airflow affect the outcome.

Review the streaming workload

Resolution, frame rate, encoding path, and any filters affect system work. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264, CBR, RTMP or RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval. For H.264, its bitrate table lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30, and 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode at those settings without throttling. See YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance.

Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding performance paper, updated 2026-05-06, describes Pi 5 software-encoding profiles and a Pi 4 hardware-encoding path. It is not a benchmark of every input, filter, or software setup. Test your own complete stream rather than assuming a given profile will run cool.

Choose cooling that fits your exact Pi

Add a heatsink or fan if sustained measurements show thermal throttling or the workload needs more thermal headroom. Raspberry Pi’s general guidance says airflow over a heatsink makes cooling more efficient. Before buying, identify the exact Pi model and case: the official products below are specifically for Raspberry Pi 5, not universal accessories.

Model-compatible heatsink or fan A Raspberry Pi generation other than Pi 5, or a setup where third-party cooling best fits the enclosure. Verify the exact board and case fit; compare noise, power connection, airflow, and clearance. The cited official material does not rank third-party coolers against one another.

Raspberry Pi 5’s default fan thresholds are 50°C, 60°C, 67.5°C, and 75°C for low, medium, high, and full fan speed. The thresholds and fan speeds can be configured, and fan speed has 5°C hysteresis on the way down. These are Pi 5 fan-control settings, not recommended target temperatures for every board or stream.

Test stream health as well as temperature

A cool Pi can still lose its broadcast because of network, power, encoder, or platform problems. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with movement and audio similar to the intended stream, then monitor stream health while it runs. Its guidance covers encoder settings and ingestion health; a temperature reading alone cannot establish broadcast reliability.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely issue to check What to do
Temperature rises during the stream and throttle flags appear Sustained heat, restricted airflow, high ambient temperature, or an unusually demanding workload. Open up airflow, review workload settings, and test again. If throttling persists, add cooling compatible with the exact board and case.
Throttle status appears alongside undervoltage Power delivery may be contributing; heat is not the only possible cause. Check the power supply and connections, then recheck flags under the same load. Do not assume a fan will resolve undervoltage.
The Pi runs hot inside its case Enclosure airflow may be restricted, especially if the case is airtight or poorly ventilated. Improve ventilation or select a case and cooler compatible with the board and installed accessories.
The stream drops while temperature and throttle checks look normal The available thermal checks do not diagnose network interruptions or every encoder and YouTube issue. Check YouTube stream health, network stability, encoder output, and power separately; test with representative audio and motion.
