If your YouTube Live loop stream has no sound, first find where the audio disappears: the viewer’s player, the media file, OBS or another encoder, YouTube’s incoming stream, or the viewer’s connection. Check the stream from a second device, then follow the signal from the source to YouTube rather than changing settings at random.
Find out whether the stream or one viewer is silent
Ask another viewer on a different internet connection to listen, or open the stream on a second device and browser. Make sure the YouTube player is not muted. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide distinguishes a problem limited to one viewer’s computer or connection from a problem affecting multiple viewers, which can point to the encoder.
- Only one viewer has no sound: Check that device’s player volume, output device, browser, and connection before changing the stream setup.
- Several viewers on different connections hear silence: Check the media source and outgoing audio in your encoder, then review Live Control Room health.
Trace the audio from the loop source to YouTube
Use this order: play the media locally, inspect the encoder’s audio meter, listen to a short local recording or encoder preview, read YouTube’s stream-health status, and finally test playback on another device. A meter or preview shows only part of the chain; it does not prove YouTube is receiving the audio track you intend to send.
Check the loop source and its audio
Confirm the file or playlist actually has sound
Play the video file outside the encoder. If it is silent there too, verify that it contains an audio track and use a file with the intended sound. A loop setting repeats playback; it cannot add audio missing from the file.

If you use OBS Media Source
In the active OBS scene, select the intended Media Source and check that it points to the correct file and is playing. OBS documents a Loop option for Media Sources, but looping alone does not confirm that the source has usable audio. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
If you use OBS VLC Video
Check that the VLC Video source has the expected playlist items, that Loop Playlist is enabled if you need the playlist to repeat, and that its audio track selection is correct. OBS documents track 1 as the default. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Read the OBS audio meter, then check routing
No meter movement while the video plays
In OBS, open the Audio Mixer and watch the expected source while the loop is running. If its meter does not move, check whether the correct source is in the active scene, whether the file has an audio track, and whether the selected device is the one producing sound. If you rely on desktop audio or a microphone, open Settings → Audio and select the correct device manually if the default is wrong. OBS’s Quick Start Guide explains checking meter activity and choosing devices.
The meter moves, but viewers hear nothing
Check that the source is not muted in the mixer and that it is assigned to the audio track used for streaming. In OBS, inspect the source’s audio-track assignments in Advanced Audio Properties and the stream track selected in the relevant output settings. A source can register activity in the mixer but be excluded from the track sent to YouTube. OBS explains track assignments in its Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide.

The mixer’s monitor control is for listening through the configured monitoring device; monitoring is not proof that the sound is included in the outgoing stream. If you are troubleshooting a specific microphone or headset scene, also check that the same device has not been captured both globally under Settings → Audio and again as a scene source. OBS notes that duplicate capture can cause echo; it is a more relevant check for echo than for complete silence. See the Audio Mixer Guide and Audio Sources.
Use a test recording and YouTube’s health messages
Before replacing equipment or rebuilding a long-running loop, test with a short section that includes representative audio. Make a local recording or short test stream, listen to the recording, and check the encoder preview and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends checking encoder sound, the local archive, dashboard errors, and stream health to distinguish source or encoder faults from delivery problems. Pay attention to the exact issue displayed in Live Control Room. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation lists noAudioStream for an ingestion stream with no audio stream, although YouTube requires exactly one. It also lists unsupported audio codecs and audio-setting mismatches. Follow the correction indicated by the issue rather than assuming YouTube has muted an otherwise valid signal. Check audio format only when the signal points to a settings problem
If the encoder or YouTube health status indicates a format problem, verify the audio configuration. YouTube documents AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio and recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio at 128 kbps. These are format checks, not a general cure for a muted source or a missing track. YouTube’s current recommendations are in Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
