First find out where the picture disappears: check your encoder’s live output, YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and health indicator, then the public stream in another browser or on another device. If the encoder is already black, troubleshoot its scene or visual source. If the encoder looks right but YouTube reports missing video or an ingest error, investigate the stream being sent to YouTube. If only one viewer’s player is black, check that playback client before changing encoder settings.
Identify where the black screen starts
Use the same moment in the stream for each check so you can compare what each stage is showing.
- Encoder: Look at the live or program output in OBS or your encoder. If it is black there, start with the active scene and its visual sources.
- YouTube: Open the stream in Live Control Room and check the preview and Health Indicator. YouTube displays timestamped error messages; unresolved errors may reappear.
- Viewer playback: Open the public stream in another browser or on another device. If the encoder and YouTube preview show video but one player does not, treat it as a playback-client symptom while you investigate further; that comparison is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee.
YouTube’s Health Indicator distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow errors. Its documented health issues include no incoming video, video-ingestion starvation, unsupported formats, and configuration problems involving bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, resolution, or primary and backup streams. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages and Google’s LiveStream health-status messages.
If the encoder output is black
Fix the picture at its source before changing YouTube bitrate settings. In OBS or your encoder, check:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- The intended scene is selected and active.
- The visual source is enabled, visible, and not hidden behind another source.
- The image or video source still points to an available file or location and is producing frames.
- The 24/7 loop is still playing, rather than paused, ended, or waiting for media.
- A browser source, remote visual feed, or other external source required by your setup is still loading and reachable.
Reopen or reload a source only after confirming what it depends on; a reload will not help if the file moved or the remote feed is unavailable. The correct repair depends on how your particular stream is built—there is no universal OBS loop fix. Once the encoder output shows the intended picture, check the YouTube preview again.
If YouTube reports missing video or an ingest problem
Read the exact Live Control Room message and its timestamp, then compare it with the encoder’s output and settings. A “no video” state means YouTube is not receiving a video stream. YouTube’s videoIngestionStarved health state means it is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, which can cause viewers to buffer. Confirm the encoder is actually sending video before adjusting bitrate.

Then verify that the encoder uses a supported format for the selected YouTube stream. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. The right bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table rather than copying a number without its corresponding format.
For reference, YouTube’s current table recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. These are recommendations for those specific codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations—not a cure for a black visual source. Change one setting at a time and check whether the reported health issue clears.

YouTube also identifies unsupported formats, missing or multiple video streams, interlaced input, incorrect frame rate, keyframe interval or resolution, and mismatched primary and backup stream settings as possible issues. Match your fix to the specific error rather than changing several encoder settings at once.
If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects
Dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That points to a network problem; it does not, by itself, show that the visual source is black. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, recommends these checks:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Use a wired connection if you are on Wi-Fi and seeing instability. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. An Ethernet cable is relevant to a network symptom, not to a missing scene or media source.
- Check whether your upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, but this is not a guarantee of stable throughput; YouTube’s applicable limits and your connection’s real-world stability still matter.
- Try another streaming server if available, and check whether a VPN, security software, or network-optimization software is interfering.
- Update network drivers and reduce the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
OBS dynamic bitrate can reduce the bitrate when a connection cannot keep up, which may help avoid dropped frames. It also reduces stream quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem. If the encoder output stays visible but the connection continues dropping, keep investigating network stability rather than treating dynamic bitrate as a permanent repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the fix and monitor a continuous stream
- Confirm the encoder’s live output shows the intended moving image.
- Check that the Live Control Room preview displays video and review the Health Indicator for new or recurring messages.
- Open the public stream on another device or browser to check whether playback is working beyond the encoder and preview.
- After any further change, repeat those checks so you can tell which change helped.
YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. As practical operating guidance for a 24/7 channel, schedule periodic checks of both encoder output and YouTube health; no individual setting guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
