Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can use a spare PC to keep a YouTube livestream running by encoding a video or other source in OBS and sending it to YouTube through the Live Control Room. First confirm the channel can livestream, then test the computer and upload connection at your chosen settings. A spare PC can reduce equipment costs, but it does not make the broadcast independent of that PC, its power, or its internet connection.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
On the channel you plan to use, open YouTube Studio and choose Go Live. YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Livestreamers must be at least 16 under YouTube’s general guidance. Enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so check well before your intended launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance.
YouTube currently lists limits of 10 concurrent active streams per channel and three per stream key. These are simultaneous-stream limits, not a promise of unlimited stream creation; check the current rules if your setup needs multiple feeds.
What the spare PC needs to do
The PC runs streaming software, encodes your video and audio, and uploads the result continuously. The required processing power depends on the chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder and source. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not specify a minimum CPU or GPU for a 24/7 workload, so there is no universal hardware floor to rely on. Test the actual machine with representative content and the settings you intend to use.

- Keep the PC powered on and prevent sleep or hibernation while the broadcast is meant to run.
- Make sure the video and audio source is available to the encoder for the whole session. For a prerecorded loop, check that playback repeats as intended.
- Use a stable internet connection with upload capacity beyond the stream’s bitrate, leaving headroom for normal fluctuations and other network use.
- Plan for interruptions: a local encoder depends on the PC, power, network and streaming process remaining operational.
Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio and OBS
- Install OBS Studio on the spare PC, or use another encoder supported by YouTube. YouTube describes encoder streaming as suitable for productions such as gameplay, screen sharing and external audio/video equipment. OBS is one option; the YouTube workflow also applies to other encoder software and hardware.
- Open YouTube Studio → Go Live. In the Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling can give viewers advance notice and let them set reminders. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup workflow for the current interface.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast into the encoder’s YouTube or streaming-service settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a screenshot, share it publicly or leave it in public notes. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Choose output settings that the PC and upload connection can sustain. Start with the resolution and frame rate you actually need, then check YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that combination.
- Run a representative test. Include movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. Start the encoder, check its preview and stream health in the Live Control Room, and confirm both picture and sound before relying on the setup.
- Start the broadcast using the chosen workflow. Depending on the Live Control Room flow, you may need to confirm the preview and select the option to go live there after the encoder connects.
Choose settings that leave room for a stable stream
Bitrate is not the only constraint: the spare PC must encode continuously, and the internet connection must upload consistently. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends testing upload speed and the stream itself rather than assuming a speed-test result guarantees success. Its H.264 recommendations include these examples:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | Requires less upload bitrate than the listed 1080p options, but still needs a stable connection and a PC capable of encoding at the selected frame rate. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | A potential starting point for a spare PC that handles 30 fps reliably. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | Needs more upload capacity and may place a greater encoding load on the PC than 30 fps. |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of successful delivery. In its current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guide, YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no greater than four seconds. Use the corresponding options in your encoder where available, and check the current YouTube guidance if its settings change.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Lowering resolution or frame rate can reduce bitrate and encoding demands. Choose based on the content and what your actual connection and hardware can sustain, not simply the highest available output. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help establish basic settings, but a test at the intended operating conditions is still important.
Keep a 24/7 setup running—and plan for recovery
A spare PC is not a failover system by itself. If it restarts, loses power or internet, or the encoder stops, the broadcast can be interrupted. Before relying on the stream, check the PC’s power and sleep settings, test the source loop, and monitor both OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube does not promise uninterrupted service for a locally operated encoder.

For networking, an Ethernet cable may help when both the PC and router support it and a cable can be routed safely. It is optional, and it will not cure an inadequate internet service or network congestion. YouTube advises testing the upload bitrate; OBS explains that its connection to the streaming service is direct. Increasing dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection indicator points to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. See the OBS Help Portal.
Decide how you want to handle replays
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise the same archive behavior for broadcasts that run longer than 12 hours. If a complete replay matters, consider splitting the broadcast into shorter sessions or recording a local copy, and verify that your chosen recording setup has enough storage and is working before depending on it.

Costs and alternatives to leaving a PC on
Reusing a spare PC avoids buying a dedicated streaming machine, but the local approach still uses electricity and depends on the machine and home connection staying available. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists cloud-based services for continuous prerecorded-video streams; their current terms and capabilities should be checked directly before choosing one.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live; it does not stream from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers; the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo and its pricing page for current plan details. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
