What has to move—and what might stay on the Pi
A VPS can run FFmpeg and publish to YouTube, but it cannot automatically access files, devices, or processes that exist only on your Raspberry Pi. Before provisioning anything, identify the stream’s complete chain: input, any capture or preprocessing process, FFmpeg options, and YouTube output.
Inventory the working setup
On the Pi, record the exact command and the installed build details using ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -buildconf. Note the input and audio sources, stream mapping, output URL structure, codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, filters, and every referenced file. Keep the stream key out of screenshots, shared notes, source control, and shell history.
Do not assume that a command will work unchanged on a different architecture or FFmpeg build. Its required input devices, demuxers, encoders, filters, and protocols must be available on the VPS. FFmpeg describes its input/output processing model and RTMP protocol in its command-line documentation and protocol reference.

Decide how to handle the source
- If FFmpeg reads a local video, playlist, image sequence, overlay, or other asset from the Pi, copy it to persistent VPS storage and update the paths.
- If a camera is physically connected to the Pi, the VPS cannot directly inherit that local capture device. Keep capture at the Pi and transport its output to the VPS, or use another capture arrangement. The required transport method depends on the existing setup.
- If another process creates FFmpeg’s input—for example, a camera pipeline—migrate or replace that process too. A Pi-specific capture command should not be assumed to work on a generic VPS.
Choose and secure the VPS
Choose an operating-system image and instance based on the real workload. Copying an already encoded video is different from decoding, filtering, and re-encoding it; the latter needs enough sustained CPU capacity for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. Concurrent streams add to the workload. Without those details, a fixed instance size would be guesswork.
An India region does not by itself guarantee the best route or lowest latency to YouTube ingest. Compare candidates on their available India regions, measured route to the intended ingest endpoint, CPU performance if encoding, outbound bandwidth and egress policy, persistent storage, recovery-console access, FFmpeg compatibility, and total current cost. Provider regions, prices, and egress terms vary; verify them with each provider before committing.
Set up remote access and network policy safely
Prepare and test SSH access before changing firewall rules. On Ubuntu, allow SSH before enabling UFW, confirm the active rules, and keep the provider console or another recovery path available when editing SSH configuration. Ubuntu documents UFW firewall management and warns that an incorrect remote SSH configuration can block access; see its OpenSSH server guidance.

For a VPS that only publishes outbound to YouTube, check outbound DNS, TLS/RTMPS connectivity, and the provider’s egress policy. Do not open inbound media ports unless the architecture actually requires incoming media at the VPS.

- Install a suitable build. Use a distribution package or vetted build, then inspect its version and configuration. Confirm it includes the exact protocol, input support, codec, and filters the Pi command uses; do not assume a codec or hardware encoder is present.
- Move and verify inputs. Copy required files to durable storage, update paths, and check ownership and read permissions under the account that will run the service.
- Rebuild the command carefully. Preserve the working input/output structure, stream mapping, codec options, and container settings while updating paths and the protected key source. FFmpeg options can apply to the next input or output, so moving options around may change behavior.
- Confirm the output protocol. Preserve the known-working YouTube URL structure while testing. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported; FFmpeg’s protocol support and URL syntax depend on the installed build.
Use a protected secret file or another controlled secret-injection method for the stream key. Restrict access to it and avoid putting the key in a public command, world-readable service unit, repository, or log. The exact secure method depends on the VPS operating system and deployment setup.
Set YouTube Live encoding options
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Its live encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Choose the codec and bitrate for the ingest settings you actually use, rather than copying settings meant for another codec or resolution. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate recommendations are:

These are YouTube Help recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or a substitute for checking stable VPS upload capacity. YouTube lists separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265 on the same settings page; use the row that matches the actual codec and resolution. The right bitrate also depends on motion and available upstream capacity.
Test with audio and motion representative of the planned stream, then monitor stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. A static test image or silent clip will not reveal every problem in a moving, audio-bearing program.

Run FFmpeg under systemd
Starting FFmpeg in an SSH session is not enough for a long-running stream: disconnecting the session can end the process. On a systemd-based Linux VPS, use a service unit with absolute executable and media paths, a controlled working directory, and a dedicated unprivileged account where practical. Store secrets with restricted permissions rather than exposing the stream key in a broadly readable unit file.
For a long-running service, Ubuntu’s systemd.service documentation recommends Restart=on-failure. A short restart delay can prevent an immediate tight retry loop. Systemd start-rate limits can eventually stop repeated failures, so a restart policy is not a substitute for checking the service state and logs.
A service manager can restart a failed FFmpeg process; it cannot fix a wrong key, missing input file, full disk, blocked egress, unsupported codec, or rejected ingest. Diagnose the underlying error instead of assuming every restart will recover the stream.

Test the VPS stream, cut over, and keep a rollback path
- Test before switching. If appropriate for the channel, use a private or otherwise non-public event. Verify the intended input and audio, the stream key’s permissions, readable logs, and a healthy ingest in Live Control Room.
- Test service recovery. Confirm the service starts after a VPS reboot and that you can inspect its state and logs. Check disk space and outbound connectivity as part of the test.
- Cut over deliberately. Stop the Pi publisher, start the VPS service, then verify ingest and program output. Avoid sending from both endpoints with the same key simultaneously unless your YouTube workflow explicitly supports it; overlapping publishers can interrupt or replace the active feed.
- Retain the old setup until the new one proves stable. Keep the Pi configuration intact but stopped where possible. If rollback is needed, restore the Pi command and its input path. The right rollback differs if the Pi captures a physical camera rather than reading files.
Troubleshoot common migration failures
