YouTube Live accepts streams at up to 60 frames per second (fps). To send 60 fps, your source and encoder must produce it, and you should choose a bitrate suited to the stream’s resolution and codec. YouTube then transcodes the incoming stream into multiple formats for viewers, so the settings you send do not guarantee that every viewer will receive 60 fps.
What 60 fps support means for a YouTube live stream
YouTube’s live encoder settings allow a frame rate of up to 60 fps. You can use an encoder—software or standalone hardware—to send gameplay, screen sharing, or a production using external audio and video equipment. YouTube does not require a particular encoder product.
The stream’s frame rate depends on what your source and encoder actually output. Selecting 60 fps in an encoder cannot create genuine 60 fps motion from a source that only provides a lower frame rate. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default; creators can use a custom stream key and manual resolution settings to select resolution themselves.
Recommended bitrate for 60 fps by resolution
YouTube publishes minimum and recommended ingestion bitrates by resolution and codec. These are encoder bitrate settings, not a promise about upload speed or the quality every viewer will receive. YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats suited to viewers’ devices and network conditions.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Resolution at 60 fps | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For example, YouTube’s 1080p60 guidance sets H.264’s minimum at 6 Mbps and recommends 17 Mbps. For AV1 or H.265, it lists a 4 Mbps minimum and recommends 12 Mbps. Use the recommended figure as a planning target when your connection can sustain it; a minimum is not equivalent to the recommended setting.
Encoder settings to check
- Ingestion protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS.
- Video codec: YouTube’s general live settings list H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Confirm that your encoder workflow and account setup support the codec you intend to send.
- Bitrate: Set a constant bitrate and use the table above to match resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: These are detected automatically by default. A custom stream key and manual resolution settings allow you to select resolution manually.
- Color: For standard dynamic range, YouTube’s advanced settings specify Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. HDR has additional codec and ingestion requirements; ordinary 60 fps support alone does not establish that an HDR setup is compatible.
See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current protocol, codec, frame-rate, and advanced-setting guidance.

Make sure your connection can sustain the stream
The bitrate is the data your encoder sends to YouTube. Your available upload bandwidth must handle the total stream bitrate consistently, with room for ordinary variation. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Shared networks can reduce the capacity available to your stream, so a speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained performance.
- Run an upload speed test on the connection you plan to stream from.
- Choose a resolution, codec, and bitrate that fit within your stable upload capacity, leaving the recommended headroom.
- Test with representative gameplay or other movement, plus audio similar to the real stream.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and adjust the bitrate or connection if warnings appear.

Common 60 fps streaming problems
The stream is not actually reaching 60 fps
Check the source frame rate and the encoder’s output setting. YouTube detects incoming settings automatically by default, so verify what the encoder is sending rather than assuming a selected value guarantees the delivered frame rate.
Stream health reports instability or dropped frames
The outgoing bitrate may be too high for the connection’s sustained upload capacity, or the connection may be varying. Reduce the bitrate or resolution, avoid competing traffic on a shared connection where possible, and test again while monitoring stream health.

The image looks poor despite a 60 fps setting
Frame rate and image detail are separate considerations. Check whether the encoder bitrate meets YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen resolution and codec; a setting below the recommendation may leave less data for complex or fast-moving gameplay.
A viewer does not see 60 fps
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple output formats. The encoder’s 60 fps input setting therefore does not guarantee that every viewer’s device or connection will receive the same resolution and frame rate.
