The October 2 report says Edey, who is recovering from an ankle issue, remains on track for Opening Night. It also says the Grizzlies continued evaluating him during training camp. The status description was reported by CBS Sports and attributed to Drew Hill of The Daily Memphian; it is not a direct statement from Edey, general manager Zach Kleiman, or a team medical official. A September 28 report said Kleiman had cleared Edey for on-court activity and that he was on pace for Memphis’s regular-season opener against the Utah Jazz on October 21. - Reported: Edey was cleared for on-court activity by September 28, and the October 2 update described him as on track for Opening Night.
- Not confirmed: The reports do not establish that he has returned to unrestricted practice or will be active against Utah.

For a definitive active or inactive decision, rely on the Grizzlies’ current availability report closer to tipoff; the reports cited here do not settle that question.

Why is Edey recovering?
NBA.com’s dated news entries say Edey underwent a procedure in March 2026 to address discomfort and bone stress in his left ankle, ending his 2025–26 season. A separate March 25 entry reports a procedure for lingering discomfort in his left elbow. CBS Sports’ September 28 recap also describes surgeries on both the ankle and elbow. These reported procedures provide context for the current update, but the October 2 item concerns his ankle and does not provide a detailed medical assessment of either recovery.
What did Edey contribute before his season ended?
In 11 regular-season appearances in 2025–26, Edey averaged 13.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 1.1 assists and 0.6 steals in 25.8 minutes per game, according to CBS Sports’ player-news page.
