You can run a YouTube livestream from a Mac by connecting an encoder to a stream you create in YouTube Studio. But a Mac-based setup depends on the encoder, power, network connection and local storage staying available; YouTube’s setup guidance does not certify a particular Mac or promise an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. Plan for outages and recording limits before you leave a stream unattended.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- An encoder that is compatible with your Mac and configured for YouTube. YouTube describes both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, but does not rank them for reliability on a Mac. OBS is one software option; check its current macOS information through the OBS Help Portal.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream settings, plus power and storage for any local recording you want to keep.
- Video and audio you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for rights, including music licensing, on the content provider.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-streaming setup flow for your channel. If this is your first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation rather than scheduling a last-minute launch. Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s verification and restriction requirements.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube provides a watch page, a stream URL and a stream key. The exact Studio layout may change, so follow the current prompts in the encoder setup guide.
- Protect the stream key. Enter the URL and key only in the encoder you intend to use. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it on screen. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Connect your source and configure the encoder. Select the intended camera, microphone, media source or other production inputs. These are production choices, not universal requirements. Check that the encoder supports your Mac and that the chosen video and audio devices work before you begin.
Choose settings your Mac and connection can sustain
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 as video codec options, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use settings supported by your encoder and source; a more demanding resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if your upload connection cannot sustain it. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for supported combinations and recommendations.
| Setting | Practical starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS | Use the connection method offered by YouTube and supported by your encoder. |
| Video codec | H.264 is a common compatibility choice; YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1. | Confirm the encoder supports the selected codec and YouTube’s current guidance. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set the bitrate and verify it remains steady during a representative test. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Set this in the encoder if the control is available. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264. | This is a platform recommendation, not a promise your Mac or network can sustain it. Test upload capacity and stream health before relying on it. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 | Check that the intended input is selected and that audio is audible without clipping or interruptions. |
YouTube transcodes incoming streams into other output formats for viewers. That does not remove the need to send a stable feed: run a speed test, then test the actual Mac, encoder, source and network together at the settings you plan to use. If the stream health indicator shows problems, reduce the demand on the connection or choose settings your setup can hold consistently.
Start the encoder and verify the broadcast
- Open the encoder, select the prepared scene or source, and enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key.
- Start streaming from the encoder. In YouTube Studio, confirm that the incoming feed appears and check stream health before relying on the watch page.
- Do a preflight run with representative motion and audio. Watch for dropped frames, unstable bitrate, missing sound, incorrect framing and source changes that could interrupt the broadcast.
- Monitor the actual YouTube watch page from another device if practical. Confirm viewers can see and hear what you expect, rather than assuming a successful encoder connection means the presentation is correct.
For a Mac to keep streaming unattended, it must remain powered, online and able to run the encoder and source continuously. Test what happens when the network disconnects, the Mac sleeps or restarts, the encoder closes, or the source ends. Do not assume automatic recovery: behavior depends on the selected software or hardware and should be tested in your own setup.

Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
A 24/7 livestream is not a dependable way to create one complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, keep a local recording backup and test that it is actually being saved. An external drive is one possible storage location, but YouTube does not require a particular drive or specify a capacity. YouTube’s archive guidance covers the capture limitation.
If you need archiveable segments, plan a restart or shorter-session schedule around the under-12-hour guidance, and test how the encoder, YouTube watch page and local recording behave at each transition. A restart strategy is not a guarantee of a seamless broadcast or a complete archive. Check available storage, recording file sizes and recovery steps before leaving the system unattended.

Copyright and monetization still apply to a 24/7 stream
You are responsible for clearing rights to everything broadcast, including music. Do not assume that owning a recording, having a subscription to a music service, or crediting an artist grants livestream rights. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and obtain any permissions needed for the material you use.
Being live continuously does not guarantee monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live content and expect original, authentic material; repetitive or mass-produced streams can be ineligible. The policy page says its clarification and renaming of “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” took effect July 15, 2025, and describes such content as already ineligible under originality requirements. Review the policy for your channel and format rather than treating uptime as a route to earnings.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm live streaming has been enabled, use the current stream URL and key from the intended Studio stream, and make sure the key was not mistyped or exposed. Replace a compromised key and update the encoder.
- Stream health is poor or the feed drops: Run an upload test, check the Mac’s network connection and reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate until the setup can sustain the feed. Re-test with representative content; the 10 Mbps 1080p30 recommendation is not a guarantee for a particular connection.
- Video works but audio is missing or wrong: Check the selected audio device and encoder input, then test monitoring and playback before restarting the broadcast.
- The stream ends when the Mac sleeps or loses power: Check the Mac’s power and sleep behavior and test recovery after a deliberate interruption. Do not leave the setup unattended until you know how it behaves after a disconnect or restart.
- The YouTube archive is incomplete or absent: Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep and verify a local recording, and use tested shorter sessions if you need archiveable segments.
- Local recording stops or fills storage: Confirm the recording destination, available capacity and file creation during a test. If necessary, choose a storage plan and segment schedule that fit the expected recording size.
