Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Estimate your Raspberry Pi stream’s monthly upload by multiplying its total outgoing bitrate in Mbps by the number of hours streamed, then by 0.45. At a constant 4 Mbps, that is about 1.8 decimal GB per hour, or 1,296 GB over an uninterrupted 30-day month, before overhead. These are calculated examples, not measurements of a particular Pi or internet plan.
Calculate monthly upload from bitrate and runtime
Use this formula for decimal gigabytes, where 1 GB equals 1,000,000,000 bytes:
Monthly GB = total bitrate in Mbps × hours streamed × 0.45
The factor 0.45 converts a megabit-per-second stream running for an hour into decimal gigabytes. For a calculation in kilobits per second:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Decimal GB = total bitrate in kbps × stream seconds ÷ 8,000,000
Use your actual schedule rather than assuming every month means 24/7 streaming. For example, a 4 Mbps total stream running 6 hours per day for 30 days uses about 324 decimal GB: 4 × 6 × 30 × 0.45.

Example estimates
| Total bitrate | Approximate use per hour | Approximate use in 30 days at 24/7 |
|---|---|---|
| 4 Mbps | 1.8 decimal GB | 1,296 decimal GB |
| 8 Mbps | 3.6 decimal GB | 2,592 decimal GB |
These are arithmetic estimates before overhead, not measured Raspberry Pi consumption statistics. A provider may use different units or round its displayed usage.
Find the right bitrate for your FFmpeg stream
For the calculation, use the bitrate FFmpeg actually sends if you know it, or a representative measurement from your setup. If FFmpeg specifies separate video and audio bitrates, add them to get the total. If a network monitor already reports total outgoing traffic, do not add the audio bitrate again.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance provides recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, it lists 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are platform configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that your particular stream will average those rates. YouTube recommends selecting a quality your connection can reliably handle and testing the connection.
The same live guidance recommends CBR, lists RTMP/RTMPS as protocols, recommends 128 kbps stereo audio, and calls for a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). Count audio alongside video when starting from separate FFmpeg settings. Do not use YouTube’s video upload encoding recommendations as live-ingest bitrates; that page covers uploaded videos, not a live stream’s data use.

Check the estimate against your India internet plan
The arithmetic is the same in India as anywhere else. Whether the result fits depends on your provider, plan, location, fair-use terms, and how the provider counts data. There is no single monthly allowance that applies to all Indian connections. Compare your estimate with the allowance and terms shown in your own account or plan documents.
This formula estimates encoded stream payload, not the provider’s billing meter. Other Pi traffic, such as updates or other services sharing the connection, is not included. Reconnects, retries, variable traffic, protocol overhead, and provider accounting can also make observed use differ. The available guidance does not establish one universal overhead percentage, so treat any extra margin you choose as your own planning allowance, not a fixed technical constant.

Test the actual setup before relying on a monthly estimate
- Set up the intended stream. Use the Pi, FFmpeg settings, resolution, frame rate, audio, and connection you plan to run.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the intended stream; a static or silent test may not reflect the real configuration.
- Check the bitrate and stream health. Use FFmpeg’s configured or observed total outgoing bitrate when available, and monitor YouTube’s stream health messages. YouTube’s live guidance notes conditions such as low bitrate, and its Live Streaming API documents video ingestion starvation as a health condition.
- Recalculate for your schedule. Multiply total Mbps by the hours you expect to stream in the month and by 0.45, then compare with your plan’s data terms.
YouTube’s encoder guidance specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. The Pi model does not change the bitrate-to-data arithmetic; it matters only insofar as it can produce the stream you configure. The available evidence does not establish that a particular Raspberry Pi model is suitable for every setup. A single Pi Zero W example is anecdotal, not a general model recommendation.
